Trouble getting online with gamecube PLEASE help

I just got the bba for my gamecube. I clicked on automatically obtain an ip address. When I try to connect I get the following error (no.015) Connection attempt failed. Failed to retrieve ip address from dhcp. Can somebody please help me? Thank You

I have the ethernet cable going directly from my modem to my gamecube.
My ip is dynamic so I don't really have the option of entering it manually.
Just to see what would happen, I got my ip, subnet mask, default gateway and entered them manually. I figured my ip would change when I disconnected my pc from my modem and then connected it to my gamecube but I wanted to see what would happen. I made it to the lobby but then I got "(no.102) you could not be connected to the server. Please check that your provider settings are correct before connecting. The Line was disconnected."

My isp is Aliant
Using a DSL Ethernet Connection (comtrend modem)
Phoneline to modem - ethernet cable from modem to GC
