Okay. I made a semi-joking thread about Kuda must die in FKL. Cuz, in the RL pic comment thread Kuda made a comment about how I look like some girly man in a J-drama.

See. I spent most of my child and adult life being told that I look like a dude. With the abundance of body hair(says my dad), short hair and not wearing pink dress and not so girly attitude in general. I didn't really quite conform to what people believe "girls" should be, I guess? People always think I am a boy, I have actually been kicked out of the female washroom once when I was about 10-ish by an old lady. Well, some of you find it funny now, but to me at that tender age it hurt me more than anything else.

From time to time even now, some people like to say I look like a dude cuz I have thick eyebrows. ... or again, just not conforming. Not wearing mini skirts and low cut shirts or what not. It piss me off. The stereotypes, the expectations, all these shit. I am 100% female, how I dress myself up does not change the fact that I am a female, and just because I don't conform doesn't mean that you can insult me.

For the longest time, I have loathed the fact that I don't have a Y chromosome. But I worked my way through to accept it, and I blame all those stupid people who want to enforce the stereotype on me and made me loathe myself and hope they suffer some serious pain.

... Ya. So Dammit, stop making fun of people. Especially me, I don't look like a fucking dude. Leave me alone.

I'm sorry Navi, actually, I allways thought you were female. it's just the way you looked in those snap shots, it really looked like that guy on TV. And he looks pretty darned feminine I'll tell you.

I seriously thought he was a girl until my Exchange partner told me he was a guy. The glasses and the way your hair was looks almost identical to his.

So, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. I meant it all in good humor.

Hmmm, what can be done about this? Perhaps if you actually wore a little more makeup.... I can see how you might look like a guy with those glasses on... and yeah... definitely tweeze those eyebrows http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I am sorry to hear that people still say stuff like that. It's one thing, when kids say it at a young age, since they don't know any better (or maybe they should but are still a bit immature).

People really need to think before they speak, some people find certain things funny that may have been a big problem to someone when they were younger, or even today.

Stereo-types are the worst. When people compare you to what the stereotypical person of your kind "should be", according to the majority of society, there's something wrong. You should never feel that you are wrong for how you dress, or how you look, it's their fault for thinking that you should/look be like this group of people just because you are a girl.

I know how hard it is to put up with what people say about your looks. It's never fun to see someone laughing at you and whispering to a friend, or telling you what they find to be wrong with your looks. It's not something anyone should have to put up with.

(I'm not bashing anyone, I'm not sure what happened. But this is how I feel on the subject)

I can understand where you're coming from Navi, and from my perspective, you are not an unattractive girl (from the picture thread in Off-Topic).

I used to face similar ridicule in high school, but what I think many people fail to understand is that physically conforming or uncomforming to societal fashion doesn't shape your personality in any which way.

Yes it does. It shouldn't, but it does. So many people form their personality around their residual self-image, and who can really blame them? It's quite normal to consider how you view yourself in accordance to how the rest of the world perceives you. As such, many form their personalities in accordance to expectation; how they think they should act in accordance to how they have made themselves look.

Moreso, I know what you were trying to say: in the end, it truly does not matter how you look, as your personality is the only thing that defines you. But when you look at things from an uncloistered perspective, don't people usually act how they *think* they should? Don't people *think* they look exactly how they should (residual self-image, remember?)? Thus, 99% of the time, there is a direct relationship between act and appearance - how could you so easily disregard looks just because you don't possess what much of the populace does? Isn't this sort of a skewed viewpoint in itself? Hmm...

Well.
I guess I just don't see the point of having to wear mini skirts and high heels and wear tons of makeup to prove that I am a girl?

Neither do I, and really, you don't have to. I think what gives you a tom-boy appearance is the clothes, which btw I DIG, but considering you get that sort of style quite a lot around Manchester, it looks totally cool and normal to me >_>

Seriously, try not to be too self concious, IMO you are very pretty, screw anyone that doesn't seem to see that http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Thanks everyone for replying. (even the joke one http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif)
I do wanna point out that this is not directed in Kuda, but rather Kuda reminded me something that was unplesant for me in the past and I kinda went on that tangent. Well, I do try not to let them get to me, just from time to time it gets annoying when people keep telling me how I "should" be, appearance of behaviour of thinking. Ya.

It's good you got that out of your system, Navi.

Anyways, try to stop promoting yourself as a 40 yr old fat guy? Then people won't push it on that topic.

People feel the need to express themselves through the clothes they wear because of media influence and peer pressure, whether it's for attention, conforming, or rebelling. This thinking is not independant in itself, but dependant on societies definitions on specific status symbols.

The only reason why many "gothic" people dress up in black and wear dark makeup is to be apart of a group or clique, and the way they "act" is developed through adopted behavior.

The same idea can be said about what many would call "Jocks", "Computer Nerds", "Skaters" and "Tom Boys."

Basically, in other words, if you have an underlying objective to flaunt the clothes you wear in one way or the other, you're asking to be judged, and rightfully so.

The main problem with society today is that people put way to much emphasis on tangible items while underutilizing brain power.

YOu missed my point completely. The incident with Kuda was just s sparkle on the topic, not the cause itself.

I am talking about people in real life here. And I don't go around telling people I am some 40 years old man.

Because in the end the whole "40 year old greasy man" is more for the humor related to online identifications of "female" and "male", and isn't really related to the real issue at all. It's not like Kuda's mention would have unearthed some deep buried feelings from the past, it was just something that reminded her of things from her real life that have already happened, and formed a rant based on that.

And navi(nator), you're in the right for feeling you shouldn't have to wear skirts and high heels and such. Your style fits for you, and that's really all that matters. Besides... how many of those people have you even seen ever again? >_>
