I'm going to be installing some versions of Linux (specifically Mandriva/Mandrake and probably Debian) on a spare computer, along with Windows.

Does anyone here use Linux? If so what version(s)? What do you think of it?

Also, do you use any type of Boot Loader? OSL looks good for what I think I'll be needing.

I used it to work last year, altough I can't remember the version.

Pretty good, considering it's free.

In my networking class, just to make us suffer our professor has us installs Fedora Core 1. Which is legacy release since, ya know, they have Fedora Core 3 which is complete out now, and that they're working on Fedora Core 4.

That, I'm semi-familiar with and the fact it comes with its own bootloader is a plus, if you choose to install it.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good version of Linux for a Linux newbie. I've heard horror stories of Kernel compling from a few friends, and with all the various versions out there, (Redhat, Mandrake, Fedora, ect...) I just can't pick! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I'd choose Fedora, personally. Priamrely because its the only Linux I'm used to. Other then RedHat 7.2.2, egad.

Only use Linux, however, if you've got a spare machine laying around though. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Redhat is probably the most n00b-friendly version. It's renouned for its relative ease of install.

Anticipate many re-installations, until you finally have the environment figured out.
