View Full Version : This week's update.. [ New "World" movie / Grinding / "Acti

Well it's friday, so that can only mean one thing.. another charming little update on the official PSU website.

However! This week's update is quite interesting, even if one does lack that useful ability to read Japanese.

"World of Phantasy Star Universe" Movie!

Yep, there's a new movie online! (In the 'movie' section, bizarrely enough)

Actual movie link:

http://sega.jp/asx/pr/psu_pr2_bb.asx

which leads to the actual video at..

mms://dom.pod.tv/sega/free/pr/psu_pr2_bb.wmv (or)
mms://dca.pod.tv/sega/free/pr/psu_pr2_bb.wmv

Like most Sega videos to come from Japanese sites, the video is an absolute nightmare to get working, and just keeps screaming errors through WMP, so we'll all have to assume that it's absolutely delightful. If anyone can get this working, be sure to take captures or try and steal the stream!

I have, however, disected the Flash movie on the page, so here's the screenshots from that:

http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/6535/image22zz.jpg http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/9889/image31zf.jpg http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/5581/image49wq.jpg
http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/3825/image56cp.jpg http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/9258/image64os.jpg

Grinding

Grinding! +! It's back! It seems to have a similar purpose it did in PSO (making you stronger and stuff), but appears to take place at a counter. Also, notice that this 'grinding' procedure increases your PP points for that weapon. Hmm! Perhaps you have to find/salvage so many items for NPCs to actually do the upgrades? This would be an interesting idea if it then requires certain items to grind certain things, although I'm guessing the mono/di/tri grinder setup probably still exists. Although, with the inclusion of an NPC, perhaps a chance to fail exists? Who knows, translators, we need you!

http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/529/image26vm.jpg http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/9798/image38cd.jpg http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/8157/image62iz.jpg
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/685/image46cv.jpg http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4033/image73ak.jpg

[ Images taken from .SWF ]

"Action!"

http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/5258/ac15et.jpg
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4890/ac24mn.jpg
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/6991/ac37dq.jpg
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/5523/ac41tb.jpg

The 'Action' section appears to have given a 5 page overhaul, displaying the numerous types of weapon available - is that what I think it is? A bow and arrow? Oh my! There also appears to be some sort of Sniper Rifle looking arsenal (go-go FPS mode!), and miniature wands, which one would assume one-handed, allowing you to still weild something else. Perhaps this would be a viable way to have a 'decent' weapon on a Human type, and still be able to cast basic spells?

First-person mode also has a little update, showing Ethan targetting some bizarre gargoyle type creatures - hopefully this means that there are plenty of flying regular enemies, allowing for more specialised adventurers to exist (as in, Rangers can actually be Rangers, Beasts have this as a weakness if they can't use certain guns, etc). Perhaps the red target circle is meant to appear when you highlight a weak-spot?

It's all a bit too much.. So, until next week!

I'm glad to hear that theres some way to increase PP, I was afraid that we'd be screwed if we used some of our favorite weapons too long.

Oh man a bow AND a sniper rifle?! Those are like my two favorite weapons... http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Dang its like old school and new all wrapped up into one. This game seriously needs to come out NOW.

I don't have enough time to do a full tranlsation at the moment, but just skimming over the update, it says that there are over 20 different weapons categories. Among them are (going from top left to bottom right in that first picture) twin claw, shotgun, long bow, double saber, laser cannon, and spear. I'll look into the grinding section once I have more time.

Not to sound ungrateful, but they had damned well bring back slicers/boomerangs. Those have been a staple classic weapon of Phantasy Star ever since Phantasy Star II... and they've always been a partincular favorite of mine.

Though they weren't as useful in PSO, I'd like to see a more robust and powerful version of them. You know.. it'd be really nice to run up on a group of monsters - throw your boomerang, and then jump into the fray - attacking with the sword in your other hand. Then back off for a moment, catch your boomberage - toss it again, then jump back into the action.

Looking forward to the translations.

One of those guns reminds me exactly of the AR34 or the RCP-120 from Perfect Dark.......could it be? Automatic weapons? And I certinly hope the bow has some kick ass special effect. Like bleeding from the arrow and thus continuous damage. Nice report though.

PS: The sniper rifle better make a "sniper ish" sound not the usual "fwish" of gun fire. Something like "Boom!"

Glad to see there's so many more weapon types, they look a lot cooler too.

Is that assault rifle (or is it a smg?) an RA-14???

Thanks much for the report.

I find the large selection of (new) weapons interesting. There will be many types to choose from. We now have Bow & Spear. Yeah!
The Bow is definately a nice long-range addition. Spear is most likely a variation of the old partisan. Hm.. Photon Whip & Nunchaku? ;D

The first movie works for me. I'll try to pull some screen caps off of it when I get off work. Also, I'll put together a front page update by then. If anyone has any translations ready, I'd love to use them. I'll be sure to give you credit for your work.

It works for you? Great! Do spill information!

I've found out that the reason none of their things work for me is the charming UDP port blocking that exists on my router (for the MMS) - is it possible for anyone to download the stream? A tool like the old version of ASFrecorder that can nab MMS/ASX or Streamdown might be able to pinch it - it could be a worthy addition to the PSU section!

I was able to obtain a copy of it and plan on putting it up along with the front page story (when I get off work). It starts off by giving an overview of the Graal system. It then moves on to describe each of the planets. It features some nice music and the planet visuals are pretty good. There are a couple of very short segments of Ethan and Karen riding around on speeder bikes (think Star Wars).

The video isnt really a new one, its just the first part of the presentation's video of psu at the TGS. And you can download the presentation here (http://www.pso-world.com/downloads/psu/trailers/psu_tgs_bb.zip)

Hmm, perhaps the shotgun weapon in the upper-middle will replace the "shot"-type weapons in the previous PSO. I expected this because the spread of bullets was very wide/narrow depending on what you were shooting with a Shot in PSO, and probably woulden't translate well to the more open-ended targetting in PSU.

The beam-cannon below that will probably provide constant damage at the expense of PP.

A sniper rifle would be pretty cool, but mayhaps a bit overpowered. You'd be able to just pick off stuff from so far away that any melee classes woulden't stand a chance.

I don't know about the bow and arrow. It just kinda seems like a retro-ish rifle to me. Perhaps slower-firing and more powerful. Probably has cool photon arts.

I'm all for slicers, too. Those things were cool.

It'd be really cool if we could get a photon whip, which could be like a weaker, faster sword. Maybe get some 360-degree attacks and stuff.

It looks like there was also an update of the wallpaper selection in the Downloads section.

EDIT: I just noticed there seemed to some new information about COG too.

If it's true that there's 20 weapon types, then the picture showing off the weapons is only shows about half of them. Slicers are a series staple; don't worry, I'm sure they'll be there.

I'm not sure what the internal link is for the wallpaper, so you'll have to visit the "Downloads" section at phantasystaruniverse.com. Also, you can see the COG information in the "World" section.

Shotguns are indeed that -- Launcher-class weapons.

Really quick points before I go to the gym:
With handguns and long bows, you can aim for and shoot specific enemies. With proper aim, you can shoot at high places you can't hit with other weapons.

Other than that, and the 20-categories blurb, that's about it. Pages 2 thru 4 were there from a previous update.

Can anyone else not get the movie to load? O_o

On the grinders:
Looks like you buy them this time. And the kicker is, you can mis-grind something and actual render the weapon useless -- IE, you can't use it. Scary.

If you don't mind telling, how did you get information about a "launcher-class" and the aiming style of guns and bows? Any links would be much appreciated.

I've only seen lots of pictures, and haven't found any categorized or detailed listings of weapon classes and such. I'd go nuts over that kind of info.

I wonder if that little SMG-looking gun is PSU's replacement for mechguns? Or maybe they are just what mechguns look like in PSU. Mechguns were another one of my favorite weapon types, but I wonder how they would work in PSU? I can't imagine they'd work the same way as if you could just fire even one of them endlessly you'd be almost unstoppable.

There's some sort of a wierd basic-basic-basic-photon art-photon art-photon art combo thing going on, so I doubt you'll be able to run around with the button pressed while guzzling fluids.

We'll probably find a sort of burst-fire system going on in PSU like in PSO as far as mechguns are concerned.

This makes me refute my speculation of the beam-cannon thing being a continuous-fire thing. It'll probably be more like a cool particle-cannon thing that shoots rays, like PSO's Photon Launcher.

It's on the page. Launcher's/Shotguns, on the JPN side of things refer to class that have Arms, Meteor Smash, Final Impact, etc. It's apparent that's what they mean by the title of the category alone.

As for the "handguns and long bow shooting in high places", that's on page 5 of the Actions page (on the official site). And that's about all it says on the page.

EDIT: I'm more curious about what will be the characteristic that determines what items you can use. I've not read anything about hunters vs. rangers yet -- only races which decide your stats.

Ohh wow. I hadn't even thought of that... Perhaps all weapons will be open to anyone so long as they meet the required stat? And this time around maybe guns will do damage based on ATA, so while a melee may be able to use the gun, they wouldn't do nearly as well with it as a dedicated Gun-type character would.

I don't mean to sound rude but, THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN COFIRMED A LONG TIME AGO. Sorry again. But the ATA part sounds sketchy. It's been said that Cast are good with guns but that still leaves room for weapon damage to be calculated.

Nov 11, 2005, 08:11 PM
Okie... http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif I wasn't aware of that.

Its not that I minded the way the damage for guns worked in PSO, its just that when you think about it, it doesn't make much sense.

GaijinPUnch
Nov 11, 2005, 11:46 PM
Well... from the GC version on, character balance has been heavily weighted on ATA. (eg Episode II). Considering everyone should aim to max their ATA first, it doesn't really make sense for gun damage to be decided by ATA. Just my thoughts.

Shade-
Nov 11, 2005, 11:54 PM
My personal idea on weapon class avalability is something like this.

upon character creation you pick: race, gender, customization, proficent stats, deficent stats, and weapon class proficiency.

as in, you create your character, then you pick out what you are going to want to do with the character. If you want to be a "hunter" put proficency on ATP, and DEF or ATA, and deficency on MST. then for weapons, pick the basic and heavy direct attack weapons, and one or two gun types, and ignore the magic items. Take it as you will, that's probably not how it will work. I just think it would be a good, fairly ballanced system.

Dre_o
Nov 12, 2005, 12:20 AM
GHAAAA!!! IT GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS (THIS IS FROM WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR) CHOOSE YOUR WEAPONS(perhaps some weapons are restricted by race), STATS FOR DIFFERENT RACES SLIGHTLY DIFFER LIKE MST, ATA, ATP, (newmans have more mst, beast more atp, casts more ata)

Sorry for the rudeness again.

If I'm wrong, please hit me.)

That's kinda dissapointing though, if it implys that every beast character for any given level has the same base stats, I coulda sworn they said somewhere that you could determind your stat growth http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

It's cool. Even though it is a tiny bit off topic.....I believe that your stats will mold around the weapons you use and how often you use them. But hey, I've been wrong before.

OH YES! Bow and Arrow! FTW!

FTW!

...

That is all...

K, now for some actual comments now that I've looked at the rest.

It seems that laser type gun may be the facsimilie of the photon launchers. It seems to rest on your shoulder and fire a laser which could probably shoot through several enemies, just like photon launchers.

And it looks like the shot gun/spread needle is back, in its original style, its shoots a horizontal spread of needles. I know a few people and my self wanted those to fire more like a real shotgun, in all directions, but i suppose technology is far advanced in psu, heh.

And I suppose the bow and arrow will like create a photon beam as the arrow. I wonder how this would work? Maybe it will be the regular 2 button (weak, strong) setup, or maybe a one button, where teh longer you hold, the farther it goes?

uh ya

Oh, also, why are there so many spear designs? Perhaps they haven't finished the other weapon designs yet. We know there are 2 different kinds of swords, the regular shown there, and ethan crystal sword. Maybe there'll be several other variations of everything.

add to that the Double Saber and Partisten and Claw and Card and we're up to 18.... throw in the bow and arrow... and we're lookin at one more catagory we havent seen http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif This is assuming the other weapons in those screens are in existing catagories, the SMGish one being either a shot or a mechgun, depending on how it works, and the beam thingy to be a launcher.

That 20 catagory thing is a lot less impressive now. I'm actually hoping they eliminate some of the old ones or put them in the same catagory so we can get some more new stuff rather than a bow an arrow (which is freakin sweet, btw) and a mystery weapon.

we forgot katanas, didnt we? They were like sabers in psov1, but then they changed the animation. I bet they'll still be in there. Its like a tradition to have katanas in pso now.

And for axes, I don't think they'd really need to make a new set of moves. Its almost like a partisan with a different end.

That we did, but I really doubt that ST would once again make the Katana a seperate class, it would be silly. That "SMG-ish" looking weapon is undoubtably in the old "mechgun" category, except there is a difference between a SMG and a MG. So I'm assuming that we will now have katanas in the saber class and a new SMG class and a mechgun class. I've been playing quite a bit Socom 2 lately...

Also I wonder what different kinds of shots we'll get now. A shotgun gun at PSO range is obviously A LOT stronger than a rifle so hopefully that will be more realistic. Also hopefully we'll get something like a M3 12 gauge (er that's fully auto).

According to the scan on the front page, when you use the feature of the long bows (and handguns?) of shooting up in high places, you guide w/ the left-hand analogue stick. It's no longer in lock-on mode, but is a shot you can't make in "normal" attack mode.

Also on the scans that I didn't see on the page:
-For Grinding, there are many different shops that will do it, but you can only grind one weapon at one shop.

-Over 3 hours of event scenes (hopefully that's accumulated, and not in a row)

I'm still curious as to what is "failing" and "succeeding" in grinding... other than pure chance. I guess nobody will grind their really rare weapons. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

The bow will undoubtably be fun, hopefully since it obviously won't be 1 hit kill each time, hopefully it'll cause damage over time via bleeding effects. Kind of like the WoW skill.

I can't wait for the bow either. (Why didn't ST throw one of those babies into PSO? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif) I have no problem with a one hit kill as long as the shot landed in the monster's weak spot. Drop em like bricks! It would be really nice if the bows caused continuos damage. A bleeding effect would make them A LOT more useful. I just hope that you'll be able to see the arrow stuck in the target. Like shooting arrows into the walls and seeing them there...

Eh... as fast as enemies die in PSO I don't think theres much of a need for something like a "poison" effect.

I know EXACTLY where a bow would be useful. Think of Zelda: Windwaker. Some switches or such where theyd be high up & far away. Youd need a bow or a rifle to take em out. A measly handgun wont do the trick & a shotgun will probably miss completely. If Im right, I get credit for that knowledge, spammit. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Meh. While it would be cool I don't think they would, seeing as if the bow was a rare weapon what would you do if no one had one? Now it might be a different story if bows were a regular weapon class (saber, brand ect.[Actually it'd be kinda cool if they were http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif Then I'd be able to get my hands on them as soon as I start the game!]) but still I dunno if they'd make progression dependant on one weapon.

Meh I'm being rather pessimistic aren't I?

No, I agree. I like the idea, I would prefer it was used for certain parts of the game but not all. It would seem...different.

Oh man, I must say... that pic looks awesome.

Now, add the samurai hairstyle for FOmarl & you have my girl, Masako. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Oh yeah, & dye the hair purple. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif Ive been considering making her eyes purple as well, since we can now do that. With all these new possibilities, who knows what we can do with our chars?

Why couldn't you just get two katanas and dual-wield?

Unless you mean a katana-styled Double Saber?

OdinTyler

Agreed. With dual wielding widespread, theres no point to find dual weps when you can just use any 2 weps you like. If you want to dual wield sabers or katana, go ahead. Nothing stopping ya (that we know of). Ive always built my FOmarl to be somewhat samurai like. Ill be doing that style for sure. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Oh yeah I'd forgotten the fact that we can dual wield in the game >< I might just go Samurai with my character if I can get my hands on a katana or two http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I was speaking hypothetically. Also, theres no actual test for what possible changes there are. All thats been mentioned are the categories. I want to actually test it out tho. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I know, that was sarcasm...

I wish there was too. If only they made a character generator so we could pick what we want before PSU comes out. It would be like a board maker on skating website but for PSU characters.

Yeah, I really hope they give us a character maker or something before the game comes out.

Ohh, how about when they give us a solid US release date, they offer it as a pre-order bonus? I love ideas that will probably never actually happen.

What would be the point of giving us a character maker with the game...we could just create our character on the game instead of spending time on something else to pick out what we like.

nonono. I mean, when you go into Gamestop, and say "I'd like to reserve Phantasy Star Universe for the PS2/PC (whatever)." and they will say "Alright I just need you to fill this out" "Ok, all set. We'll call you when it's in, and here is your bonus Character Creation demo disk. Have a nice day!"

That's...interesting. It's not probable, but not impossible. I wouldn't mind. I just wouldn't be pre-ordering it. When you pre-order is the game at the store the exact day of release or does it take awhile for shipping? When a new game comes out it's at the store and buyable from the second they open.

I'd rather have an actual demo, yes with CC, but also atleast a single level to try.

Shade-
Nov 15, 2005, 09:26 PM
Well, I'm talking pre-ordering at the store, so they usually tell you the day before they have it, and say you can come in anytime tomorrow after 12:00 and pick it up. (or whatever time they will have it unpacked) My gamestop usually says after 12:00. If you order it off the internet, then you have to wait/pay for shipping, and on top of that, I've never heard of an online store that had bonus pre-order stuff. I wouldn't say its all that unlikely, as lots of big releases have started doing that recently, weather it's a poster, or mousepad, or tee-shirt, or an artbook, or anything like that.

My dad got a watch from pre-ordering Resident Evil Outbreak or something. My local Gamecrazy is less than 2 miles away so I'm going to walk there early to get it. If I pre-order at the store and pick the pre-order it and pick it up at the store an leave option thing that means whenever the store opens I can just pick it up the day it comes out right?

I also want a demo with even just 1 level. That would be more than good enough.

yeah, if you pre-order, you just go in the day it's out and you can pick up your reserved copy.

lol, I guess i was under the impression that was common knowledge. I'm not positive about gamecrazy, but Gamestop only needs $5 down on the game. You have to pay the difference later, but its a good system anyway.
