I know that there are pictures of the characters in the offline story mode (ethan etc.) but does anyone know of any sites that show pictures of what the characters can and will look like when you create them for online play?

There's some images of character creation at the bottom of this scan... http://www.jeux-france.com/Webmasters/Images/3056520050908_141827_0_big.jpg

Character creation is an online only thing, right?

Yeah from what I've heard. I don't mind the whole following a story in the offline mode, but I kind of enjoyed making characters. I guess I just feel like maybe it could be from your perspective, not the perspective of ethan.

Yeah, I'd enjoy making characters in offline mode too. But it's not only Ethan's point of view, you get to be different characters offline. And if you get online the story changes to your perspective. So if you get (over priced) online mode, you'll get your own perspective and your own char.

Ah yes but the bad thing between online and offline mode is is that you can't give ethan better weapons, item, and armor...vise versa as well. So that really sucks.

Character creation for online mode only is a good thing.

For one, voice acting for each and every character would end up being either redundant, stupid-sounding, or both. Not to mention the space it'd waste on separate voice tracks...

A predetermined character for offline mode also makes it so they can have the story more intimate, looking deeper into the main character himself, as well as how he relates to the supporting cast. Overall, it's a better RPG experience this way.

Although, wasn't it revealed at TGS or somesuch that you can select a 'Voice' for your online adventurers?

You know, so we can all run around grunting while we slash and stuff..

What would be great is if we could access a site or dl a video where we could practice customizing a character. At least have some minimal customizations so we get a feel for it. From what I can tell, its a PSO/EQII cross (adjusting eyes, jawlines, etc.). I LOVE IT! http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Has anyone found out exactly how many types of customizations we get per char?

Actually, if the character you play as is predetermined it's not an RPG anymore.

Your not RPing if your just playing someone else's story.
That would be called an Interactive-Story game - like FF2-FF10.

Playing as a chara you make and interacting with the game world and other players is RPing - Like how MMORPGs are or off/online PSO is.

So PSU is an online RPG, and an offline interactive-story-game. I don't care if offline isn't an RPG, it's still Phantasy Star, and it'll still kick ass. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Besides, for an RPG, PSU has online to make your own char.

I know what you mean, but it can also be an RPG, since you're playing the role of a given character.
I know I made RPs with friends like that, where the GM gives you a specific character not done by you and see how you act; it can be pretty fun (since you have to use your brain to adapt and not just systematicly use something you're used to), and PSU's offline mode is pretty much that, you RPing someone you were given instead of someone you created, since that's for online mode only.

"Interactive-story" game? And you're saying Final Fantasy was the only RPG in the series up until XI?

...Exactly what is it that you're smoking, anyway? By your logic, FFXI wasn't an RPG, either, as it actually has a set story that you progress through, as does PSO.

By the way, you might want to check what you define as role-playing. :/ You don't have to make up your own character to role-play; you can role-play the character someone else has made up... And if it's in a game, guess what? Role-Playing Game.

Role playing is putting yourself (the player) into the life & perspective of a character. It can be pre-made or of your own creation. You play the role of something not quite yourself in reality. Many games are misclassified as RPGs (Mario, Sonic, Zelda...sorry, Zelda is NOT an RPG). You play the role of someone, hence the term role playing. To say there were no rpgs in the FF series pre-XI...LOL, thats gonna cause MAJOR controversy, no matter WHERE you say it!
As for me, RPGs begin & end with the following:

1) D&D ('Nuff said)
2) Phantasy Star (my first official RPG)
3) Lord of the Rings (inspiration for countless lore, including D&D)

Zelda falls into the Adventure genre, but has RPG elements.

Nope. No RPG elements. I know, Im being a stickler. You are half right tho. Zelda is technically an adventure game. Always has been, probably always will be. I can see where ppl would say its an RPG but no. Purely an adventure game. How's this for irony tho? I have a trivia question. First one to get the correct answer gets a prize. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

What is the first VIDEO GAME RPG? Name the game & system it appeared on. (No computers, board games, etc.)

...It does have RPG elements in it, though. :/ Lots of non-RPG games do, nowadays.

Then, theyre not RPGs. An RPG is a pretty well defined, well figured out (usually), well recognized format. Most games dont fit that category (tho they try). Maybe thats the way most developers subconsciously admit that RPGs give the most play & replay value for the dollar, yen, etc & therefore, are the most fun to play. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

RPG player til I drop...
