PSOBB: Trail level 20 question

When a character gets to level 20 in the trail, what happens? Do they become unplayable? Or can you still play them, just without being able to level? I need to know, cause it would kinda suck with me getting my RAmarl to level 20, and being unable to use her until I find someway to buy a HL behind my moms back.

They become unplayable if I'm correct, you aren't able to play with them anymore until you renew your HL.
