PSO GC setting with USB modem

A friend of mine has problems connecting his GC to play online. He surfs the net on ADSL using a USB modem. He tries to connect his GC to his laptop running Windows XP Pro via network adapter and crossover cable, but he gets the following message: "failed to retreive IP from DHCP".
Can you tell me how should he set bot PC and GC?

A few quick things to try.
1. Power cycle the modem with the GC connected to laptop, then try connecting with PSO.
2. Manually set his GC IP address to the the same IP as his PC except for the last set of numbers (example: if his PC IP is 24.252.10.20, he could try setting his GC IP to 24.252.10.21.)
3. If neither option works, he may have to register the MAC address on the BBA with his ISP so that it recognizes it as a machine that is authorized to be on that network and will resolve an IP address to it.
