I was wondering what your favorite fantasy series are and why.

For me, I hated reading till I started reading the Wheel of Time series. And since then have delved into the Sword of Truth series. I just started reading books majorly in October sometime; and since then have read the first nine of The Wheel of Time and the first four of the Sword of Truth series(which I have previously stated) this amounts to roughly 12,000 or so pages in the last 4 months or so. And I can't stop. Just this past Saturday I went and bought books for myself with my own money. Which is something I've never done before; and I spent about 100 dollars on them.

So I was wondering if you all liked fantasy as much as I do.

Yes. I'm a huge fantasy fan. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I loved the Shannara series, especially Heritage of Shannara. I could just relate to each of the characters easily, some more than others.

Probably David Eddings's The Belgariad and The Malloreon. The dialogue is just plain funny.

"There was a snake in her bodice!"

"Silk, what were you doing in Liselle's bodice?"

Hmm, I still read the Brian Jacques stuff as it comes out, and the Harry Potter series. But the stuff I'm currently reading is more modern. I've gotten hooked on Clancy, and most recently Kurt Vonnegut.

That Belrigard or whatever sounds funneh. I'll try to find it when I go to the mall tommorow. I prefer the good vs. evil complex in fantasy books I think. Because it gives the world a sense of urgency or something to strive for. But I sometimes think that fantasy are the older more mature brother to romance novels. Some of the sex scenes in the Sword of Truth series are quite.....detailed. But the stories are what drew me in. Especially in the Wheel of Time series. The characters are people you could probably identify immediatly in your own life.

Most of the fantasy books at Walden's are........forgot the name.....umm some sort of books I have no interest reading.

I also bought Tales of the Otori books 1&2. Do you know if these are any good?

I prefer Terry Pratchetts Discworld fantasy universe. Just love how it parodies things we take for granted and puts a fantasy twist on them.

One of the girls I know at school told me the Discworld series was hilarious. I am currently looking for them. As of yet I have been unsuccessful.

I'm reading Eddings' Enchanters Endgame right now in English.

I really like his presentation, but I think he "borrows" a lot of LOTR storylines.

Dragonlance. Not so much because it's my favorite but rather because one day I needed something to read, so I picked up one of the books. It's not the only fantasy series I read, since in most of the books, there are recurrent characters and it makes the story more enjoyable to follow. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'm not a fantasy fan much, I prefer sci-fi.

Latest read: The Gaean trilogy by John Varley(Titan, Wizard, Demon). Great trilogy, can't recommend it enough.

I haven't read much.

I have read the Sword of Truth series though, that was a pretty good read (Although I didn't enjoy Pillars of Creation nearly as much as the others).

I used to read a lot of fantasy novels, but I haven't in a while. Anyway, I would recommend the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin for more "traditional" fantasy. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary, China Mieville's novels are wonderful (I think I prefer The Scar). I also have to recommend Eddings and Feist. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Well thats the first book in the series, the colour of magic. You could start there, but alot of the ealier books can be picke dup and read in a random order (ive strangely still havent read Colour of Magic). I recomend any of the Death titles (Mort, Reaper Man, Hogfather) for a good read, or the City Watch titles as Vimes is such a likable asshole.

And I have to say the US covers to the Discworld books suck. What happened to the brilliant fantasy scenes that adorn the UK books?

Hey Frink did you know Goodkind just came out with Chainfire like a month ago. I'll be getting it tonight when my mom goes to the mall.

All of Eddings fantasies were great. The Elenium and the Tamuli were pretty good too, but the new series he is/was making is lacking. I think it's cause he's getting old or something.

I'm not so big on fantasy anymore though. Kind of got into sci-fi, even though most of it is crap.

I read the Dragon Riders of Pern series, or one at least. I thought I'd enjoy them immensily because dragons happen to be a favorite of mine. But at the end of the first one it left me feeling empty, like I just spent a few days of my life for nothing.
