Exp on multimode or online

Ok my firends and I had a theory that u needed to at least hit an enemy to gain exp, but the other day all enemies in a room were eliminated so I went to a corner to recharge life and suddenly I recieved a level up. So, my question is, do u need to hit enemies to gan exp? Or simply be in the team? Or do u need to be in the room to gain the exp? Please answer me ASAP, thanx.

Yes, you must hit the enemies to gain EXP.

you must at least hit the enemy (doesn't matter if you miss it) to gain exp. to one who kills it gets the most, right?
(dunno exactly, haven't played multi-mode for a while)
