When I was in New York recently, I went to some Japanese restaurant..I forgot the name of it, but it was good food.

Anyway, one of the appetizers was this mushroom soup which was one of the finer soups I have ever had. It was quite simple looking, really. The broth was quite clear, almost like water, but it had a great taste. The other visible ingredients were chopped green onions, grilled onions, and the mushrooms were sliced almost paper thin.

Does anyone know what this dish is exactly? I'm hoping to replicate it soon if I can find out more about it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Uh miso is pretty distinct and my guess would be Uncle would recognize it... plus miso usually doesn't have mushrooms and 99% of the time has tofu... so... it could be a variant but... meh...

Personally when I heard mushroom soup I was reminded of some sort of Thai "Tom Yum" type soup... but that is most likely not what you had. Otherwise you would have indicated something along the lines of Hot and Sour....

I've had miso with mushrooms instead of tofu.

Well anyways... Tom Yum XXX (gai (chicken) usually since I don't like shrimp) is really good... it also has mushrooms in a clear broth type thing made of wonderfulness... .

About three fourth's the way down the page.

They're common for miso soup in some places. Usually its just tofu cubes, or nothing if they're cheap!

Hm. Naw, they weren't shiitake mushrooms, I'm quite sure they were just regular white button mushrooms.

Each restaurant makes tiny differences is the recipes... Of course, that isn't my favorite soup out of asian side. I like won ton soup, the chinese make it extraordinary. The soja sprouts with the clear saucy liquid and the ravioli inside... mmmmmmmmm!!!

I hope you picked up a take out menu if it was that kinda place to see what soups they serve on the menu.

If not, here's hoping you go back for that amazing sooup sooner rather than later.

Ahah, well, I currently have no plans to visit New York again. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

In other news, I remembered the name of the restaurant. The name is Benihana, and I found their website through Google. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Additionally..

the soup pictured on the right is what I'm talking about. If you don't see it, refresh the page until you see it; it's the one with the mushroom in it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif I assume this to be the "Japanese Onion Soup".

Benihana is all over the place though, check out that locator map!

Glad you found out what they call it.

They left out all the ingredients however, trade secrets or just good business practice.

Hmm?

Ah, I checked their map, there isn't one in my state. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif The closest one to me is in Texas.

But yes, I'm satisfied now. I'm going to try to make it today. After some thinking I figured what the major ingredients probably were; several recipes I looked up backed me up on this. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Whoa update.

I replicated it almost exactly as how I remembered it. It was pretty damn good, but it seemed to be lacking something. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif
