View Full Version : Vectors?

Since some people mentioned the lack of vector art on here, I thought, hey, why not post a couple that I did not too long ago? They're not PSO related, though, because they were homework. -_- I had to do character design sheets for my Intermediate Modeling class. I spent way too much time on them (about 90+ hours total, over about three weeks).

These are just my two favourite vectors from that set (there are eight total - four dynamic/dramatic poses, and a four-stage turnaround).

I missed vectoring so much. I don't know why I ever stopped doing it.

Cool times two! Times THREE, even! Wow, I love them both. The second one, especially. The pose it conveys such beautiful, fluid movement... and the hair is awesome. And the boots. And the rest of it!

I envy your mad skillz of the vector. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Edit: OMG, the puffy shirt! XD
"You're gonna be the first pirate, Jer!"
"...B-but I don't wanna be a pirate!"

Man, that's some good stuff.

Lots of depth and the vectors lead to a lot of bright and shiny things there.

Lol, thanks very much for the comments. ^_^ In a couple weeks, I should have a 3D model of this guy done. I'm just finishing modeling his face, and starting on his clothes.

Very nice cant wait to see your 3D model, - quick side note - if you changed the colour of his blades to purple im almost certain they would qualify as LAvis Blades and thus bring into your pictures the PSO relation.

Quoth my mother: "Ooo, look at all that hair!"

In all seriousness, though, those're pretty darned spiffy looking. I have a question: how different is working with a vector graphics tool from creating stuff with pencil and paper? Maybe my memory's just playing tricks with me, but I can kinda see a stylistic similarity between the FOmar you posted earlier and this fellow. I dunno, I guess I'm trying to say that you've output the same style in two different media, and I find that interesting. A penny for your thoughts.

I traced over sketches for these vectors. Vectoring without following a photo or reference drawing is much more difficult, which is why I always work over a sketch.

The nice thing, though, is that vectoring allows you to make a nice finished piece without ever bothering to clean up the initial sketch.

Here's the original sketch for the kneeling pose:

It's totally different from sketching, though, if you're talking about the process. I'm working on making a tutorial for Adobe Illustrator/vectoring in general, because not many people know much about it, or how to do it. I find that disappointing, as vectors are extremely versatile, and they're a ton of fun to make. ^_^

I spent roughly 12 hours on each of the ones in this thread, and I barely even noticed the time pass. When I first started working on them, five hours went by without me noticing at all. Suddenly, it was 2 AM, and I freaked out.

Here is the first one I did:

It took me about 15 hours for that one, because I hadn't vectored anything in more than a year and a half.

What is a vector/ what does it mean?

-_-

Just a note, a tutorial on vectoring will not mean you're suddenly able to draw if you can't, Delfi. As for the other thing you mentioned, that was me being in a huge hurry and not particularly caring once I realized how long I was spending on just one view, when I needed 8-9 of them.

Anyway, to answer the question of "what's a vector?":

A vector is pretty much a mathematical equation/shape given visual form. At any rate, that's how it was always explained to me. The cool thing about creating art using vector shapes is that it can be infinitely scaled without ever losing quality.
