View Full Version : PSO-World.com Has a New Home (bug reports go here)!

Tomeeboy
Dec 7, 2005, 11:39 PM
As most you already know by now, we just moved servers this evening. PSO World is now permanently hosted under it's own domain (pso-world.com, duh)! Most of our links and images should be working properly, and anything that tries to access an old planetdreamcast.com or dynamic.gamespy.com URL should work soon. If you happen to come across something that appears to be malfunctioning, please let us know by posting in this thread. Thanks for your patience and support while we continue to improve PSO-World.com!

Double? the advertising space at the top of the screen, and also those pop-ups are very annoying. Despite this, getting your own server is good news.

At the moment, recursive linking on the old planetdreamcast and dynamic.gamespy.com URLs is NOT working. This means that trying to access a file or page using one of the old, non pso-world.com, links will result in redirection to the front page. I'm told this issue should be fixed sometime tonight or tomorrow afternoon at the latest.

Actually the message is still there, it is just below the red background. Since the dialog box cannot be resized, you don't see PM text.

Hm.... I'm not sure how that would be happening. How did you get in the forum to post if it's redirecting you to the main page every time? I'd clear temporary internet files, just in case your browser has somehow managed to cache the old forum index (from the previous server). However, even if you are somehow getting old links, the problem with those redirecting to the main page has been fixed.

If I have to see ads, I'm either going to want a little bit more content (see porn), or I'm going to want them to start advertising my own site, since nobody is going to be paying attention to these ads anyway. It's going from taking a relative advert free site to the beginnings of a pay site. Are new members going to have to give their credit card numbers to start viewing the content here? And again, if that's the direction the site is taking, where are the naked chicks outside of PST episode 11?

In short, I understand the need for the ads if you are having to pay the fee for your own server now (if you guys weren't doing so before, that is.), but full page advertisements are an interruption to the accustomed flow that the long time members have formed here. It's taking a wonderful free thinking (although heavily censored in a certain point of view, considering at least one moderator does everything he can to piss people off, and by his own profile, hasn't played a PSO game since Version 1 on the dreamcast) site and making it into something that screams PROFIT. It isn't the desired way you want to go.

Before the site change, there were still ads on top of the pages. They weren't full page ads, although for a time, some of them were still resetting the pages during posts, which helped to piss some people off. If PSOworld was somehow able to attract a larger current user base, wouldn't those types of ads help pay for the new server space without the full page ones, perhaps on another pay per click base? I'm sure we can figure something out to make the site, and the commmunity here more accepting towards outsiders, and even attract the older members who aren't banned back in. It wouldn't be difficult to do so.

Right now, PSOworld is almost in a state of decay. The games are old news, and not attracting the numbers of new members that they used to. The regular members in the forums are recluses, and don't accept new members easily, and the staff is the same way, only worse, because they have the ability to make changes. It's not a healthy environment. Hell, the staff not only goes out of their way to make new members feel uncomfortable, they work diligently at making long standing members uncomfortable, as well.

Also, it would be nice if the staff not take all credit for the content at the site. I am well aware of a number of contributors who worked hard for what they found, submitted it to the site, and the site promptly gave credit to the staff for the finding.

Not good. Poor form.

In essence, there is a mountain of detail that could be worked on here to make the place a more all inclusive, non-threatening environment. More interesting content could easily be added by the talented members of the site (I'm specifying talented members, not talented staff) which would assist in gathering a larger audience for the site. The full page ads could be done away with in favor of smaller ads on top of the pages with an existing pay per click program which would help pay the bill for the server space.

If you have any questions about my suggestions, feel free to PM me.

To anyone having problems with the full-page advertisements, could you answer the following questions?
-What browser are you using?
-Do you have cookies turned on?
-Were you logged in when you got consecutive ads?

Also, to set the record straight, Gamespy is still hosting PSOWorld. We were transferred from PlanetDreamcast to their new hosting server.

The full-page advertisements came as a surprise to all of us. Gamespy's new server automatically inserts the advertisement code into the site's code. We don't have any control over it. Tomeeboy is seeing what can be done about removing or reducing the volume the full-page ads. I don't think anyone likes them. Still, you have to understand there will be some ads (such as the one at the top) since Gamespy is trying to make some money off hosting the site. Please try to be patient as we try to work out some of the problems that happened because of the move.

We don't have any intention of ever turning this into a pay-site.

Trypticon, the site has actually been increasing in users and traffic steadily and we've been working diligently trying to make it more welcoming for new users (by doing things such as improving the registration page, which was previously very confusing).

To confirm what Ryna said, we're 100% against the full page ads. Believe me, they are annoying us as much as they are annoying some of you, as we even get them while trying to do work on the site using our back-end scripts. We have no intention of turning into a pay-site, but that does not mean we won't have some ads (such as the ones at the top of every page). However, the current behavior of the full page ads isn't acceptable and we are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. As the big red bar at the top of every page states, please bear with us while we try to work out some remaining bugs. We haven't been on the new server for even a week yet, so I think it's a bit early to be making wreckless assumptions.

trypticon
Dec 11, 2005, 05:00 PM
Not making reckless assumptions, just observations. Considering that all of this is just reckless assumption is just that, a reckless assumption that you are guilty of making, yourself.

The staff here needs to be made over again. I have recently learned of two demodifications, and at least one of them was well deserved. Problem is, there are still a few in need of demodification, and it's almost alarming that their behavior seems to go unchecked.

Again, taking credit for other people's work is dishonorable, and that has happened here. From what I see, there has been no correction thus far to the claims that have been made. But then, the site would lose some credibility if those corrections were made, and noticed.

Again, the site deserves some changes, enough to make the atmosphere friendly again, which is clearly is not anymore, and that goes for more than just my viewpoint. I get complaints about things here daily from a number of parties. I don't know why the complaints are made to me, as it isn't like I can do anything about them. But to go as far as use a line from popular media 'to protect the site from devestation', I am simply standing for changes that are being called upon by the viewers here.

But then, if it's not what you want to read, I don't expect you to. Just as the advice so many people give, if you don't like it, don't go there.

Ryna
Dec 11, 2005, 05:10 PM
The site staff works very hard to give people their due credit. Sometimes we may miss something. If you feel there has been a grievous error, send me a PM and we'll discuss it there. This thread is about discussing problems related to the Site Move.

Tomeeboy
Dec 11, 2005, 05:29 PM
I would not recommend any further attacks on the staff. If you have a problem with a staff member or how something is done on the site, I'm always open to discussing things via PM. However, this thread is not an outlet for public accusations or berating. These people dedicate their free time to keep this site running and it would not be here at all if it weren't for them. I am 100% for improving the site and community, but there is a way to do so without being disrespectful to those who will ultimately be taking on the task of making those improvements.

Let's get this thread back on topic so that we can concentrate on resolving issues relating to the recent server move. The sooner we get everything working corrently on the new server, the sooner we can get back to work on other things.

People who are mad about the full page ads are cracked. Is the extra 2 seconds it takes you to click "Continue to PSO World" really that big of deal?
PSO World needs the extra money that they can get from these ads. I would rather have these ads than than have a lousy PSO World.

Just to clarify something... The ads belong to Gamespy and we do not generate any revenue from them.

The biggest problem we are seeing right now is that some users (and staff) are receiving multiple consecutive ads, meaning that clicking the 'continue' link at the top of one ad just takes them to another. This is definitely not how the ads are supposed to function, and is a problem we are trying to get fixed immediately.

Heh.. sorry about that http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif We had to find a way to get the message to show up on every page without having to manually edit every theme, and that was one of the side effects. I'll probably be taking that message down sometime in the next day or two, as we expect to have the remaining bugs worked out very soon. In the meantime, a temporary trick to get your PM link is to just highlight the text that pops up in the box and drag the cursor down.

Edit: You know what, scratch that. I came up with a little workaround that solves the problem http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif PM windows should be greeting-free now.
