Finishing Multiplayer

Anyone can explain me why it is impossible to save any progress on Multiplayer? (I mean levels)
Like, I defeat Dragon on Multiplayer but on Single Player (Or Multiplayer if I save and Exit) I can't acess Cave, that means I need to beat Dragon on Single Player... Any particular reason for that? :/

Or, in other words, it's a completely arbitrary decision on the part of Sonic Team. Only by unlocking areas in single-player games do you gain access to those areas in multiplayer games (though access to higher modes comes with leveling). It works the same for online. There's nothing to do but live with it.

Perhaps its to follow with the offline quests. Open each area individually and more offline quests could become available, depending if you are actually completing the offline quests simultaneously as you progress in the game. And since the offline quests are intended for single players that may explain why they chose not to allow multiplayer games be able to save opened areas.
