View Full Version : Computer Organization!

PJ
Feb 4, 2006, 06:44 PM
Since I was bored (And not wanting to do Math), I decided to organize and clean out some files on my computer!

Basically, I put things in Folders, and named Folders, and given them pictures (I especially like my Music Folders)

My Documents (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v370/PJ_SC/Random/Myjunk.jpg)
My Pictures (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v370/PJ_SC/Random/Randompictures.jpg) (Obviously there are more pictures, those are just the folders, the rest of them are el random)
My Music (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v370/PJ_SC/Random/Musicelcoolio.jpg)
My Videos (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v370/PJ_SC/Random/Funkyvideos.jpg)

So now, curiosity of mine asks how others organize their main folders (Since if I asked for all folders, it'd be a... well, a lot of folders for some people to cover, I actually don't have that much)

Being obsessive/compulsive about organization, my PC is organized and tidy all the time. Files go where they're supposed to and are all named appropriately and organized by filetype in "Details" view. It's not flashy, but it's clean and easy to navigate and find everything I need.

I got folders called "Stuff", "Musak", "PSO Stuff" and "Azerus". All on my desktop.

Stuff contains setup files and zips/rars, random videos and stuff that I'll download, watch once and never again. As well as random text documents and homework assignments.

Musak contains music, no order, I just throw everything in there, sometimes I ranomly put stuff in assigned folders, and one day all my music will be sorted!

PSO Stuff is my...PSO stuff, anything I write down for PSO I throw in there, as well as "other" programs for it. >.>; Oh, and my PSOproxy is in there.

Azerus, bittorrent, enough said, right?

I don't use anything in My Documents except the Picture folder, where I keep my pictures. Usually for people's art that I save I have more than one piece saved from them, so I have folders for specific artists and such. I should actually get around to sorting my pictures sometime soon, I've kind of stopped putting them in specific folders, and just threw them right into the folder >_>;

My Videos and My Music...I dunno why I never used them, my friends sometimes throw stuff in there when they use my computer, so I guess that means hands off for me http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Desktop icons suck. Waste of space and if you're using a wallpaper (which I don't) it just uglies it up even more. Everything I need to access can be done so with the quicklaunch bar using 5 icons for my main programs and all other programs behind the > beside the last icon.

Damn, you killed my day. I was feeling pretty good up until I found out I was stupid for having a clean desktop and named folders for quick and easy access to my computer stuff. I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now :/.

My most important folders:

Digital Photos > organized by month and year (Dec 05, Jan 06, etc)

Music > organized by various means--for example, "Acapellas and Instrumentals", "Mashups", "MP3s", "OGGs", "To be organized"...

Photoshop > also divided into folders based on month and year

How interesting, wouldn't you say?
Also, no pictures on the folders. Eww. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I'm not very organized, yet I can find what I need.

I have several "junk" folders, which I just throw all recent files into and every 3-4 months, I make a new one. Every 6 months or so, I clean a few of them out.

Ah, organization... This is something that my computer lacks, desperately.

Over the last 15 years or so, I have adeptly accumulated files. On occasion, I have lost a great deal of media or writings, but remnants from here and there continually exist. Every time I have made a significant change, the collection of folders that I work out of has altered. On a few occasions, I have seen fit to return to previous folders.

The end result is chaos. Periodically, I explore my hard drive, and I am obligated to ask myself, "Where the hell did this come from?" Sometimes, I honestly don't know.

Currently, I am fairly organized, or at least in some matters. I've worked out a system for keeping track of contests, stuff to post in the Fan Art Gallery, etc, etc.

At work we've got it all worked out, though. We're a Civil Engineering firm, and as such, we've got a number of projects going on at any given time, and each project has a large number of drawing files that have to be kept track of, along with records of communication, etc, etc.

It starts with a folder named "PROJ" on a network hard drive. Under P:PROJ, we have a great number of folders, each one the number of a project. Project numbers are assigned to a project according to year, and how many projects they have had previously. The first two numbers are the last two digits of the year (ie, 06), the last three numbers are given sequentially. The thirty-eighth project started this year, for example, will be 06038. So, under P:

Im sorta organized. >>

All Artwork is sorted through 3 folders

Scribble
Digital
Traditional

Then they are split by month.

Music is split by album and by artist.

For example
System of a Down - > Mesmerize - > Song.mp3 whathave you.

Everything else is all scattered XD

I'm rather organized. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

On my desktop, I only have two folders: Utilities (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/1.gif) and Games (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/2.gif). Pretty self explanatory, I think.

Now on to folders containing actual files!

My Documents (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/documents.gif): Contains basically all of my other subfolders, as well as text files. Also, inexplicably, a folder called "My Games" which contains Halo stuff. o_O;

My Music (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/music.gif): Contains all of my music. I have iTunes organize/consolidate my library. It's very convienient. The organization order goes from Artist, Album, and then to individual songs. The text files are old playlists that I don't use anymore, but for some reason, I decided to keep a record of. CD-Cut is one of the mix CDs Shurikane sends me. I haven't listened to this one yet. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif The other random MP3s are unsorted stuff, like those songs by The Doors that my friend sent me, and that Editors b-side.

My Pictures (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/pictures.gif): Contains all of my images. It has some specific folders, and anything not in a folder is something I couldn't find a place for otherwise.

My Videos (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Eihwaz0/videos.gif): Contains video clips and movies. Probably my least organized folder. I don't have many videos, so I don't have a strong need to sort them in sub-folders.

Here's some pictures of my great organization. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

My Desktop:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/desktop.jpg

This is the first hint that I really need some better organization. And to think I just cleaned it up yesterday. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

My Documents:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/mydocuments.jpg

I have no idea what half the files in that folder even do anymore. But they may be important to me some day so I let them stick around.

My Pictures:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/mypictures.jpg

This has SOME organization, but there's still files all over the place. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Hard Drives:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/freespace.jpg

Not much free space left. Lots and lots of junk.

My C Drive:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/Cdrive.jpg

I think I have too many games I never play anymore installed. >.>;;

My F Drive:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/fdrive.jpg

I backed up alot of my C drive onto here, but never bothered to put most of it back where it belongs.

The Real Mess:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Eanae/PC%20Layout/therealmess.jpg

Yes, that's 900 meg of txt files, and a few exe's here and there. I get lost working in that folder all the time. (That's not even the full folder, there's about 500-600 meg more of it lieing around somewhere. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif)

My computer is organized... somewhat. It's a hodgepodge of several organization attempts which failed either due to computer crashes over the years or pure apathy. For instance, I have three versions of Windows installed on my computer. Win2k on my C:, Win2kPro on my D:, and WinXP on C: - which I'm currently using.

When my PC crashes, I tend to just pop out my HDD's and place them in a new fixed system. Then clump everything together into a folder called "Old C: Drive" so that I can go through and recover data at a later date. I rarely ever do though...

Ocassionally I'll get a bug up my ass and move some stuff around and delete old folders which are empty now that their contents have been removed - however it's still very much a layer upon layer of past organziations. Digging through my PC's HDD's is very much reminicent of being an archeologist on some washed out pleatu studying the layers of sedimentary rock to discover clues at to what life was like in each ancient time period. If you dig far enough, I shit you not, you'll most likely find reminants of an old DOS 5.0 OS I had installed back in 91' and some files I haven't seen since I downloaded them on the local BBS's. Old stories, Ganja Digests, Hexen Demos, Legend of the Red Dragon chatlogs.... crazy ancient stuff.

As for my desktop - it's generally cluttered. I have FireFox download everything to my DeskTop, and I only clean it off once I get about three to four rows of icons. I'll take of a picture of it...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/Sinue/3bd007f1.jpg

As you can see... I tend to keep my task bar exceedingly clean. I only have two things in it... Zone Alarm (due to not having a good router), My Anti-Virus, and Sound Volume. On my quick select, I have WMP, FF, Music Match, and Desktop. Though the files are a problem. My taxes are there so I don't forget to print them out later (I need to take them to my moms, I don't have a printer here), a bunch of PSU screenshots which will eventually get transfered to the "Phantasy Star Stuff" folder, some Hellsing previews which will probably get stuck in Desktop Junk (which is basically just an extension of the odds & ends from the desktop), ect, ect.

I also have several "hidden" folders scattered in various places on my PC which contain pr0n and other "sensitive" materials. I like to hide them in other program files... like make a hidden folder in C:Old C DriveProgram FilesATI MultimediaTVSDL. "SDL" being a hidden folder of my own creation (named to look inconspicuous). A good search will still turn some stuff up so long as the the searcher is smart enough to enable "Show Hidden Files".. but it's safe from the casual browser and general PC inept. Used to do it all the time at work to hide my games and downloaded MP3s from IT Steve. (BTW: That was just an example, I don't have anything hid there for the moment)

Just about everything I use in day-to-day work/study here. You may notice the little button on the taskbar, between the IME and the system tray; it's a menu that brings up all my games.

Basically, I can get pretty much anywhere I need to be on my computer, in a couple seconds.

And yes, I know the theme and wallpaper clash. I needed a change, and this was the best I could find. :/
