Beckenbauer says Germany were lucky to beat U.S.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former Germany captain and coach Franz Beckenbauer said that the three-times winners were lucky to beat the United States 1-0 in their World Cup quarter-final.

"America were clearly the better team for 90 minutes," said Beckenbauer, an analyst for Germany's pay-television network. "We'll have to raise our game considerably after this. Hopefully, good fortunate will remain faithful to us.

Beckenbauer also said Germany were fortunate the referee failed to award the Americans a penalty kick four minutes into the second half when German defender Torsten Frings handled on the line after Oliver Kahn had half-saved a Gregg Berhalter shot.

"It's actually a clear penalty kick when one's hand touches the ball on the goal line," he said. "It should have been a penalty."

Beckenbauer, who helped Germany win the World Cup as a player in 1974 and led them to the title as coach in 1990, said Germany had been passive for long stretches against the Americans.

"I can't explain it," he said. "Leading 1-0 you have to keep trying to penetrate into the other team's defence."

Beckenbauer said even though the Americans had played strongly, Germany would probably not have survived had they faced a more dangerous opponent.

"The opponent wasn't Brazil or England or Argentina," he said. "This was America!"

The US team played a good game, probably their best in the tourney. Still, there's no way they would have won the cup. By making it to the elimination round, the team made a huge statement, which was what they were going for. Realistically, I wouldn't count on a US victory until 2010.

Are you serious about this?

I think you should increase the amout of years of 40 or 50... ^_^;;;

BTW US team improved a lot since last World Cup. I think their main problem is a lack in pure techinc.

With the growing interest in soccer in the states, I think the US can win the 2010 or 2014 or 2018 cup. Call it American arrogance http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

With the US team gone, I'll be cheering for the other longshot, the south koreans.

So, was it luck that America got this far, or did we actually improve that much since the last world cup?

beats him with stick.

ok aside from that lets look at facts, aside from goal keeper our average sqaud age is 24 which is v young, also we have look v impressive got out the group of death and lost to either one hell of a fluke or a great goal.

but 2006 most our player will be in there prime + we were missing steven gerrad so to look at the facts i can see england winning the 2006 world cup, also the weather suits us.
