View Full Version : On Moving The Chat Channel

We've been juggling with the idea in the chat channel for a while and decided that it would be best to move #psow from EFnet, to another network.

I'll make it short and to the point.

There are two main reasons for the move:

CHANSERV
We've had numerous issues where the people owning the channel bots weren't there, or the bot didn't operate in the manner we'd normally expect. This caused times where there was only one operator on board, and he happened to be away, making the channel easy picking for trollers, spammers, etc. since the bots are the only ones with an automatic flood-kick and a list of bans, and no one was around to kick said trollers out. By using a bot supplied by the network to every channel, we can make sure operators can get their powers at any time without having to rely on other people's bots or other people's presence.

NICKSERV
Nickserv is a network bot that keeps track of the names people use in the chat. Using Nickserv, one can register his name, so that no one else may use it. What's the big deal? Here it is: we've had occurances of people logging onto the network and purposely using our names while we were disconnected. This prevented bot operators and other users to connect, causing a situation where very few operators would be in the channel at any given time, and the others weren't at the keyboard, leaving their client unable to connect because their name was in use and the client didn't know what to do about it. With a Nickserv, we can secure our names and force those who use them to choose another, which will help in stabilizing the connections of operators.

In the same shot, we'd also give the rules page a rewrite, by updating it and shortening it into a simple, 2-minute version of the traditional welcome message in the channel:

"House Rules: Be nice, be honest, type correctly, have fun. Don't be a pest. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif"

Changes to the Java chat applet would be minimal, involving only a small rewrite of the list of servers to connect to. We also have a small list of networks in mind to move to, though I can't list them right away due to my own memory being a bit faulty at the moment.

NOTE: This isn't a poll. It's a direct proposal to the administrators of PSOW and the final decision is up to them. We channel operators (Navinator, Prof_Frink, War Child, ABDUR101, Alielle, Da_Wrecka, DMambo, Mixfortune, Sef, Arislan, Dhylec, Pixelate and I) make this message public in case someone may feel the need to add to it. Thanks for reading.

I'm for Newnet personally. Nickserv, Chanserv, and I already have Arislan registered there, so my nick is set.

I very rarely have a problem with my nick, but it would be nice to move to get chanserv and nickserv.

I hope this goes through then.

So how will Sef and I impersonate each other? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Yeah, this sounds like a great idea, as I personally hate EFnet and its iffiness.

You will, and then get each other "ghosted". :>
There has been several great network suggestions too. It is just a matter of getting this through.

I, personally, endorse StormDancing, but I'd be good for any change that has a NS/CS.

Hey guys. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif We're currently working on the move over here in IRC but had some little mishaps going to Stormdancing, so please bear with us as we jump around for a more suitable server. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Arislan and Alielle have been hard at work to find us the best place to move to.

The outlook seems hella nice so far. We'll have nick registration, different types of operators and operator restrictions, and other cute things that'll make make our life easier than it was back on EFnet. We'll keep you updated!

Since there seems to be some question and confusions I thought I'd write an update.

Initially we followed Nohra's suggestion and settled in Stormdancing.net. All was well, service was exactly what we were looking for, except one downside: strict censorship to nickname and topic. In our case it simply just didn't work, not to mention majority of us disliked the fact that they scan through our topic quite regularly and will change it if they deem appropiate.

Hence the hunt to the next server. Arislan and I have found one that has full service, only thing they don't allow is child porn related content, which we never wanted to have anyway. Server is a decent size and not too big. So for now, we are settled in. Unless some freakish accident comes up this move should be final.

Sorry about the inconvinience and confusion. :>

Hey guys! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif The new server is called ForeverChat and Arislan is busy sorting out the last details with the site admins so that the java chat can get updated and point to the new place. In the meantime, there's still a few of us stationed back there at stinky ol' EFnet. mIRC and X-Chat users should move straight away to the new server. If it isn't listed, download the latest server file for your chat client.

While we're waiting for that, I'll go right ahead and explain a revamped version of the rules. No more shall newbies have to read through tons of pages of sub-sectioned drivel! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Instead, the rules are simply those:

House Rules: Be nice, be honest, type correctly, have fun. Don't be a pest. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Now, for the longer version:

Be Nice! Respect others just like others respect you. Keep your cool, keep your good humor, and I guarantee things will flow smoothly. If you have a question, it is considered good form to do some research on Google or the PSOW site and forums before using the chat.
Be Honest! We don't care about gender, orientation, religion or whatever. We don't need to see a persona; we want to see the real you. Don't be afraid of being yourself, buddy!
Type Correctly! The chat isn't a race. Though it may seem quick at times, don't worry - we'll still remember what you've said even if it was written five minutes ago. Take the time to properly write your sentences, with capitals and punctuation, and avoid netspeak and other contractions. Taking the time to properly type is a mark of respect to those you are chatting with.
Have Fun! We don't just talk about PSO; we talk about tons of other stuff! Games, computers, sports, the world, the newspaper, vacuums, anything at all, from the tiniest of subjects to the ultra-not-work-safe. Don't be afraid to join in the fun!
Don't be a Pest! Well, I think you understand by now. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

To add to Shuri's rules.

New server does support nick names over 9 characters, however, that doesn't mean you can abuse it and make up names that is 45345253 characters long.

Basically, if your regular nickname is longer than "Scejntjynahl", you better find a way shorten it up. If you come in with a nickname that is obviously too long for the sake of being too long. Well, don't say we didn't already warn you.

To put it simply, use the new services wisely. Abuse any of them you'll be banned, and reported to Opers.

Yes. The two posts above should be the new version of the link you just posted.

Do you want any of the old rules? Or do you want it to just show that those are added rules?

Don't be a Pest! No scripts, (eg. Music I'm listening to) and no colors. I think you understand by now.

Flush the old rules page entirely. What counts is all in this thread.

Forgive me for being a chat proggie n00b, but yeah a few questions.

I'm trying to get into the new chat server on the foreverchat.net server.

I type it in as a new channel tab and search for #psow from the channel list search, but 83 or so channels come up and none of which are #psow. I try to type it in directly and it says it isn't there either.

I don't have a clue how to add a new server to my list. I press the button on X-Chat to do so, but I don't know where to add the server name/info I need to put to reach the new #psow channel.

I asked a user in the EFNet channel, but he was using mIRC and had nothing he could answer on.

Anways, thanks in advance for any help on this matter. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Edit: "[ s ]"!
I found out to rename the server to "Foreverchat.net" just left click and wait- rather than right click, the "New server/6667" list name to "irc.foreverchat.net"

Aww yeah, figured out a simple problem on my own. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

If you want to find the channel via /list you will not find it. #psow is always set to +s so it will not show up on list. :>

That makes sense, since those other ones are pretty strange and thus must contain plenty of n00blets. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

The foreverchat.net site has (user)ratings for the current channel list too. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif
