I'm feeling motivated and inspired so I want to make a web site for my art and crap.
Can anyone suggest a good program to use?
Free place to host it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Word Pad and Html. Possibly I could host it, but no promises.

http://www.imageshack.us/ does the job.
As does http://www.photobucket.com/ but you need to sign up for that.

for eh... hosting pictures at least.

Freeweb has the generic website for you, but wordpad+http skills are superior than some Freeweb.

Get Dreamweaver; it's good for starting out.

Why wordpad? XP REAL men use Notepad.

Notepad, basic HTML. Just about all free sites suck these days, so poke around until you find one you can tolerate. Paid hosting isn't that expensive, neither is registering a domain name. If you go with paid, I recommend 1and1.com. I use them and haven't had any troubles, and their basic home package is more than you'll ever need for 5 bucks a month.

1and1 is good and Bluehost (http://www.bluehost.com) is very good also.

A descent free host (that also gives you 1 MySQL server and supports php) is http://www.100webspace.com/

As others have mentioned, you can use notepad, wordpad, word (ughhhh), Frontpage (more ughhhhh), Dreamweaver, netfusion, adobe GoLive, etc. If you want to kick it up a notch, slap a little Flash on there. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I agree with Pix and Zel. Dreamweaver MX is a sexy beast.

I'm sure that you can "borrow" it from someone, or just take advantage of a student discount (assuming that you have one).

Dreamweaver MX is a great program if you really have no other place to turn. I myself prefer hard-coding with stuff I learned from W3schools (http://www.w3schools.com). But that's just me.

For added fun, after you get the Photobucket account for your pictures (it is a bandwidth saver, trust me) and everything else set up with a server, get a DotTK redirecting address (http://www.dot.tk) and have it go straight to your site. Makes things really easy on the typing.

Ultraedit. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Even 1337er than notepad! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
Or better yet, find a egghead friend and make him do the coding. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

...
Ya. I meant, use Dreamweaver. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

If you like a visual drag n' drop interface, I'd say go with Adobe GoLive.

It's what I use to make my site because I don't understand code all that well, and it seems super easy to use. There are tutorials around for it on the web as well, and I've only ran into one thing that I don't know how to make it do.

With GoLive, you pick elements you need out of a pallete to the side. (text box, image area, image map, layout grid, color...etc you name it, you can drop one onto a page)

What will your site and art be all about?

If you dont really know much html, try HTMLPad if it is still alive. You can point and click the code into place, and see what each tag will do. Thats how I learned.

I could host it for you. My dad and I have a website set up for our new hosting business, but I don't think it's working yet. PM me if you're looking for a host or domain name or something.

I used Freewebs to make my little BB screenshot gallery. It's not so bad, but if you know your HTML well enough, you might as well just have someone host your stuff for ya.

The web site is working, and its http://www.ez-webhost.biz. It's separate from our home network, so it's not screwed up right now. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with.

Hey, I love your drawings!

To run your site you need an FTP program, text and graphic editors.

An FTP program I find really good (and free) is FileZilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/).

Many suggested Dreamweaver for HTML, and I agree it's really good and complete! However, it's quite expensive and you can actually find cheaper alternatives.

You could get a text editor and learn HTML and CSS by your own or you could get a cheap but good software, such as TopStyle (http://www.bradsoft.com/topstyle/).

For graphic I assume you are already useing Photoshop, The Gimp or PSP.

I don't know any free Web hosting service (good, I mean!) but with a little money you can find (http://www.findmyhosting.com/) a *nix hosting plan that will allow you to have your own domain name, plus many feautres such as custom e-mail server, database support, scripting support, etc... In this way you'll be able to publish your contents (blog, art) and learn a lot more about making your Web site in the process.

If you need some free space, I can give you a slice of mine as long as you won't use it for crazeee forums hot-linking http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Just PM me if you are interested.
