I was accepted to Columbia College (http://www.colum.edu)!

They didn't send me anything yet (through the mail), but when I decided to check up on my application status today...

They told me I was "currently accepted".

LE WOOT.

Now I can live my dream of earning my degree in game design / programming without going to some god damn technical school.

LONG LIVE DA ME!

Say hi to Jim Rohn for me. I believe he is one of the founders of the Game department.

I'm going into the same thing, this was decided a long time ago... I intend to work my ass off to get there.

Congratulations. ^_^ Game Design is a fun program. I'm not at Columbia, though. I've been told their program is very similar to the one at my school, only they use Maya and we use 3D Studio Max. Not sure what they'll use now, since Discreet (makers of 3DSMax) bought out the company that makes Maya and Maya isn't, from what my teachers have said, being made any more.

That article's interesting, true enough, but I don't think it outweighs the benefits of knowing what you're doing before you go running out looking for possible employment opportunities. For example, I'm majoring in Game Design, but planning on sticking around for a masters in Media Arts and Animation, as well.

Who do you think would be more likely to get hired?

A guy with a basic college degree who's "creative" but has no real experience with what he's doing...

or...

A double major who knows not only how to animate in 2d and 3d, but also has taken enough courses to get a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Game Design?

Not that hard of a choice, I'm guessing.

Please note that most Game Design programs, at least here in the US, require that you take Art History classes, as well as a number of physics, math, and social science classes.

I don't see why the article says that it's stifling creativity in games when schools have Game Design programs. I know the one at my school does anything but - they encourage us to design whatever kind of games we want, they just point us in the right direction as far as the development process.

Sorry, I'm just really used to defending my major by now. I've had people critisizing it for various reasons for almost two years now, and it still pisses me off every time.

ETA: That isn't to say that back in the older days you could get hired almost by doing nothing... My Materials and Lighting teacher used to work for a game studio, I forget which one, and he told my class about a guy they hired because they saw him doodling at a Subway restaurant. That was about ten or twelve years ago, though. Things have changed since then. It's a much more competetive industry, so you need all the help you can get just to get your foot in the door.

Maya is the dominant animation form there...followed by 3DSMax. They started teaching that my senior year.

At least that was how the animation department was like. I don't know about the game department (they just added it). The interactive media department was just Maya for 3D animation, if I am not mistaken.

Congratulations! Hope you find success in both your education and future carrer. And remember, what you get out of an education is proportional to what you put in no matter where you attend school. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I don't think that'd really apply to me...

I'm doing the game programming track within the design degree. Full on production and design isn't my cup of tea.

EDIT: Here are the courses...
