Ok. The only reason why I'm even posting this is because I just bought a MadCats (yuck...it's all they had though) universal S-Video Cable today to hook up to my game systems yet its main purpose is for better picture quality on PSO. Anyways, I plugged that baby in and the colors just exploded and it felt as if I was playing a whole nother game! (not really but it looked great) Anyways, my point is that I know that I'm not the only one to wonder about "if I should get the S-video cable" and in my opinion, for only $9.99, the boost in quality is definately worth it.

Does this hook up to the TV or is it a USB video capture card sort of thing?

I noticed a nice jump in picture quality with Skorp's screenshots now that he improved to S-Video quality.

I believe the topic creator means TV to GC S-video console cable in this case though, whiteninja. Universal as in it will work for a PS2/GC/XBOX.

I'd been meaning to look into this as well since the last time I played GC PSO, it looked quite bad to me. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

My cable only cost me $6 USD. $3 for the cable, and $3 for S&H. If you have the ability to hook up S-Video to any display, I'd say go for it.

S-video is a GODLY jump up from standard AV cables, even with a company as terrible as MadCatz behind the wheel. Seriously, if your TV can do S-video (or better yet, component), you will blow your own mind by hooking those cables up. It really is like playing a whole new game.

Yes I mean from TV to GC. And although the picture quality without it isn't that bad, you notice a nice jump with the S-video attached though. If you have ever played PSOBB the detail is somewhat similar to that (depending on your graphics card ofcourse).

Actually the Madcatz universal s-video cables are very well made. For 10$ they are a steal.

Nice that you have better picture quality http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif but on my system here in europe the Scarts much better than the svideo option.

I use an RF switch currently, on a pretty bad TV... Though, one time I ended up using the R/W/Y cables for a day... and when that happened, everything looked so much better. o.o

About this S-Video Cable...
1) Does it let you hook into the antenna thing on the back of a TV, or do you need a VCR or DVD player? My TV is solely for my video game stuff (alot of it) and has nothing but the TV.
2) It is not a 1/10k drop in Normal is it? Because I don't want to have to start up a second hunt for one of them. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Thanks for the info, but that won't work for me.

I need the "N-Male Type RF Connector" (bottom picture, on the right)

I was replying to whiteninja.

I haven't used coaxial hookups as my primary since the SNES era, and that was only because the TV in my room didn't have composite a/v.

Dude whiteninja the RF means radio frequency you are basically tuned to your game and you can fit all those graphics and sound through one channel? So what channel do you tune in to play PSO? dude PSO isn't a radio program.

It was how audio and video signals were transfered between output and input before RCA (red/white/yellow) was widely introduced as an alternative method for signal display.

Yeah, yeah, I know I have crap. I find it hard to even read the names on my S-Ranks because the red text blurs so badly. -_-

I don't have anything else to plug my GC into though. No DVD player, or VHS player, or anything. It has to plug directly into the TV like it does right now.

:/

Pluggin directly is the best method in your situtation because routing it though other pieces of hardware will increase the interference.

If you can in the future, buy a cheap TV with S-video because it is so worth it. The quality increases is incredible especially in your situtation.

My TV is shit, I have to use coax to connect to an RF modulator for the a/v inputs http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif.

Is it safe to say that trying to use a S-video cable (my modulator has s-video inputs) would be worthless, simply because the modulator is connected to the tv with a coax cable?

Yes.

For a comparison between composite (Yellow) to S-Video I took these pictures long ago. Neither have been altered.

Composite

S-Video

It becomes especially apparent on higher quality televisions. Seeing as how S-Video has been out so long I am surprised to not see it as defacto standard over composite but at any rate the cables are cheap but give great quality increases.

Don't do it it is worthless. You need a direct connection with the s0video to the TV or else you are simply converting S-vid signals back into RF.

I went to EB games and bought the cables and I must say, the everything in the game are much more vibrant. The first thing I noticed was the text. The text is much more clear, almost like it's all in a different font. As I played the game, I noticed that when you freeze enemies, the ice looks much more detailed. Enemies, your character, heck... even the quest counter lady look much better.

For $10, I highly recommend getting the s-video cables. I still have to test this out with other games but I bet they will all be a much more pleasing gaming experience.

Edit - nevermind. I've just discovered that our Sony in the living room has s-video in the back. Madcatz is calling my name http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.
