photon spheres

I was wondering exactly what these were for, i have been trying to figure this out for a while now and suddenly realised i should ask you guys, considering you know alot about the game. Anyway, if one of you could tell me what they were used for that would be great, and i did try using the forum search, but it never loads, so sorry for the inconvenience.
