So how many people here are real addicts of Phantasy Star anyways? Yea, the game is cool and all, but it's mostly an online rpg and nostalgic reminder for many of us that the Phantasy Star series is over.

I just wanted to ask what everyone felt about it. Sega using the name for its online rpg. Remember, the game was planned as an online rpg first. Then, it was decided to base it on the Phantasy Star world.

I myself am happy about having a great online rpg, but I am also totally disappointed in the fact that Sega decided to tease me with the possibility of the story continuing from Generations of Doom or from End of the Millenium.

Not at all. I'm happy they chose the Phantasy Star universe. It's Phantasy, damnit, not Fantasy http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif That means nano instead of 'I wanna cast magic missile', Vulcan instead of 'A Broad Sword +2 vs people who develop too many fantasy RPGs'.

It's a touch refreshing, and given how successfull it is, gives hope for PSO2, and perhaps, PS5, don'tcha think?

PS5 yea I hope. Or even a PS 3.5!

I just hope either Sega does something about this series instead of just turning it into a story-less online rpg. I bet a lot of players here don't even know the story behind Phantasy Star, let alone Alis, Tyler, Lutz, Laya, Siren, or Aron.

I think Tyler would have been an extremely cool character to join the team in PS2.

To my recolection, ps4, in a time line, came before 3. PSO, from all information given, takes place after 3, thus being the latest in a time line.

I played PS2, PS3, and PS4( long time ago). Man, I just remember Nei.....how come you guys still remember all these PS things?? You guys still playing PS?? I just got a Smash Pack, might play PS2 later.

From my own opinion, PS2 is the best among PS series. What you think??

Phantasy Star II is my favorite too. Man I loved that game! Phantasy Star IV rocked as well. It seems to me that PSO is actually one of the ships from the Palma party in PS3. At least thats how I look at it. Long live all Phantasy Star fans!

bah, PS1 was by far the best.... It was the longest and most challenging.... Those 3 dungeon views rocked.... It was also the first game I can remember that had a battery in it...

It's funny how when the game first came out EVERYONE was praising it. Now that it's been out and most of us have beaten the game inside out, I'd say about 90% of us are picking the game apart! Yes I have played ALL the Phantasy Stars and I agree that probably most people playing PSO have no clue as to what a Numan really is or a clue to anything else in the universe of Algol. They probably dont know what Algol is! LOL Yes I also think it's sad that Sega decided to use the Phantasy Star name for this game. The ONLY thing Phantasy about PSO is the music, (they used part of 2's opening theme) and the Numans! Not much else is there. Sega is focusing too much on the "EXTRAS' and not enough on the meat and potatoes of games. While I do agree that online gaming is a PART of the future of gaming it is not the entirty.

Sega wasnt conserened with the story because they think none of us care about that anymore! Well day by day more and more PSO players, including ones who have never played any other PS games are complaining about a weak offline mode and a lame weak story! How ironic! LOL It's hard to say whether or not Sega will put a story into PSO 2 since the game has been in production for a while . If it were Phantasy Star V then it'd be a givin but it's PSO 2 so we can only cross our fingers!

Ask anyone under 19 oe 20 who Alis, or Myau was, or even Rolf for that matter and a good percentage wont even know your talking Phantasy Star! It's good to see these younger players ripping Sega though, for the lack of story and what not! Heheheh hopefully Sega listens to fans unlike that other company...you know the one making Metorid into a FPS! LOL http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

I never really liked 3d dungeons too much. =T But anyways, as far as most people consider it, ps4 takes place at the same time as ps3. Both indicate it is 1000 years after palm was destroyed (ps2).

In ps3, it was referred to when Orakio and Laya trapped DF on a ship finally as they were leaving Palm. In ps4, it was referred to when you learned about that 4th planet, forgot the name. You were told it was (currently, in ps4) the next following time that DF is trying to get out, and that the seal (Algo) is now at its weakest state (missing Palm).

Please please ps5!

I actually just got on EBay and bought the original carts of Phantasy Star 2 and 4. They're not here yet though. I can't wait to break out my Genesis again and relive those great memories of my youth. The Sonic games, Vectorman, Altered Beast. Wow, I can't wait for the Smash Pak to be released without the console,. March seems so far away...............

Cool, man, I've tried getting the cartridges on E-bay as well, but I keep getting overbid. Once, I was outbid exactly a minute (?!?) before it was mine! Man....

As for the timeline, I'd say PSO is between 1 and 2. As I keep insisting, these are Earth Men, we are playing as before they are corrupted by a certain Dark Phallus. The Ruins are from Algol if you look at the evidence shown on the offline sealed door. Possibly from Ryukross than the other three.

Yes, I know about having meseta and the Naula Cake Shop, but those seem to be fan service, when compared to the other parts of the (incomplete) story.

It has to have taken place after PS4.

Nei was the first Newman but died, then 1000s later Rika was created and she was the only Newman. It has to have taken alot of time for Rika to spawn the beginnings of an entire race to the point where they are commonplace.

I want to see a ps5 where Palma is reformed using some higher scientific methods.

And Motavia needs to become a desert again where E.farmers rule the sands =)

Hmmmm hard to say when the game is taking place????? If we are playing the Earthmen then why are there Numan's all over the place! LOL hmmmm Rykros? Possilbe but unlikely in my opinion. If it's Palma and it's between 1 and 2 there would still be a big population there, Ivory towers and what not. Hard to say. I dont think the designers know either or care because if they did we would have had a much richer story and a decent ending. (you call THAT an Epilouge?)

Just to counterpoint, isn't it strange how NeiFirst was taking part so unknowingly in Mother Brain's goals of destroying the people of Algol. I hardly think she was an accident at all.

Plus, if the Numans were a result from Earth technology that the like everything else from PS2 and on, it fits where I put PSO between 1 and 2 just fine. After all, the Numans may be a new thing to the Algolians. But not necessarily to the Earth men, the same can be said of the androids in PSO.

The game does not say these people were Algolians....only that home worlds were destroyed. And by that time, Mars could be a home world. If they were Algolians, why would Rico and the rest be so clueless of the Dark Falz...that is supposed to be utterly destroyed by the end of PS4 by Chaz and company?

As for Ragol itself, it is not in the Algol system at all. It has no association with it other than a space ship from Algol depositied and buried itself under Ragol's surface. And I know there is not much story in this game, but do you guys read any of it? Seriously, it is easy to miss, but it's there.

Hmmm... few nitpicks.

On the PS3 and PS4 simultaneous issue. Well, it's debatable. You see, in the original Japanese version the Laya/Orakio war took place 1000 years after the world ship left Palm. And PS3 occurs 1000 years after the L/O war. That places PS3 1000 years after PS4, and 2000 after PS2. However, when they translated(or butchered, depending on your opinion ^_-) it they 'modified' the timeline... placing the Laya Orakio war simultaneous with the destruction of Palm, leaving PS3 at the same point in time as PS4.

And as for a proliferation of Numans... Since they're a genetically engineered species, all you would need is a copy of the 'genetic code' and you could mass produce numans... I forgot which quest it was during, but during one a numan in town said something about Numan's artificial origins, which definitely leaves the 'Numan genetic structure taken with people who left Palm' option wide open... So, as far as PS4 Motavia or PS3 worldships, the numan presence doesn't really imply PSO is directly connected to either...

Good point there! I didnt think about it like that. But if it's Palma where is everyone else? Obviously it's possibly in Algol, because of Rappy's and the like but it beign Rykross I dont think is possible. Rykross I dont think has ever been any different that it appeard in 4. Who knows really though. It's a tough call. I was just hoping to see some Musk Cats.

Dont you think Numans are products of Musk Cat and Human cells anyway? That's what I've always thought

Yeah, the translation practically makes sorting all the 'facts' even more confusing. It actually splits the story and timeline for the Japanese and U.S. versions in two! But I tend to lean towards the Japanese timeline since that was what was intended to happen as opposed to Sega of America's attitude of, "Let's change this, this, and this, because we are lazy and don't want to program this cartridge too much to get it right. Nobody's gonna' notice 10 years from now, right?" ....heh.

To even further back up Skee-

These are NEWmans.. not Numans- Palman society created Numans.. Not NEWmans(I know it sounds dumb.. but... Hey its some form of justification). Genetic Engineering could have brought about the race of NEWmans.

The Androids look nothing like those in the other PS games...You know Wren looks like A machine with a Human Face- along with Demi.. All of their faces look much more Human. However in this game everything is So Mecha- Its Crazy.

Forces- In other PS games.. the main "Magic" users were called Espers- and had special magic techniques that were appropriate..Forces on the other hand are just Technique masters.

In another game of the series- Techniques were called "Mans mundane solution to Magic".
Could it be that Techniques actually arrived (in Algo) As earthmen's attempt to study the Ethereal?

Just a few thoughts- Christ if we all knew how to program a game- I"m sure We'd make PS up to #21.. The Final Showdown- Between the Earthmen and Palmans.

This Story is sooo great- its almost as good as the Aberrant Storyline!

(Rubs his eyes and nose together) I'm beginning to think that Zork I and Super Mario Brothers had a less ambigious (crystal clear) plot.

As for Palma, it blows up. Everyone is dead, there. Even La Shiec (Lassic/Lashiec/Whatever), even if he's undead. Now don't get me wrong. I miss Camineet. I miss Baya Malay. I miss the Spaceport. I miss that one city that looks like it's propped on a giant oilrig. I miss the green, green grass and the blue, blue skies. I even miss Hapsby. I don't miss those eggshells for houses, but I digress. My point? RAGOL SURE AS $!@# AIN'T PALMA!!

My god, man. Sega's webpage says Ragol is in the Rris Sector. And the solar system its in has more than just four planets. One of which is a ringed gas giant!

Oh, my other point is I miss Palma too. Yeah. (Heh, I'm stressin')

Someone has to sit down and graph out the timeline. This is too confusing. I think, personally, the "timeline" is in this order...

PS1, PS4, PS2, PS3, PSO.

The only "history" included in PS4 is all tied in with PS1, which is why I believe it happened before any of the other games.

I have to go back and play the games to try and figure them out exactly but I think PS3 really messed up the whole series. That was a crappy game!

It almost seems to me that PSO is trying to be like PS2 more than other incarnation. The only thing missing from PSO is the Escapipe =)

IMO PS4 was the best in series. Had a strong story line and paid critical attention to PS1's history.

Welp, being the great dissenter, I'd say

PS1 and PSO at roughly the same time, give or take a hundred years, PS2, PS4, and PS3.

Personally, I still want PS5 more than PSO2. From an interview from long ago, a successor of Lutz was going to actually (AND CLEARLY) leave the Algol system along with someone named "Neta" who learns he/she/it is a follower of the Great Light. And supposedly the good guys kick the Bright Guy's butt in terms of thanks for dumping its garbage on Algol. Let's see, here's the link :

http://home.att.net/~RACapowski/PS/comtrans.htm

It's somewhere in the middle of this document, just search for "Great Light"
