New ads (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/Firocket1690/ads.jpg)

Rather large banner, if I do say so myself. Been showing up rather often, as of late. o_O?
Not really a complaint, but just a comment. Not used to HUEG banners. :3

XMods ads are just downright invasive. I close them only to re-open the second after. We really don't need this...

PSO-World.com has no control over the ads. The site is hosted on the Gamespy network. As part of that arrangement, Gamespy inserts their ads at the top of the site. The most we can do is ask Gamespy to adjust their ad rotation to use something less obnoxious.

Also, the website staff does not make any money off the site.

........... huh. You do it out of the goodness of your heart? Wait... being an admin for ANYTHING is fun... you mods do it for the fun, being a good citizen what is it?

There are ways to not have any ads show up, but unless forum rules have changed I can't post how to do so. I will say that there are a number of ways to block embedded ads however.

I understand that. That's why I'm questioning why the usually small/acceptable banner would suddenly sprawl out over more than usual on the page.

they are big and obnoxiuos...... i think thats the way xmods makes their money. I noticed them. I dont [u]want them but i noticed them. I am not sure who they expect to want those. Correct me if i am wrong but aren't most of the people on this site and PS players in general above the age of 13? most people, i believe, on this site are too mature for a miniature rc car.

I think it is mostly just a matter of Gamespy wanting to make more money. The bigger the ad, the easier it is to click on. I'll see if anything can be done to reduce the size of the banners at the top.

I'll admit the ads are extremely annoying. If it was up to us, there wouldn't be any ad banners. Unfortunately, it would cost several hundred dollars per month to pay the bandwidth costs for the site. Also, it is still against the rules to talk about ways to block advertisements. The only thing I'll say about the issue is that it is not very hard to block the top ad banners.

You could say that we all "do this out out of the goodness of our hearts." Also, it is a lot of work being an administrator/moderator. It is not a position to take lightly.

Speaking of which.

I lol @ Gamespy's badly coded advertisements (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/Firocket1690/brokenad.jpg)

Comming here for years, the place tends to load fast, and it wasn't until the recent tier of ads started peeving me. Hence, the topic. Hell, this place runs pretty well on dialup, due to the organization.

Ok I just got a really weird ad banner.

Why is it against forum rules to tell how to disable ads? Server host rules?

Because blocking the ads effectively kills off PSOW's *FREE* funding.

And those ads have closeout-buttons. Its safe to click on them.

Well, speak of the devil. The second i open this to reply, i get one of those freaking expanding banners. Frankly, i hate them! Move to a server that has no expandable banners!!! *insert angry face here*

btw, i get the same ad as Tingle as well. PSOW IS DOOMED TO THE ADS!!!!

Remember those ads from late December where you were presented with a full page ad and you had to click a small link to continue? Fortunately, we were able to get those removed. Still, there has to be certain trade-offs. The current flash ads are running across most of the sites on the Gamespy network in part because the more intrusive ads are not running on some of the most popular sites. I think we would all prefer if the flash ads didn't exist at all. However, they are required to pay for the costs that Gamespy has to pay.

Also, it would be fairly difficult to find a new server where the staff didn't have to pay for hosting costs. The site consumes a lot of bandwidth and processing time on the server.

As Ryna pointed out, with a little research, blocking the ads is extremely easy http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

http://psofiles3.home.bresnan.net/ads.gif

In fact there are several ways to do it:

Since certain people are not getting the hint, here is the relevant rule:

How To Erase Ad's Post
Posts on methods of how to erase or get rid of Gamespy's banner ads are not tolerated. This site is run by the actual viewing of the ad's, a steady decline of that viewing coupled with a increase in traffic would give us little or no lee-way with server problems in the future.

Asking VioletSkye to post the method or even PM it to you breaks the spirit of that rule.

I am going to lock this thread since the issue about the new flash advertisements has been addressed for now. If the ads become even more annoying or affect your ability to browse the site, feel free to create a new thread.
