View Full Version : Your Comfort Is Another's Pain. Also, Nothing Makes Sense, d

"Modernity is fundamentally about order: about rationality and rationalization, creating order out of chaos. The assumption is that creating more rationality is conducive to creating more order, and that the more ordered a society is, the better it will function (the more rationally it will function). Because modernity is about the pursuit of ever-increasing levels of order, modern societies constantly are on guard against anything and everything labeled as "disorder," which might disrupt order. Thus modern societies rely on continually establishing a binary opposition between "order" and "disorder," so that they can assert the superiority of "order." But to do this, they have to have things that represent "disorder"--modern societies thus continually have to create/construct "disorder." In western culture, this disorder becomes "the other"--defined in relation to other binary oppositions. Thus anything non-white, non-male, non-heterosexual, non-hygienic, non-rational, (etc.) becomes part of "disorder," and has to be eliminated from the ordered, rational modern society."

I side with the people that scoff at English majors, people that refuse to comprehend, to pester those that would create outcasts of those that they do not understand.

Those that say "What will you do with an English major" are following postmodern philosophies of utility, and those that say "X minority is bad for Y reason" follow the tenets of moderninity. Or modernism, it's all very confusing. A lot of people I know say both, but swear that postmodernism is only for English majors like me.

Really.

My point is that we all have dual, triple, or whatever number nature - but realizing it is a journey that can only end at death, if ever.

Then, people get on my case for being depressing. Well, your optimism makes me want to gag. Sure, things look good for you now, but just wait until society gets on your case... wait until you're one of them. Oh, and watch when either gay marriage or abortion become legal.

People will stop lobbying, and society will pick a new target. Hey, guess what, those "liberals" won't care anymore, because they're satisfied and have blinded themselves to the pain of others. They'll soon become the new conservatives.

Then they'll look at someone like me, smile, and ask what I was going on about.

Another point: Remember Katrina? I really didn't care. Why? I feel the suffering of individuals worldwide - I am aware of quite a few similar situations. So, sorry, but I really didn't feel a thing for the people in New Orleans because I pity everyone, including myself.

Too bad that without society, we're fucked. Go away, anarchist. I guess that I'll just have to settle for a home made of shit, and pretend that it's made out of damn rainbows, or something.

I don't know if you agree with all that, but I that's all bull. Disorders and mistakes are essential to build a strong core of morals. You can't expect evolution without comebacks. It's ridiculous to idealize a society without any kind of adversity, since it is the key to becoming closer to perfection. Only in the ultimate state of perfection there can't be adversity. And modernism is far from perfect.

And about optimism, if you're saying your depression is justified, I can't tell you what to think. But I saw this movie that told the tale of an italian guy who got captured with his wife and son during World war II. The funny part about the movie, is that he never told his son "Son, we're at war, we're probably gonna be shot by nazis and there's nothing we can do about it." Instead he said that he was playing a game of hide and seek with the soldiers. And other facts from that, the man kept his chin up through the war and through the forced labour he was forced into. He found happiness while living a real hell. Is that naive? Or the true essence of optimism? Yeah, you've got your problems. Everybody else has. You're not gonna look any lower at your life just because you think yours are more serious, because there's always someone worse than you. And that someone isn't necessarily more depressive than you. Don't let the little things get in the way of what you truly represent by being alive.

I think I missed my point here, and I hope it connects with what you were trying to say. I'll get some shut-eye now. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

Of course my depression is silly. At the same time, I view that people's optimism is silly. Since we live in a world where the majority of decisions are stupid, everything that exists can be justified based on the common silliness of the world.

I may have disproved my previous points, but they can still stand, noting that nothing really makes sense. Or something.

someone has compassion fatigue! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

meh, sounds like you are more akin to the taoist view of the world. hmm, maybe less sublime, perhaps a bit more dadaist. does this ring true to you? "life is shit, the world is shit, everything is shit. now we just wanna shit in different colors."

negative, artistic, deconstructive, emotive, intuitive, critical manners of thinking has always been with humanity. they are a crucial part of the human experience and help provide a home to those who would normally not fit into the "norm." they are the finely tuned conscience exhausted with the world. hightened perception tired of short-sighted temporal fixation. this is an invaluable balancing point to the normal state of affairs. it guides and warns like a canary in a mine shaft when society is going down a bad road.

so, go have a warm glass of milk and soma, a good long nap, and recharge that emotional barrier. sounds like all the latent feedback is getting on your nerves.

I've seen you mention it before and I'll only comment on that part, since the others covered the rest quite well enough.

The part about being an English major.

Funny how you understand that you can do a multitude of things with that major, while they cannot see one use/occupation that uses it?

Off the top of my head,
(and sorry that they are more or less lower paying jobs, I tend to think about these kinda jobs first and foremost with my current situations and limitations)
newspaper journalist or editor, freelance journalist, novelist, English teacher(with subsequent teaching degree as well), and public speaker (both-community-local area-perhaps school district based and private company based.)

And those are just general ideas of occupations that I believe everyone knows of off the top of their head, even if they in fact do not. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Is there someone pressuring you to go into a different major, for whatever reasons and motivations?

Edit: Spelling/Grammar. See how often the world needs an editor? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
