Sega, why oh why?
It's fantasy, not phantasy. In Japanese, it's not even possible at all to use 'ph'!
What's with this? Is it a bad joke? Can't they spell? Does it suppsedly look cooler?

Or were they scared if it was called FSO everyone would start calling it FSOD? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

(Another question, what's 'w'? Japanese people say it all the time. Has it got anything to do with the v-pose or something?)

I'd pick the "cooler" part, just like many companies use misspelling etc.

i think the w is like a grin... like this
^w^ of that sort.

I guess you've been playing BB and seeing it?

No; GC only as of yet.
I'm still not sure why I should play BB, apparently a lot of people here do.

Yes, w is a grin. The reason being: W is short for warau, the verb for "laugh". When you see people saying a single kanji, they're likely using the "wara" part of warau. Given the Japanese propensity for shortening things, it's often just "w"

"Grow up, Aredhel!"

"You're so immature Aredhel!"

"WTF is wrong with you Aredhel???"

My gut feeling tells me they picked "Phantasy" to distinguish their games from the Final Fantasy series... o_O

That seem's to make to most sense, however, I don't really recall Final Fantasy being too popular back when Phantasy Star was satrting. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Someone correct my ignorant mind, but didn't Phantasy Star come first?

I'm pretty sure.

And on another note, the Phantasy Star series began a LONG time before FSOD ever existed.

Phantasy Star was the first console RPG released in the United States. In Japan, however, it is pre-dated by Dragon Quest (Released as Dragon Warrior in the US), and Final Fantasy was released in Japan shortly before Phantasy Star.

It's also worth mentioning that Phantasy Star Online was the first online console RPG released, anywhere.

And for the record, "Phantasy" is an accepted English spelling of "Fantasy". Observe (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Phantasy). Why it was chosen over "Fantasy" I can't be certain, though I suspect that it was chosen because it was different from the common spelling-- which would be fitting, because Phantasy Star was different from the common game. The heroine was female, the dungeons were 3D, and the game itself was considerably less linear than any other game in its time. The designers struggled to avoid all of the cliches that were common when the game came out.

Personally I think The "Ph" is rather cool, it stands out and that is the master plan. Jesus H isn't there something better to discuss!?

Yeah, "Pantasy Star Online" just seems to paint the wrong image, doesn't it?

Well that's probably one of the more "modest" pictures of Sil'fer. But it is appealing to a demographic isn't it...?
