Are you getting it? And for pc, or are you going to wait for the Xbox version?

Personally, I think that since the Xbox doesn't meet even the bare minimum that the PC needs, it's going to be like the Snes version of Doom.

I'll probably get it for the PC, I have a decent gaming PC, most people don't so I can see why the xbox version could be popular.

Most people have prebuilt PC's such as compaq, or DELL or something like that which usually have intergrated or just really crappy graphics cards such as the Geforce FX 5200

Why spend all that money upgrading your PC so you can play the game [ala Deus EX 2] when you can wait for the XBox version?

Assuming these points-
1- They can actually get the coding right.
2- You have one. Not everyone has or wants an Xbox.

A for me, since I have a new Dell, with all I need but a little more RAM, I am getting the pc version. Already have a full prepayment on it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

But for most people to spec up their PC's it'd cost more than buying an XBox and the game itself.

Not everyone has or wants a PC either, especially when they become obsolete every few months.

Hey, hey, hey. No name calling. Were not a bunch of fanboys here, right?

Anyways, I am just going to wait until the Xbox version is released. My PC sucks and could not handle Doom 3. Besides, have you seen some of the movies for Xbox Doom 3? Even if it is a bair minimum like you said, it still looks freakin incredible. And the Xbox version has something the PC version lacks: Coop mode over Xbox Live.

Definitely PC. I'll be playing at 1600x1200 resolution with texture quality set to High and 2X antialiasing. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif For anyone looking for a great higher end graphic card, both the Nvidia 6800 GT and Ultra will get the job done, especially if your mobo supports 8x AGP http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Now I just have to wait for either Nvidia or ATI to release a 512MB version so I can play Ultra without worrying about texture compression. Over at TEAM RADEON (http://www.teamradeon.com/) there is word that ATI may be releasing a 512MB card this fall (I've seen it mentioned other places also.) They are a new site, but I think once they start getting their content put up, it will be really nice.

Sorry if this was mentioned somewhere else on these boards (I rarely visit here anymore lol) but if you would like to see how your current system might perform in playing Doom 3, go to [H]ARD|OCP (http://www.hardocp.com/) and checkout the hardware guide http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I just saw the hardware guide before coming here...and the low quality pics were fantastic looking...considering I seen low quality graphics in games before and that is not what I think of when I hear that term. And from the way they described it, they coded the game perfectly so that the game will run smoothly for the high end and low end systems while looking very impressive (and that is the important aspect).

PS. I can't wait! I was thumbing through the strategy guide at work today...oh man, does The Cyberdemon look awesome!

Yeah, I just saw some footage of the Cyber Demon in action and its a pretty daunting beast for sure http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

BTW you're right Rune, even the lower quality setting looks amazing. The game will auto adjust to your video card when you install it, but I have heard from those who were lucky enough to get the game early that you can usually boost it up a little more than what the auto config sets it at and it still runs great.

I don't want to spoil anything so I'll add this:

SPOILER BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Spiders are not back nor is the Spider Brain (which sucks hugely, but there is another spider-like creature that I think you'll enjoy http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.) There are some very cool new enemies that have been added though. There is a video posted that shows some game play with the Cyber Demon and I can't remember where I found the link. I do have the video saved though and could grab a few stills of the Cyber Demon from the video if anyone is interested. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Well, from what I've read, I seriously doubt anyone will be disappointed. The visuals and audio are spectacular and the atmosphere is genuinely creepy. In fact it makes other horror themed games look kinda lame in comparison (I still have high hopes for Silent Hill 4 though.) The gameplay, although not revolutionary, is extremely smooth and incredibly polished (OMG I'm starting to sound like an advertisement LOL.)

Anyway, for anyone who picks it up and wants to meet online for some multiplayer action, my XFire name is violetskye. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/mac.gif let's try not to make this into a mac vs pc thread.

Oh, I hope the Doom 3 soundtrack is as good as the first two, but I suspect it will be more darker and ambient to fit the newer atmosphere of the game.

Heh, of course I do. I'm just burned out on PSO (still really looking forward to PSU though) so I've taken a break from any of the PSO related forums.

On a topic related note, I found the link to the Doom 3 videos (one of which I used to grab the Cyber Demon pics.) If you decide to check them out, remember that the first video shows the Cyber Demon towards the end so if you don't want it ruined for you, avoid that video.

DOOM 3 VIDEOS (http://www.harvsnews.com/doom3mods/).
Bear in mind that the videos have horrible framerates and do NOT give an accurate representation of the game in motion. Either the person who made the video was playing the game with settings that were too high for a smooth frame rate or the video itself was not recorded at a smooth framerate (possibly to reduce the filesize.) It looks like a FRAPS made video set at maybe 15 fps. Anyway, I've seen alot of other player made videos and they were silky smooth http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

BTW Vroomfondel, according to Id, there will be a MAC version of Doom 3 also, so you definitely won't be left out http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

if i put doom3 in my pc it would spit it back out and ask if i was trying to kill it.

my laptop exceeds all the specs required other than a good graphic card. its lacking the graphical capabilty of a 3 year old with a crayon.

so i'll be xboxing it!! which is a shame, as any fps fan will tell you there is no replacement for a mouse and keyboard. why couldn't mircosoft just release a damn mouse and keyboard like sega did for the dreamcast?!?

and hey, at least the box version will have a co-op mode. the only thing im really worried about is that it will be a horrible conversion. not in graphical terms, because it looks good even when its ugly, but in frame rate.

a friend of mine got thief 3 the other month and i was shocked at just how choppy it was. and considering just how much more system hungry doom is...
im just hoping that the brains over at id/Vicarious Vision can get it running smoothly on the box. i dont care if they have to drop the graphics a little more, just as long as it preforms. course, its id, so im sure they'll not be releasing a sub-standard conversion.

gamespy got their hands on a copy and are doing a day by day update on doom 3 over here http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/doom-3/535138p1.html. at time of writing the game has crashed twice before even really getting started.

enjoy it my pc enabled american friends, over here we still have 11 days left. and 74 days give or take for the xbox version. and lets hope mircosoft or some clever third party manufacturer releases a keyboard/mouse combo for xbox fps. i think that the system has enough shooters to justify it, with lots more coming out soon. though there are keyboards arent there? just need a mouse!

PEACE!!!

I would be willing to bet that the Xbox version will both play and look great. PC vs Xbox isn't really a fair comparison, so you have to judge Doom 3X (I call the Xbox version Doom 3X lol) on its own merits.

I wouldn't be surprised if some third party company comes out with a keyboard/mouse peripheral to use with it. Although I will be receiving the pc version tomorrow, I will still try out Doom 3X when it is released just to see how well the conversion went, and again, I don't think Xbox users will be disappointed (unless they really are forced to play with the controller lol.)

BOC
Aug 2, 2004, 05:49 PM
yeah ur rite, shouldn't really judge them like that.

but im sure most xbox users wont be too upset at having to use the controller, as all those halo tournaments im sure will have honed their shooting ability. i know i have http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

the xbox controller (S-version, for my small and gilr like hands) in my eyes is the only sub for a keyboard mouse combo.

but im sure it will rock. but that fearful voice will nag away until it sees release.

PEACE!!!

heh, I stopped by the Gamestop where I had prepaid for Doom 3 and they refused to sell it to me until tomorrow even though they had already received them LOL. I got to pick up the game...it defaults on low with a resolution of 640x480. It stutters at some points, but nothing to make the game unplayable (sucks when I have two Imps on me when it happens though), but the game is so far amazing.

So far the game has been spectacular. Its easily the best looking game I've ever played. The thing to remember with Doom 3 is that its all about atmosphere. I've read a few negative reviews from people and I think its because they are expecting some revolutionary game play. Doom 3 is all about dark rooms and tons of things to kill and thats what it does best.

Gameplay is pure twitch FPS and nothing more. You do have mission objectives but they are clearly laid out and for the most part, pretty straight forward in terms of accomplishing your goal. So if you go into the game realizing that its not supposed to be groundbreaking in terms of gameplay, and if you can enjoy it for what it is (basically a sci-fi/horror shooter) then I think you'll really enjoy it. The game oozes with a creepy ambience and the lighting is amazing which totally adds to the overall feel of the game. Play it in the dark with the surround sound jacked up on a good size screen and you'll get that "watching a scary movie" feeling.

If FPS shooters don't interest you, you may not enjoy it nearly as much. I can see where people consider the gameplay repetitive, after all you are going from area to area killing baddies and thats about it. But because its so well done and polished, and because the mood and atmosphere are so incredibly enagaging, it just may draw you into it even if you don't normally like FPS. Anyway, thats my $.02 http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Doom has always been nothing but pure shooting. Doom 3 should'nt be any different, infact it'd be a damn sin to the series if it was changed.

It's always been about running around, getting shocked, and unloading as many rounds as you can at whatever moves.

I get kind of tired of games like FarCry and other games that involve solving puzzles and all that, it's nice to go back to the roots abit.

Still waiting for my copy to get sent from EBGames, but I have off thursday and friday, so I can wait.

A PC requires considerably higher requirements to produce the same performance achieved by a console. This is because consoles run games alone, whereas PCs run games on top of the OS and any extra programs you may have running. The OS alone may be running dozens of processes that you're not even aware of.

This is why the Dreamcast was able to produce graphics that PCs of its time were incapable of, despite having only a 300MHz processor in a time when 800MHz was a standard for PCs. The system is dedicated to the game, so the game can therefore make use of all of the console's power. The same thing goes for the GameCube, the Xbox and the PS2. All things considered, the Xbox is over-powered as far as this generation's consoles go. I'm quite confident that the Xbox version will be every bit as shiny as the PC version.

VioletSkye

I agree, I think people will really be surprised at how well Doom 3X turns out. Id creates quality games and I'm sure they would not have allowed Vicarious Visions to handle the developement for it unless they felt sure that:
A. The Xbox was capable of handling a repectable version of it.
B. That Vicarious Visions would do the game justice.
I would be willing to bet that Doom 3X will be the best looking Xbox game to date once its released. As I said before, Doom 3 isn't groundbreaking in regards to gameplay, but for pure old school FPS with lots of style, Doom 3X should be great.

However if you read through any of the other game boards, you'll hear alot of Halo 2 fanboys badmouthing the game. Even though they are both FPS, a comparison between the two really isn't fair. Halo 2 is gonna rock bigtime, I have no doubts about that, but it also represents the latest generation of FPS which is heavy on multiplayer gameplay. It would be a shame if Halo 2 stole all of Doom 3X's thunder, because they will both excel in their given task (Doom 3X will enagage the player in a creepy single player environment full of suprises, whereas Halo 2 will place you smack dab in the middle of a giant war that is taking place.

Doom 3 was designed with the singleplayer experience in mind. There are a TON of Doom fanatics out there still to this day, and I can see alot of old school players screaming foul if Id had tried to reinvent the gameplay for Doom 3. They have said there won't be another Doom game and that they want to develop a new IP (internal project) which means that they will have free reign on this next game to be innovative and expand on the current FPS experience.

Anyway, there is room enough on the Xbox system for both games and I think that both games will satisfy fans. I also think both games will look great and play smoothly and you don't even need to worry about upgrades LOL. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

BTW, I'm working on a new mod (there are some cool ones already out including one that features a flamethrower) and I am looking to modify the look and sounds of a few weapons to start off with. If anyone else is interested in working on some mods let me know http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

As I said before, Doom 3 isn't groundbreaking in regards to gameplay, but for pure old school FPS with lots of style, Doom 3X should be great.

....and thats all we want!!

pure all out shooting and death!!!

none of this nampy pampy stealth crap that has been bogging the genre, or another run of the mill WWII shooter or one with a 'delicate hint of role-playing and lemon freshness'.

we want a shooter. with style. and guns. and shit scary moments.

PEACE!!!

Speaking of mods, I'm going through and rewriting/adding PDA emails LOL. Its pretty funny to see the changes in game while you're playing. I am still looking for a way to open the RoQ video files (cinemas). So far I've tried WMP, Divx, RealPlayer and Quicktime without any luck.

Also the strategy guide left out a ton of console commands. If you were wanting to spawn some flying creatures use the following:

spawn monster_flying_cacodemon
spawn monster_flying_lostsoul

I found those by openning the pak000.pk4 file and looking through the .def files in the DEF folder. I also messed around and found that you can spawn sentrys, the only problem is that I can't get them to activate LOL. For anyone who wants to experiment try:

spawn char_sentry

The sentries themselves run along a set path with your character, and then there is a point that they shutdown on as programmed, that way you're not taking them through the entire game. No doubt you prolly won't be able to have sentries spawned without there being a route coded for them.

So far, very exciting. Some nice touches, and a scary experience so far.

Enter room with flashlight at the ready to peer into any dark corners, peak around corners, then as something jumps out of no where you flip to your weapon and shoot it to hell as quick as possible.

I haven't gotten too far, but every room is a new scary moment as you wonder whats going to crash through to you. =]

I've found the ai_character_sentry.script file and I think it will be possible to create a mod where you can spawn sentrys that are active and will simply follow you. If you look through the various "states" they show:

// States
//
void state_WaitForTrigger();
void state_Idle();
void state_Killed();
void state_FollowPath();
void state_Wait();
void state_GetCloser();
void state_CantReachPlayer();
void state_Lead();
void state_FindPlayer();
void state_Combat();
void combat_chase();

The state_Idle(); state which is triggered with a spawn can be changed to either state_FindPlayer() or state_Combat(); easily. I'll experiment with it tonight and see what I can do http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

On an unrelated note, I found where all the audio logs are kept. You can find them in pak003/sound/VO/audio_logs if you want to sit and just listen to them without running the game (I've found its easier to listen to them without all the other ingame noises going on.) Also, the sound for all the UAC videos can be found in pak003/sound/VO/video.

Another update, I made a small mod that gives you infinite Soulcube usage, without having to kill 5 enemies or use the give all command. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Personally, I think that since the Xbox doesn't meet even the bare minimum that the PC needs, it's going to be like the Snes version of Doom.

...What the hell kind of statement is this? Have you any idea how great the difference is between what it takes to run a game on a PC and what it takes to run it on a console?

For starters, PCs have to be running an OS in the background, which alone takes up a good deal of system resources, then there are all the programs running on your computer at any given moment, and there's the fact that your computer isn't designed to solely play games on at any given moment, unlike consoles...
