So, I went to the store last summer to get myself a 160 GB portable hard drive. Bought, rebate, got lots of bang for my buck.

WRONG.

Turns out it wasn't 160 GB as they fucking put on the box, but rather 160 BILLION gigabytes! What does that mean? That I got jacked TWELVE GIGABYES.

Fast-forward to this afternoon. I buy myself a 25-pack of DVDs to back up my videos on. I select an Anime series. It's 4.69 GB. I check the DVD, and it's written 4.7 GB on it. Good, I'm near perfect!

WRONG.

Turns out those motherfuckers went through the same bullshit as the guys who made the hard drive: they CLAIM it's in gigabytes, when it's really in THOUSANDS of bytes. What does that mean to a stupid lamer like you?

One thousand bytes is just that. 1,000 bytes.

One KILObyte is 1,024 bytes.
One MEGAbyte is 1,024 kilobytes.
One GIGAbyte is 1,024 megabytes.

As you can see, that shit adds up pretty quickly.

I am 100% certain I could sue those fucking idiots for false representation.

That really sucks. You should definetly go get a refund or something. If they say no, threaten to sue. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Uh, yeah, you didn't know this? O_o;;; That's, um... Damn. Do your research next time, my child. All the companies do that to make things look bigger than they actually are. The actual definition of a Gigabyte is 1024 MB, but the industry standard is generally 1000MB.

True. However, most hard drives sizes I (as well as my friends) have encountered are only a decimal value (or a while single number value) off of the said value on the package. This is 12 GB. To an extent, this is a problem.

I would reccomend returning it to the store anyways and see what their reply is...

P.S. Isn't there a fine print that says the value advertised is only an estimate?

I notice that in ads for flash drive mp3 players and such. I haven't seen one in terms of memory drive storage. Its the same either way, yes, but the principle is still there. That's the catch, eh? I'll go check on that later. -_-

Yeah, that lame shit happens with most computer storage device. Like how my hard drive claims on the box that its 160gb but in reality its only 146gb. Think ive had the same occurance with several USB Flash Drives and my MP3 player.

I suggest mass protests over the loss of all those 24 bytes! We will fight them on the beaches! We will fight them in the stores! We will fight them at PC World! (only because PC World truely does suck big time)

Not to be a smartass or anything, but is 12 gigs really that big of a deal? The highest mark I would probably hit before reformatting would be at 120 gigs.

12 gigs is the equivalent of a little less than 19 CD-Rs. Or about 8,500 floppy disks.

I think that has to count for something.

By the way, just so you know. I take up 30 gigs on my 800 MHz, 25 gigs on my 933, 25 gigs on my laptop, 135 gigs on my portable hard drive, 3 full DVD-Rs and 30 full CD-Rs.

For me, who can't seem to have but 10 gigs of free space at a time, that's a HUGE deal. That's at least the full installs for Half Life 2, Doom 3, Counter Strike: Source, the Original Half Life and add ons from the Platnum pak, with some left over for salad.

Happens to me with USB drives all the time. My 512 megger is 493, my 128 is about 120.

12 gigs is a shitty loss though. That's alot of space. Anything more than 5 or 6 gigs less than advertised is shitty. =/
