View Full Version : My newphew is a complete n00b.

My nephew Alex has pretty much everything going for him. He's in a good home, gets good grades, has lots of friends and his parents don't spoil him too much.

Unfortunately, he was born with the n00b gene.

Before Christmas, I had learned that he had gotten a PS2. Therefore, Mom and I decide to buy him Final Fantasy X-2. We figured this would keep him busy for a while. Let's point out here that Alex is 12.

There wasn't enough place at the table for everyone, so the oldies ate first, followed by the youngsters. While Alex was eating, I went downstairs to the PS2, popped the CD into the machine and started playing a piece of the game. After a while, Alex comes down, so I reset the machine and let him play.

After 2 minutes, he says "[KodiaX987], what do I need to do?"

I turn around and find out he had just gotten his first mission and had been left to go and accomplish it.

"Did you read your mission orders?" I ask.

"What mission orders?"

"...You skipped the dialogues, haven't you..."

"Yeah. It's boring."

"Restart the game."

"What?"

"I said: restart the game, and this time, read the dialogue. Your mission orders were there, you just had to read 'em."

Flash forward a few months later. I'm at Alex's place, he's just rented Turok Evolution. He asks me to start playing if I want, and what does he do in the meantime?

He goes on the Internet to look for cheat codes.

That's right, he hasn't even played the fucking game yet and he already tries to cheat on it.

Flash forward a few months later, yesterday, actually. He comes home because his dad had to bring me a Windows XP machine to do some operations on an infamous hard drive of mine. I had burned a few Dreamcast games for Alex so I asked him how they were.

"They're good." He said. "But Industrial Spy, I have absolutely no idea what to do. I can't even move!"

For your information, Industrial Spy isn't even a game where "you" move, it's a game where you issue orders to agents.

So I said: "Did you say 'yes' when the chick told you if you wanted further assistance on your first mission?"

"...What?"

"She said that. It was her third line actually. She asks you if you want further help and then the tutorial begins."

At that point, I should've told him I had written about the chick asking that question on the jewel case cover but it seems Alex hadn't read the box at all.

"Know what? Restart the game, say YES when the chick asks you and go from there. By the way, the castle mission is gonna fuck you over. That's all I have to say."

The castle mission in this game operates on a set of doors and traps, connected to 24 switches scattered throughout the level. I don't expect Alex to ever finish it.

"By the way, are there any cheat codes for Rez?" He asks.

"No. You need to work for all the unlockable yourself, like a man."

Next up, I start working on the hard drive. The machine my half-brother had brought belonged to Alex.

I turn it on, it crashes on startup. I need to reboot it once and then it works properly.

I plug it to the network, and start transferring files. Quickly, I realize his computer is fucked up in the worst ways: it is slow as hell, randomly freezes, and I get porn ads over porn ads.

So I turn to Alex and say "You need to format that box."

"How do I restart it?"

Note that Alex can't get himself to say "format". For him "restarting" in his mind is "formatting" in mine, don't ask why.

Then my half-brother tells me: "I told him I wouldn't fix his machine anymore, that if he fucked it up, it would be his problem and he'd have to fix it himself."

So I say to Alex: "You NEED to format your computer."

"But how?!"

"Go look on the Internet or instruction manuals, ask your dad, whatever, this is your mission. I am not giving you any further information. You go and figure out how to fix a box yourself."

"But I don't know how to restart [format] my computer!!"

"Go seek the answers. Make a man out of yourself."

"But how do I do it?! I don't know!!"

It was time to leave, so he was forced to hop into the minivan. I still have his box since my transfers aren't finished. But when I give it back, I know he'll never get to formatting anyways.

So to summarize, Alex:

-Looks for cheat codes before even playing the game.
-Cannot fix his own computer.
-Is unable to acknowledge the idea of reading the instructions, the manual, or seeking help files over the Internet.
-Always skips the dialogue, whether it's important or not, and then wonders why he's all lost.
-Is able to fuck up a computer so often that people around him have resigned to helping him out, knowing he'll just fuck up again in a matter of days.
-Click on EVERYTHING. He clicks on all the ads, installs all software whether he asked for them or not, and always gets fooled by the fake Windows message ads.

I told him if he ever came to #psow, I'd be able to fool him into deleting the entire contents of his hard drive. I'm waiting just for that, so that he can finally learn that he's gonna have to learn how to figure out stuff by himself.

I fear for your future children, as you may possibly carry that gene within you.

And no offense, I want to slap your nephew with a 4x4. He's also entitled to one of these too:

hmm... if I may interject... your nephew may be a noob but you also must consider that hes 12 years old, a noob to life. in time, and with the right guidance, he'll grow to be more knowledgeable about this stuff.

Funny, reminds me entirely of my 14 year old nephew.

Always hops on to get cheat codes for games, doesn't even play it for the gameplay, just any code that lets him "own" the game without having to do anything.

After I bought and put together my new system, I put my old comp downstairs and had it routed to my cable so my brother could use it since he's still off work from his injury. Setup an account for my mom, my brother and reluctantly my nephew on WinXP.

Within two weeks of my nephew using it, there were all kinds of pop-up ads(you can't open IE without six or seven ads popping up immediately, and if you're lucky IE won't crash instantly). Also uncountable useless programs, such as "search bars", "weather" programs, you know, shit any idiot would'nt even need if they knew where to look for what they needed.(Since when does my nephew need to know the weather?)

And he can't figure out basic premises to games, always asks me "Why'd they do that?", "Why'd that happen?", etc. Heh, used to be he'd nag my mom to get me to actually beat a level or a boss for him, and I'd actually get reamed a new asshole if I did'nt, supposedly I was "just being ignorant" by not doing it. Thankfully that was years ago though, he knows better than to ask me to do anything for him anymore(wasting all of his lives and continues might have been the reason?)

He even has his own comp, and rightfully so, it's as fucked as my old one after he's been on it.

Meh, ah well. Simpletons!

It's a proven fact.

Kids suck!

.. kodi style

On the other hand, why the hell are you guys running windowsXP ?

Oh, and FYI, the weatherbug comes built in when you install the newest version of AIM (5.5)
Winamp, icq, aim, and gator junk come with aol 9.0

Oh, and just for the hell of it, just leave his computer alone. If he's smart enough to search the internet for cheat codes, he's smart enough to use the same search engine to look for "format c:"

Oh the brighter side of things, I love being an only child, and the nearest relative (beside parents) are halfway around the globe in hong kong. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

We weren't. I have a compy on WinME, one on Win98, and my mom uses Win98 as well. Problem was, my own Win98 had screwed up while installing Win2000. Since Win2000 uses the NTFS file system instead of FAT32, we needed a NTFS computer to access the hard drive and salvage my stuff. My half-bro runs Windows XP, so he brought one of his machines to my home so that I could work on my hard drive and fix0r it.

He had AIM installed, but that doesn't exactly explain the three different search bars that were on the comp, as well as various other odds and ends.

We use it mainly because it works and is far more stable than 98 or ME.
Also, I use AIM 5.5 and I don't have any weatherbug program on my pc, but then again, I do run both a spyware blocker AND a popup blocker. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Just give him a version of GTA.
We all know that it fits his type of game:

Storyline, though easily ignored, and handful of bloody violence. With cheatcodes too.

Then you can sit there and keep him busy on end too. Plus, he can command a virtual person to have sex instead of just seeing it happen with popup windows on the PC!

As much as I loathe to say it, Firo, XP is the most stable and least obnoxious version of Windows I've yet used, and I've used 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98SE, 2k, ME and XP. 2k is the runner up, but XP once you switch it to look like 9x is actually a fairly decent, stable operating system. Calus here has had to be rebooted exactly 3 times in the last year. >_>; So... What the fuck are YOU using, and why? >_>;

I also finally have a mostly working installation of Linux on the spare crappy computer. Debian's a bit harder to install than Red Hat(This does not surprise me), but it also likes my computer better. Last time I tried to install Red Hat on it the computer just kind of shut itself off in the middle of installing packages. O_o; I say 'mostly' working, because I was doing the installation out of boredom and thus did not anally sit down, figure out what sort of drivers I should try to be using for the shitty integrated video card Compaq used and try to poke around HP's website for the specs on my monitor to get X working. It'll start, but the server almost immediately crashes. >_>; Better'n Red Hat, my monitor always turned itself off if I tried to do that. >_>;

Back on topic, damn you people have computer-idiots for relatives. I mean, I don't claim to be a genius at computers, but at least I'm not a fucking retard. I know how to install an OS, I know how to format a drive, I know how to do things in DOS, I know how to do things in Linux, I know how to install and remove hardware, I don't load my computer down with shitty adware and spyware... Yeah. I can't tell you the latest hardware specs or how to overclock your PC, but I can tell you how to slave a second hard drive to your first one. I even know how to make an ethernet cable. I've never built a computer from parts before, but I know the general layout of how one is put together, and more importantly, I KNOW HOW TO LOOK UP THE STUFF I DON'T KNOW. >_>;

As opposed to the wretched combination of my dad and half-sister, who have together managed to load his crappy e-machines with so much adware and spyware that you get IE popups even when he's not online with his crappy dialup AOL. >_>; I ran AdAware and SpyBot last time I was there. Holy SHIT was that fucker loaded. And it's STILL not all gone. T_T *shudder* At least I managed to convert dad to Mozilla. >_>; At least we were still on dialup MSN here last time I was there, so I smartly looked up MSN access numbers before I went, set up a dialup connection, and had the pleasure of cleaning out a good chunk of the spyware and using Mozilla while not having to deal with AOL. >_>;;; But jesus that thing is loaded.

I've fortunately managed to teach my mom stuff. I also have her as a limited user so she can't do anything intentionally. >_>; ...Especially since she refuses to set a password on her accout. -_-

Gah, I hate the computer illiterate.

I think everyone has had experiances with idiot siblings/relatives.

Like my 15 year old sister. I let her borrow my old PC after i got my new machine so she could surf the net, play 'The Sims' and stop cluttering up my Dads PC. Then i leave for University.

Come back a year later and decide to have a look at my old machine...and wonder why the fuck she has porn networks shortcutted to her desktop! The machine lags like hell and when i decided to check what she was actually running i was finding dodgy programs that were not only running themselves once, but twice. She had been downloading everything that had popped up and it was killing the machine. Whne i finally got Ad Aware running there was at least 200 pieces of spyware on there and 3 password stealing programs. I deliver the 'Your a moron' speach to her and set about trying to find the Reboot disks as i really cant be arsed to sort out that mess again.

Doesnt help that the machine is still running Windows ME *spits*.

My nephew is every bit as bad. If there is an invulnerability cheat he will use it. Unlimited ammo? yep, he will have it. Walk-thoughs? He's used them all.
Playing deathmatch with him, he sets the bots up to be weaker than we are - like no armour, useless weapons etc and then wonders why I lose interest after 2 minutes.
Playing co-op mode on Halo, if he takes any kind of damage he will suicide to get his hitpoints back, while I'm doing my best to stay alive on minimum HP despite the odds.
Then we put Command and Conquer on his PSone; only thing is, he doesn't know what the mission objectives are, because he didn't bother to read them. Seems like kids are the same all over the world!!

o_O;;

It's not really the OS itself that I hate (XP) It's more or less the fact that every time something gets slightly unstable, the thingy says (Not Responding) on the bar, then tries to crash the program. It's really annoying when it tries to crash most of my programs like that. I don't mind if it kills IE while I'm using it, but it kills aol first. Hell, most of the time, programs work, but the popup gets annoying.
"This program is not responding, blablabla [End Now] [Cancel]"
Full screen games are usually minimized just to tell me itunes or aol suddenlt "stopped responding" when my music is still playing, or I'm still online. psobb can't be minimized, so it usually closes right there. And in gunbound, i usually skip my turn.

That, and XP hate dos games ;_;

My vaio runs XP by default.

My friend and his brother both have the n00b gene.

Example
They got Jedi Knight for pc. Went home first went online got the god, walk through walls and all weopons cheat. Ran through the whole game in under 4 hrs by basically walking through the walls avioding any dangerous puzzles, skipping dialoge and using 1hit ko cheats on hard bosses. Afetr finishing the games 1 player mode they put it on the shelf in their computer room next to the tens of others games they have done the same for in the past.

What I don't get is
1, If your going to cheat at least do it to learn the games story
2, Why did you spend £30 for a game you played through on the day you got it never to play it again.
3, Why not take the game back the next day at least and get your money back

God dam n00bs

Honestly, I don't think everyone at that age is a noob..
to say, "you were a noob too at one point", is generalizing that kids are complete idiots..

Take kids like I used to be, i'd play a game, without walkthroughs, pro action replay, gameshark etc etc and beat it. That includes confusing as all hell games like Shadowrun for SNES.

Another example.
I lived in ohio, dayton to be exact. One of my friends little brothers -- Hardcore RPG freak, played every game there was for the 3 systems that were out at the time (SNES, N64, saturn I think) and would know every single detail about the game/games he played... down to storylines tha weren't even directly in the game, but were simply parts of the story that involved the game. Sort of like how we all like to figure out the details on the REd weapons in PSO, or the master rifle makers and people like donolph baz and his family... which have no direct impact on the storyline because they aren't vital to PSo I-II, some might disagree, but figuring out these things are what this kid did.. at 9 years old.

Not all kids are noobs.. just ignorant spoiled ones that have no time for learning, just things being given to them (cheats, unlimited ammo, no reading, walkthrough walls etc etc etc).

Funny story btw,, the original poster of this thread..

Very well narrated.

This just reminds me that I'm never letting my mom use my computer ever again.

She hasn't done anything all that bad yet, but she's just so dense sometimes.

I keep telling her to log out when she checks her mail, and she has not done it ONCE.

I tell her not to change my settings in any browsers or programs. She does it almost EVERY TIME SHE USES MY COMPUTER.

Several times, while I was in AIM and went to use the bathroom, I come back to find my mom using my computer despite the fact I had several windows (AIM and others) open and running.

My personal favorite, though... she moves my buddy list over when looking for the IE icon. Lord only knows why she would think it's all the way over there, especially when it's in the same place everytime. I just don't understand it.

But yeah, this is all just tiny stuff. I gotta say, though... reading about your nephew made me angry and absolutely speechless, Kodi. I mean... like Ness said:

So yeah, my nephew will want to come over and play games, which is fine. He gets to play lots of racing games (I don't have any Mario like games, lol) and depending how his parents are, won't be able to even play most of my games anyway (I don't buy games rated E very much and the ones I do have are sports games). here are some tips on how to not make your computer (running xp) not freeze.

Do not:
1: run winamp, aol, 5 instances of IE, explorer, and a game at the same time.
2: check CTRL-SHFT-ESC, goto processes, make sure QTtask is not running, this goes for any other process that doesn't look normal.. what does look normal? see--->
3:
taskmgr
explorer
spoolsv
svchost
svchost
svchost
services
lsass
winlogon (depending)
csrss

system Idle Process

If anything else is running, check if you ARE actually running it and if you aren't, turn it off such as
aim.exe

download spybot SD. update profiles for ad-ware. find and delete. then immunize.

buy some more ram (256 extra is only like 30-40$ now, even less if you still use SDram)

run scandisk and defragment at least once every 2 weeks if you use your computer like mad (more than 4 houra a day)

hope this helps. Not to say you don't know what you are doing.... but.. I'm running Xp.. and I have been running this and ME since they both came out and I have had 1 crash due to an OpenGL lockup.

To add. I have a homebuilt system. 1.53ghz xp1800 Cpu and only 512 of ram. same system I have been using for a couple years now.

I only use codes when it's neccessary for me to advance through the game (or after I beat it)and I'm good with computers. Really, it is only the kids who have been given everything in life on a silver platter, and don't have to work for anything that act like this, because the way they live reflects onto the way they play. I hate to say it, but these are probably the kind of kids that will ask hackers for a BKB because they don't wanna work for the two items and the character stats they need to use it!

Now that he's finished high school he's doing his AS in computer science. i wanted to laugh (but just barely didn't). he is brilliant in math and yet he just can't function on these other games. i just don't understand. though he is routinely impatient.

i think it is a spastic culture of instant gratification mixed with a lack of respect/encourangement of reading and comprehension, covered with a thin barrier against imagination. i see too many of these kids nowadays.

heck, when i was young i was playing RPGs, strat games, card games, reading all sorts of stuff, etc. and so was the vast majority of my class. i just cannot comprehend the denseness of some people. they used ot be a rarity, but now they seem to be pouring out from the woodwork. it's like the whole society forgot how to read instruction manuals, grasp abstract concepts, and sit for longer than a nanosecond to work towards their goal. thoroughly aggrivating.

-o-;;; Gah...I have a "friend" (12 year old) that is just like this! >:O It makes the Z mad! The noob virus is upon us. Gwah, I freakin' 15, and I have been playing for...nay ~15ish~ years.(seriously, I have been playing, and understanding what I was doing, since I was about six months, no lie! [can't lie anyways, it's a sin. :3])

I hate people that pick up a game and cheat it from the start, skip through valuable (sp?) story, and mission details. He*l, I had to tell my 12 yea--let's just call him Flame, k--what the point of PSO is. >O<

The Z: "You didn't watch the entrance movie, did you?"

Flame: *clicking on buttons to hurry up and make a 'cool looking character'* "What movie?"

The Z: *sighs* "I hope you get 'owned'."

Flame: "Haha, what is a force, a jedi?"

>:P Ya, that pissed me off, because he kept going to each character class, trying to make a "cool character". Shoot me now, why don't ya. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

If it is skippible, they will skip it... XP

Oh ya, he did ask me what is the point of PSO when he couldn't get to Ruins on Normal. XD

I have to admit, I don't remember at all how the hell I unlocked Ruins for the first time. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif I think one time I went by a column, saw a target, pushed the button, then after beating Mines I realized one of the seals was gone. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I had gotten the one in Forest and Caves, then I beat the Mines without hitting the monolith there...I had to fight Vol Opt again.

What? You normally don't need to fight him again.

From what I remember, you go through mines the first time and find the gate. At that point, all the areas are reset. That means you must do Mines all over again even if you're in the same game. BUT, if you beat mines during the monolith phase, it stays beaten, at least on V1. o_O

Ok i am one of the few kids (im 13) who isnt a total retard at computers. Sure i dont know how to totally format a computer... but at least i know whats bad and whats right. close down all popups, run spybot and adaware now and then along with spyhunter, i know NOT to use aol... I only use cheats on VERY FEW games to screw around and then on missions and stuff i dont use cheats. For example i use cheats on 007 Nightfire for multiplayer so i can play different game modes and stuff, but thats it.. All the games i currently play, Resident Evil, PSO, Champions of Norrath, couple for the computer i dont cheat. So kids who arent on the computer alot may not be smart... but i at least have common sense. And Just for the record.... I recently upgraded(just 3 days ago) my computer to xp from ME... but let me tell you it is pissin me off what has been happening.. its either low mb ram(128) that makes games run very slow on this computer or just my software is all retarded... Playing counterstrike today...if any of you played...I tried to open the game in Open GL mode instead of software but NOOOO my computer has to be retarded and not let me... Also it runs about at 100-150 ping when it usually runs at a low, 50-60(i DO have broadband). Its just something wrong with my computer...

God forbid someone doesn't take a video game so seriously. I mean, what the fuck are they thinking?!

Mocking someone's intelligence purely on grounds of them not caring about a game's storyline [especially considering how weak your average plot tends to be] is a bit ridiculous. There are people who want to play games as opposed to watching them. This is proven true by the continued production of mind-numbing multi-platinum "platformers".

While I love a game with depth, for lack of a better word, just as much as the next person, I won't flaunt the amount of elitism some of you are when people don't want video games for the same reason I do.

There's a difference between "not caring about the storyline" and "not knowing your mission orders." http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

That comment was actually directed more to the responses your original rant received.

However, I should go as far as saying that perhaps your nephew doesn't want a game that smacks him in the face. Nothing wrong with being a Super Mario child.

I didn't have to fight him again? F(censored)! Oh well, I got the extra EXP from the second run on Opty anyway. Thanks, Kodia. And, to stay on topic, I don't know anyone who has the n00b gene, but I do feel thoroughly sorry for the people who have to put up with those who have the n00b gene.
