View Full Version : PSOBB: Chinese Beta - Registration, Help & Player Matchup

I thought it might be a good idea to make a sticky topic for the PSOBB Chinese Beta. It seems we have enough people on the site interested in it (or already playing it), so maybe we can get a few more registered and coordinate servers / ships / blocks as well.

To register for the beta, you will either need to know Simplified Chinese OR be able to read one of these guides, written in plain English (some even containing pictures! Heh):

Dark Heal's Guide (pictures included):
http://www.pso-world.com/viewtopic.php?topic=92821&forum=1&30

Main PSOBB thread:
http://www.pso-world.com/viewtopic.php?topic=92141&forum=1&24

Some of the guides to the Japanese version of PSOBB may be helpful as well (especially for error messages and some other miscellaneous problems). The Japanese PSOBB support thread can be found here:
http://www.pso-world.com/viewtopic.php?topic=82963&forum=1&613

Okay, now for my extra brief mini guide to post-registration Chinese PSOBB:

Getting Started:
Once you load the PSOBB Chinese Beta client, you will have a small window with some options. The top option launches the game. You may want to configure the graphics settings first (which is the middle option). For windowed mode, select the left checkbox underneath the screen resolution, the right checkbox enables V-Sync. I found DarK-SuN's visual guide very helpful here (it also covers in-game menus, which you'll need later in this guide:

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/DarK-SuN/PSOBB/

Once at the game's welcome menu, log in by selected the bottom option. This will enable the top option which allows you to connect to a server. Next you will have to select a server.

Server Selection:
Once you're able to get all registered, there are some things you should know. First off, once you create a character on a server, you can only play that character ON THAT SERVER. If you're wanting to meet up with friends (or other english speaking PSO-Worlders), you may want to coordinate which server you create your characters on. If existing Chinese Beta PSOBB players want some company, please post which server you are on (by giving it's position from the top of the list... mine is 3rd server from the top for example). A screenshot of the server name might be helpful as well in case the order changes. If we have enough people on one server, we can just make it the "official" PSOW server so that everyone has a good chance of finding other English speaking players.

Current "Official" PSOW Server: Northern (pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/dh_v2/serverlist.jpg))
Current "Official" PSOW Ship&Block: Ship 5, Block 5
Recommended Game Names / Password: PSOW# / PSOW
(example: Game = PSOW1 / Password = PSOW)

Patching, Etc.
After selecting a server it will attempt to connect to the patch server, and will probably download a patch if it's your first time playing. A box of text should pop up at the top and then another at the bottom. After the 2nd box appears, you should be able to continue by pressing enter. If you downloaded a patch, the game will need to restart. After getting past the patch screen, you will get a connecting screen, just one line of Chinese text with a big Matrix-style backdrop http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif This will probably take some time to connect, but afterwards it will bring you to your character selection screen (if successful). There will be 4-slots, all empty. Select one and create your character (it's fairly easy to figure out). After creating your character, select it and hit enter, then choose the first option to log in. Here you will select your ship and block. Once in the lobby you will probably need to speak with one of the NPCs at the desk to, I'm assuming, get your hunter's license and begin your game. You also speak to the NPCs to join or create a game (when creating your game, you only need to enter a name in the first line, the 2nd line is for a password if you want one).

Playing the Game:
Obviously, the game is in Chinese. If you can't read Chinese, you may have some trouble. However, if you are familiar at all with the PSO user interface and options, you should be able to figure the menus out without too much trouble. Most of the menus are assigned F-keys for quick access (for example, I believe F2 brings up your inventory for quick weapon and armor swapping). The default controls use the WSAD keys for movement and the arrow keys for your quick actions (attacks, heals, etc.). Holding control brings up your secondary quick bar (the 4-slot one in the bottom right, not the big one), and pressing CTRL + ArrowUp will turn your camera to face the same direction as your character. If you have a Gamepad, I highly recommend using it, it makes things MUCH easier. The above visual guide can help with setting one up.

Everything Else:
Okay, I told you this was going to be brief... Basically, you can figure out a lot of things by using simple trial and error. It will take some getting used to, but after some time it's not too bad at all.

Hopefully we can get people on the same server/ship/block, which will make things easier and allow us to help each other out. Feel free to post any questions here and add any hints that might be helpful!

Thanks a lot for all the information. I'm considering gathering all the information I have found all over and putting it on a site in a step by step format, but we'll see. This works just fine, so I'd be doing it for me more than for anyone else :P

Anyway, I'm on, everything worked out in the end, but for some reason I can't get onto servers 1 and 3. I get a 916 error. Any idea what that is? Server 2 lets me on every time, so that's where I'll be going for now. Didn't try servers 4 to 6. Shame they won't let you make Ep. 2 games at the moment. Maybe it'll be unlocked in the next update.

Getting people together on one ship seems pretty much essential if we're to get any fun out of this, so pipe up!

Well, error 916 is... I'm not sure. We have no record of it. Can you take a screenshot of it? I'm going to guess and say that server 1 and 2 are having errors or matinence, while 3 is still open.

And remember, we have a support thread.

Also, I believe that 3-3-3 should be the PSO World ship for the beta. We'll soon be getting our own Blue Burst!

Is what? It's not in that faq and I'm not going through 41 pages to find it :P

Edit. Yeah, I can take one, but you're probably right about maintenance. I'll take a shot if it's still doing it tomorrow.

P.S. It was servers 1 and 3 that aren't working, while 2 is working. My bad.

I should update that thing, but I need Arislan's permission. Soon we'll be having many more people go on Blue Burst, so an update shouldn't be too hard to do.

Edit: Oh, thanks for getting the screencap, if you go on whenever, just take one, since we've never seen 916.

I just went on and got it:

I can get this and other stuff translated, but not until a week from now.

By the way, if people are worried about PC specs, I can tell you that I manage to run it on an Athlon 600 with a mighty TNT2 Ultra. It's not fast, but it's definitely playable.

I suggest the PSOW server be at Northern because its closest to US and my characters are on it. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
If you guys indeed decide to make a fixed server to play on, I'll update the pic.

Aha. Thank you.

Sounds good to me, as we just have to pick one really. I don't want to get too much into it and then find I'm isolated on a server. I'll create a character there tomorrow unless people think of a reason to pick a different one.

FOr PSO, i reccomend remapping your keys to directions to arrows and buttons to wasd, and f for your camera center.

I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy to have to play PSO with a keyboard. Thrustmaster Firebird is a PS2 type pad that's cheap, good and Blue Burst automatically set up all its buttons for me, bar one, so it was just like using the DC layout right from the beginning. I recommend it.

The Northern server sounds good to me as far as picking an "Official" server. If it's really the closest to the US (is there really a way to confirm this? heh), then it would make the most sense. My character is only level 6, so I don't care about switching... it takes maybe an hour to level back up. So how about we do Northern Server (#5 in the list, for now), ship 5, block 5. 5 - 5 - 5 for simplicity's sake http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I was playing on the southern server last night for a little while and it was MUCH more laggy than usual. With three people in the game with me, things were warping all over the place (tried fighting the dragon and died in what appeared to be one hit, but it was really two or three according to my teammates.. lol). Of course, I'm East Coast, so I doubt I'll get a good connection to any of the servers. If only they had an internet backbone running through the center of the earth...

Another suggestion... perhaps we should try to name all games PSOW1, 2, 3, etc. and password them all with the same password (PSOW). This will keep out the non-english speaking players. Nothing against them, but I had a couple games fill up with Chinese players yesterday and there was no room left for english-speaking PSOW players, who I would have preferred to play with.

Tomeeboy
Jan 28, 2005, 12:35 PM
Also, if we decide to do 5-5-5, I'll get screenshots of the server, ship, and block names and put them in the above guide.

Perhaps we can get a PSOW game or two going tonight at some point as well... would be a good way to break in the new home http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

The Eastern 1 and Southern 1 are the ever most crowded ones because they were the initial servers available. East, South, South West were added when the capitcity went beyond comprehension.

Eastern = Shanghi
Southern = Guangzhou
Northern = Beijing
South West = Chengdu

Even though these are my guesses, I think it is very likely to be correct since the Chinese publisher had held PSOBB events in these cities prior to the Beta test and they are the major cities in China.

I'll update the server pic and I'll be online at 5-5-5 tonight. Hope to see you guys there. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Tomeeboy
Jan 28, 2005, 04:32 PM
If Southern 1 was one of the first servers up, that would definitely explain why it was so laggy last night when I was on it. Do you notice any lag on the Northern server? Even when my connection to Southern 1 seemed decent, there was still a delay of a second or two when picking up items and things. It was ridiculous last night though... everything would kinda freeze up, then all of a sudden the screen would be filled with messages from other players, items were popping up everywhere, and all the monsters would be dead... lol.

Calx
Jan 28, 2005, 05:20 PM
I've been on 3 different servers now, and they all lag a little. Northern is ok, but the 1-2 second delay when picking things up, entering shops and so on is still there.

I'm going to go on now and see if I can meet up with any of you lot.

Yes, not compatible http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif Even the Chinese Beta characters aren't compatible with different Chinese Beta Servers (very crappy!). You could always drop by and kick it with us low level noobs http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

BTW... getting error 916 trying to connect to the Northern server http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif Will try a couple more times I guess.

Edit #2... Okay, made it on to the server, got my character created. Tried to join the PSOW1 game and it gave me error 100-something and booted me to the main menu, lol.

Edit #3... Now Error 916 some more. Dark_Heal.. you sure this server isn't overcrowded too? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Edit #4... Been trying every few minutes for about an hour with no luck connecting. Anyone else having this much trouble?

Yeah... it let me create a character, get to the lobby, and join a game. It never asked me for a password though (not sure if you guys had one set or not). I entered the starting room in the game and immediately got an error and was booted to the main menu. I haven't been able to connect to the Northern server since and I've actually had to CTRL+ALT+DEL the game to death because it keeps hanging at the connecting screen for like 10 minutes if I don't get error 916 right away.

I was able to get on most of the other servers on the first try :/

I got the 916 first time I tried, but not since then. I also got the "no. 100" and was booted midgame once, but other than that it's been ok. No different from the other servers. Taking a short break now, but I'll be on again soon. I'll do the PSOW pass if I don't join a game one of you people made. I didn't earlier.

Sorry to hear you're having a lot of trouble. I'm hoping you were just unlucky.

I think that server is being flakey tonight. More than 50% of the time now when I try to connect, it just hangs there, never connecting and never giving an error. The other 50%, I get error 916.. lol.

On a side note... PSOBB is taking up 100% of my CPU resources, but is not showing up under my process list for some reason (right clicking it's name under the Applications listing and selecting "Go to Process" does nothing). This is in WinXP task manager btw.

Edit: As an experiment, I'm going to let this sit at the connecting screen and see how long it takes for me to get an error or to actually connect. Have a few things to do in the meantime anyway and would rather not spend all Friday night trying to connect to PSOBB... lol. If it never gets on, I'll try again a bit later http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

completed ruins with Calx, no major problem besides being very laggy, but that happens to me on PSOGC at times too. So not sure if its just the servers or my problem.

we have more a problem trying to stay connected rather than actually getting on the game.

I've been trying literally all night to connect to the Northern server... It connected me ONE time in the last 4 hours and I was away from my computer. Came back in just in time to see it log me off to the main menu because I was idle... lol. The servers are down for maintenance every Tues 12am US ET time.

This week's upgrade from 1.18.5 to 1.18.6 includes:

1. Fixed the problem of names not appearing in the lobby at times.
2. Fixed a bug that may occur when storing items at the bank.
3. Increased the amount of words usable.

We wish everyone will continue to support us, and "Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst"

Sorry to you guys still having problems in connection, I hope those problems would be fixed before the end of beta test. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Edit: They unlocked the movie quest(forgot name) and rappy's holiday as Clan quest. And 9 other single player quest.

Hey Dark,

Any chance you could whip up a little mini guide to leveling in this beta? or perhaps just drop us a couple tips? I know there are some good quests for getting experience quickly, but it would be hard to find them without basically trying everything (or being able to read Chinese) http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif I find that most of the time I'm soloing, and running through the mines takes a while and is slow xp anyway http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Currently the multi-player quest that are available now are Mop up 1, Endless Nightmare 1 and Heat Sword. Heat Sword would be the best of those three. Go to the quest counter and pick the 1st choice then 1st again.

For FOs, Canabin trick works on PSOBB (I use that to brush up my lvs if I need it) but whether I am allowed to post this trick in PSOW, I'm not sure. This trick has been around for a long time and never fixed nor patched on PSOBB should mean that its allowed by SonicTeam.

For RAs, try to find a shot that steals EXP.

Some of the missions give good EXP but soloing would be a problem.

Thanks for the tips... I'll try that quest out later (will I be able to solo/access it in normal mode?). The Canabin trick is actually in one of our leveling/experience guides, I just saw it the other day. I suppose that would probably work for me as well if I used a Shot, just not as effectively (since I can't hit them all at the same time). However, it would cost me like 70 telepipes to get a level off it.. lol

I'd love to find an EXP stealing shot.. but I can't read what I'm picking up as it is... hehe. Keep an eye out for one for me?

I'll see if they let me on right now.

Edit: I have no words with which to adequately describe my dislike of the quality of the Chinese servers. It's too bad, really, because it's fun to play with you people.

Dang, got it to work on the first try, thanks to you guys!:D

It's cool, though it took me 15 minutes to find out how to move my character instead of just typing...stupid me:D

I still can't figure out how to make the shortcuts on the bottom of the screen. Anybody?

Also, if I understood correctly, you can play upto lvl 20 for free then you have to pay a fee to access the chinese server?

You will need a controller to play this game, not that you *must* have one, but your life will be much easier with one. Being a videogame port, PSO was desgined with a game controller in mind.

To set the shortcuts, go to the 2nd choice on the menu, then highlight the icon you wish to set and press any number on the number pad and its done.

Currently the Chinese Beta test is totally free, you can level as far as you want (I have seen lv 90s already). There is still no word of when the test will end, so for now, just play as much as you want. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Always glad to help.

Server Update:
Valentine's Day quest and Gallon's Shop has been unlocked.
The lobby has been changed into the Chinese New Year theme and will soon be changed to Valentine's Day theme later.

A few shots of the Chinese New Year lobby:
