I personally think SOAD's music is awesome. What is the PSO community's idea?

System of a Down is a wild bunch. They seemed to be getting a little too political for my tastes for a while there, but with their most recent album, they seem to have basically gone back to the kind of lunacy I've come to expect from them.

Lyrics are certainly not their strong point. They tend to sing the same words over and over, but this is contrasted by the observation that they eventually start singing them differently, which throws you off.

I think the thing that impresses me most about this group, is that their music is indeed quite angry, but still manages to be very melodic at the same time-- this is something that most "angry white boy" bands seem to completely fail at, but it's where System of a Down entirely succeeds.

In short, I approve of System.

Eh, they are not my cup of tea. There are one or two songs I like but as a whole, I'm not a fan. I'll stick with my traditional Rock 'n' Roll, thanks.

Personally, I don't care for that genre. And, yeah, the political commentary also detracts. But hey, if you like them, listen to them as much as you like. As for me, I shall stick with a bit less... rowdy music.

I've enjoyed my share of SOAD in the past, but they're not on my current playlist due to my ever-changing tastes.

But I am curious as to why some of you object to political commentary in music. If one may sing about love or people or places or all kinds of other things, why not sing about politics? I suppose I am not a huge fan of needless profanity or sex in lyrics, but is politics so offensive? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Or is it a desire to separate, at least to an extent, the concerns of the "real", day-to-day world from art? Hmm, I guess if one considers music to be an escape, then political blabbing could be annoying. On the other hand, many great works of art have a political aspect or motivation. Perhaps it is just mindless ranting against leader X or group Y we object to? Maybe what's objectionable is how it has become cool in some circles to listen to shallowly political music? Okay, well, I'm gonna stop rambling and admit it's probably a matter of personal taste rather than principle. Tiredness makes this lady write silly posts, huh? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif I would just delete this, because it is pointless, but I am too lazy to select it all. Ogod.

Oh, yeah, SOAD... as Meira said, their songs often have a nice melodic quality, but lots of shouting is an unpleasant thing to my ears. If I recall correctly, though, some of my favorites were "Metro", "Toxicity", "Chop Suey", and "I-E-A-I-A-I-O" (I frink think I got those titles right). Yeah...

SOAD music:

Emo guy singing sort of quietly. Music matches.

Sudden climax in music. Another emo guy is yelling out.

Repeat once more for each.

Screw mainstream.

Hell, Renee almost made my head explode.

If SOAD is emo, Britney Spears is industrial rock.

I don't think that a band that can be described as "Polka Metal" can be called mainstream. Their music is fresh, interesting, and insightful, and I don't mind a bit of political lyrics if they aren't all Rage Against the Machine angtsy.

I have, actually, gotten tired of listening to them (I have pretty much every song), but will defend them to the death. As of now, I'm enjoying NIN.

Fav. Songs: cuBERT, War, Sugar, Suite-Pee, Sad Statue, Cocaine, Cigaro... it would probably be easier to list the songs that I hate.

They are hit or miss.

They do some great work, but not all of it is for me.

Sometimes even within the same song I love parts, but hate others.

It's not so much the presence of politics per say, as much as the presence of overly critical, paranoid, anti-government politics. To me, personally, anything that complains about a government that allows its people to be the deciding factor in who gets what authorities and what sorts of laws should and shouldn't be put into place, very quickly loses its dignity to its self-victimness.

Well, they do sing about the people who vote as well. In my opinion, SOAD is teteering on the line between political statements and whining paranoia. I do see how that could be annoying, however.

You can sing all you want, but the people who get it understand already and are probably indifferent. The masses just like the tunes. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I personally don't like that band. It might just be cause the first song I heard from them annoyed the crap out of me. Now whenever I hear anything with a similar tune, I instinctively lunge at the off button of my radio. I remember leaving my radio on overnight, then in the middle of the night when one of their songs started playing, BOOM, I'm up with my hand on the off button.

I can see why some people don't like them, and as said, politics isn't what I want to hear about (Thank you Green Day..), but I like the tunes enough. If a song of theirs played in the night for me, Id hit the radio button too, but it'd be the Volume Up button http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Yea, I'd have to say they're one of those bands that you either hate, or like. And as for me, it wasn't the words that annoyed me, it was the way they sang them, and some of the tunes. It just seemed repetitive for me.

Can't say I like em. I did when they first came out but my tastes in music have changed since then.

My favorite song is Atwa.

It's hard and soft at the same time. And different times.

They've been overlooked by the media. But, if it came down to it, they would be the best of the best including worldwide.

For some reason I've had songs from Mezmerize stuck in my head recently.

So I've been listening to it, and I like it a lot more than I did the first time.

Secifically RadioVideo and Lost in hollywood.

Havent read much about what others put.

However, SOAD are kewl! Their best songs seems to be their shortest songs, lasting around a 1m 30sec, other than Violent Pornography, Radio/Video and the like.
