I've always been really big on this game called Earthbound, ever since the first time I rented it from the local videostore back in '95. It's always stood out from other games in it's own weird and quirky way. I confess that to this day, it remains my absolute favorite game. I actually still play it from time to time. It puts a smile on my face and somehow never gets old.. I love it to death. I'm not sure if anybody else here liked Earthbound, but I thought I'd inform those of you who are interested that a sequel is coming, incase you don't know already..

After 10 years, a sequel has finally been confirmed (titled Mother 3). Check out,
http://www.1101.com/MOTHER3/index.html
and click on the 3rd present box to see screenshots. It's actually set to be released just a couple months from now. This had me pretty psyched, so I just thought I should pass it around.

Unfortunately, though, there's no word on a U.S. release yet http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

We got word of it being confirmed... A couple weeks ago, I think.

But screenshots weren't around back then, heh.

Holy God, Mother 3 screenshots! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

I am very, very pleased that it still strongly looks like Earhtbound. I hope they show us some more screenshots too, like of the battle system.

Then, I think you'll be pleased to know that the site will be updated with previews of content every week until release http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I was stunned when I saw how similar it looks to Earthbound. I wouldn't want it any other way.. I'm just not used to getting what I want from sequels of my favorite RPGs.

Mmm. Earthbound goodness. Funnily enough, I just started a new game on Earthbound and have been casually playing it the last few weeks.

Can't wait for Mother 3.

That is certainly good news. I can't wait for more previews.

There are more Mother 3 screenshots! I know this is PSO-World and all.. and not EB-World, but I'm excited and I wanted to share them with those of you who haven't yet seen them.

It looks like some kind of spaceship is behind the dog. And a buffalo is waiting in line for the Lady's room?! Interesting. ..Also, I recognize the hot dog vendor guy from Earthbound. I love how similar the graphics are.

LOL. Do I see a ghost playing the piano and one of them drinking wine? I had no idea that ghosts were so civil and refined http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

The sign says DC MC. Makes me think of AC DC. Maybe it's some kind of concert? Maybe instead of a Blues Brothers style band like Earthbound had, there will be a rock style, AC DC parody band. That'd be pretty funny.

And, Kyosuke from Starmen.net translated one of Shigesato Itoi's blogs:

"Getting back my original intention, it was decided that "Mother 3" was to be worked on quietly, and because of that, the information is also being kept moderate. However, sometimes there are things that do not concern the details that I can't help wanting to talk about, and when that happens, I would like to write them down.

The truth is, last weekend my base work came to a close. Of course, if needed, I may still help out by way of e-mail and the like during the final tuning stages, but everything is completely written. Even up until the very last nameless minor character's lines. Just up until the other day, I faced a problem. "Should I let myself delve back in to make it a little bit better? No matter how in over my head?" This last month has been work to stop myself from doing so. Because if I were to keep working on it, it would never see a release.

Funny enough, it's to about the point where even if I had a really good idea out of the blue, it'd be better not to even say anything.

I feel happiness in that it's actually going to come out. I feel joy in that it's going to be unleashed. I also feel the sadness knowing that this work is now over. I feel a weakness inside.

It's alright now.
I think I'll be able to announce new information soon.
*Whew.........*"

Is it just me, or is this guy awesome? Shigesato Itoi obviously puts his heart into the games he makes. It's no wonder Mother 2/Earthbound has been such a cult hit. I can't take credit for all of this info, either.. I found it on Starmen.net, but figured I'd post it here for discussion. I'm stoked for this game's release.

There will also be a new Gameboy micro pack coming out in Japan including Mother 3, a Mother 3 exclusive micro, and a Franklin Badge.
The images are in the second unopened present in the website in the topic post.

I'm not really into the GameBoy Micro, but that Franklin Badge is freakin' awesome. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

EDIT: Also, that screenshot showing the "DC/MC" sign. I don't know what it is, exactly, but I think that it might be a picture of Dalaam. Dalaam always had an Eastern theme going on, and those Elephant statues strike me as being rather, well, Eastern.

While I'm as excited as everyone else, part of me can't help but lament the loss of the Mother 3 that was supposed to come out for the N64DD back in the day. Part of me always hoped they would work with whatever resources they had left over from that project and try to carry it over to the DS, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I wonder if this current Mother 3 is at all related to the Mother 3 that was being made for the N64. I distinctly remember there being a cowboy character in that old version, and it seems like there's one in the GBA games as well, so that's one similarity. I think there was also a blonde kid back in the day as well, so I guess it's possible that they just took what they had and remade it into a GBA game.

I'm sure Starmen.net has some old scans and screenshots from the N64 game. Somebody should go dig them up.

Ok.

First, the blonde mystery kid screenshots.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/Atayin/earthbinddoh14.jpg

Alright. Now for a couple of the GBA ones

http://www.1101.com/MOTHER3/images/screen02_001.gif
http://www.1101.com/MOTHER3/images/screen_01.gif

Okay. So, both kids are blonde. One would assume that they're probably the same character. Personally, I prefer the 2D sprites to the 3D ones, I think they've got more of that Earthbound flavor to them. And, that purple haired girl in the EB64 screenie is likely the same one as the one in the new GBA screenie. Interesting

And for Flint, the Cowboy in EB64:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/Atayin/m36.jpg
Mother 3 for GBA:
http://www.1101.com/MOTHER3/images/screen_03.gif
I notice that the main characters seem to always have a dog following them. Maybe he's important to the story. And, notice the similarity between both screenshots. Flint, the Dog, the Rain.. perhaps both games really do follow the same story.

And as for AC/DC ... err, I mean DC/MC http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

EB64:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/Atayin/earthb3.jpg
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/Atayin/earthb7.jpg

and again, GBA:
http://www.1101.com/MOTHER3/images/screen02_003.gif

So, it turns out DC/MC is the Mother 3 band. Maybe they're giving some kinda concert in Dalaam.

So, it really does look like Mother 3 will stick to the same general flow that EB64 was supposed to have, especially as far as characters go. We'll just get a 2D game instead of a 3D one, which i don't think is so bad.

EDIT: Is that the 2 members of the Runaway 5 (the old Mother 2 band) on the beach with the DC/MC shirt?! Sure looks like it! Big man and skinny man both wearing shades.. Plus, there's a tent nearby with insturments. Maybe the Runaway 5 will make a cameo in Mother 3 as DC/MC fans?
