View Full Version : Skinning: Acceptable hacking?

I was wondering if the idea of changing the textures of the game would be considered acceptable to players?

Since the effects are clientside only, do you think this kind of hacking would fall into the acceptable grey area, considering its not much different from what SEGA does when they put up a holiday themed lobby?

It's acceptable AFAIK, and it will not work with PSOBB currently, or GC, although it is indeed possible

I think most people don't mind since it doesn't affect gameplay. Personally I'm a bit strict on this subject because I like playing with the original arrangement. (graphics, gameplay, etc)

Just a quick question, since this is only affecting client side this means no one else can see the skin changes?

exactly. Someone on the other end of the line would not see anything different. It would just be something to spice up things since we've been looking at the same thing for 5 years now in ep 1.

I personally wouldn't mind you doing that. If it was some first person shooter and you were changing the player textures to some bright color so you see the enemy better this would be a different thing, but in PSO this is no deal. You don't gain an advantage and you don't fuck other player's game experience up so it's perfectly alright with me.
Just out of curiosity: what kind of textures did you think of, any links?

transparent.

I actually started this so I could have a free floating camera to work with in The Monster Within. I was sick of cropping and losing tons of quality when i resized back up. I'm having trouble removing the character and HP/TP bars at this point, but everything else is gone. Monsters don't even show damage when you hit them anymore.

Here's one someone else did.

Neat. Try and change the rain into snow flakes(Forget what the rain texture is, or if it's an ingame effect).

Do people who skin themselves as Rico/Flowen/Elly/Sonic/Tails/Ninja count? I can see them in those forms. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Actually, it doesn't bother me at all. It doesn't give them any advantages. It looks either awesome and/or hilarious. XD

If you've got divx, here's a 2 minute video of the skinning in action.

If it affects only you and doesn't give you an advantage over other players (not that it matter much because you usually aren't battling other players), then grey area, grey shmarea. It's cosmetic and doesn't alter the gameplay a single bit.

Go have fun with it.

Its amazing just editing two textures can do to a level. The good thing is the program that allows you to observe and convert the files is easy to find and I know a person working on streaming skin data to PSO X-Box, so IF he can do that then I think it can more then likely be done on PSO Game Cube. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

BORBAN

How do you do that? Is it just some gameshark thing or do you have to do alot of things to do it?

Bogart
Apr 23, 2006, 08:12 AM
To tell you the truth, I don't have a clue about doing it PSO X-BOX I play PSO GC and PSO V2. Also keep in mind streaming is illegal and X-Box live (from what I herd) picks up when you modify your X-Box. So not the best idea unless you prefure playing offline play on every game you own. Then agian maybe thats for BIOS and not streaming. I really don't know. On top of that I haven't herd from the person who was working on his skin for xbox in a while. He might have not been able to do it.

Anyways some skins modifyed on pso pc look really top-notch. I like the "Lunar Landing" dragon boss area. The bad part of this is if you don't know what your doing you can really screw up game data like Jonathan_F said. Sooo yeah...... Gotta know what your doing.

Well, hypothetically, if cheating never gave anyone an advantage over anyone else and/or affect another player's game, then no one would care if people cheated or not... so I wouldn't see the problem with this.

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif It looks interesting, though I dont think I'd want to try it myself.

Someone recolored the sonic NPC to look like Shadow on Blue Burst...

I hope the maker doesn't mind, I put it onto my Photobucket, if I directly linked it, it'd lead to a site with some content that'd get me in trouble.

Somehow, I can still tell it's Sonic despite the skin. It must be his stance or his expression.

Bogart
Apr 27, 2006, 05:53 AM
Well ofcourse it is the Sonic model. Models have not yet been cracked and I wouldn't hold my breath on it either. Ontop of that the author of that skin said that is the best he could do because of limitations on the skin.

Are there any skins done OUTSIDE Forest?

It seems the obvious choice for new skinners to work on Forest first, but all the work is only ever seemingly done in Forest. Why not do an interesting area?

And JF, could you make a video of some other skins? I believe the snow forest is a free download somewhere (Maybe doing snow forest with the shadow model http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif)

I'm actually worried about this, since one of my characters uses the, "Ninja," model, and he's pretty much only a challenge character. I'm afraid of people refusing to challenge with me because I'm using him, but the fact is, I'm playing a HUmar ._. I can't say I'm not cheating, since I'm using that skin, but I'm not doing anything wrong by having the same stats as HUmar >_>

Yeah we know you are good PJ but the fact is that most people who like to modify data in games are normally cheaters. In a game like PSO, the possiblity of a cheater doing fsod or fsod-x is higher then someone who doesn't modify game data for obvious reasons (AR, proxy, etc)

If they are more people like Jonathan_F and you that don't use codes/hacks for cheating purposes, it would be more acceptable.

To answer your question on skins outside of forest PJ, yes there is one person who worked on skining caves 1 and caves 2. Also using a NPC requires hacking... But you know, If you use that skin then not alter the stats I don't see how that is wrong. People will probaly not want to play with you because of the skin. But I don't blame them. I only know one person who does that and is legit. Usualy the rest hack and that is kinda sad. :/
