I tried to tell him if he posted the pics himself, it'd make him look oh so much cooler. But.. meh. I'm posting them for him.

This has my HUnewearl Kirin and his HUmar, Gaz Mk.III. When I was online, we had set partner characters for eachother. It was kinda weird, but we decided it would be funny with Kirin and Mk III. Plus, it's so kawaii!

Heck, English was built on taking words from other cultures, being the fusion of French and Anglo-Saxon German to begin with. Using "kawaii" as a synonym for "cute" is a perfectly legitimate subsitution, in my opinion.

Yes, but that's how all words/phrases get added to language...small populations pick them up as jargon/slang and occasionally spread to the larger mass. "Avant-garde" has been around in English use forever, but back in the day it was just a pretentious French-ism. Whether random Japanese phrases will ever spread to English in any way is an open cultural question, but it isn't impossible, especially with the upswing in mainstream interest in Japan.

Actually, "kawaii" is probably more accurate than "cute" in a weird sort of way, because virtually all PSO artwork is done in a manga-style (probably because of the source material). When I hear someone say "kawaii" (actually, the fact that I have, in college, hung around people that said "kawaii" probably says something) I immediately assume that whatever they're talking about is cute in the style of cuteness prevalent in Japanese animation or manga as opposed to cute in the way a stuffed penguin is cute. It adds specificity to the description, much as saying "katana" rather than "sword" adds many details.

That being said, Ian is still right. It does make you sound like an otaku.

Come to think of it otaku is one of those words that's been assimilated into English. It has a very different (and far less perjorative) meaning here than it does in Japanese.

But after all, we're talking about a language in which "bootylicious" has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
