Defense or Evasion and secret gears "secret" ?!?

So I have my regular spirit shield and some secret gear, well the secret gear definately gives me more defense but less evasion, well which one matters more? I would have thought evasion but after testing it out it just didn't seem like I blocked any more than with the secret gear equipped. And well is there a "secret" to secret gear? Its description says "gear designed for stealth" but does it honestly do stealthy or anything different from a regular shield?

The descriptions don't really matter as much for a majority of the rare items. Same for Secret Gear.
