I just played through the demo and I must say this game could easily pull the 'most disturbing FPS' from FEAR. I mean, it is just that messed up. Giant 'poo chutes' on walls definitely qualifies, right?
Graphically, it is on par with Quake 4 and Doom 3, obviously as it is made on the Doom 3 engine. It does have bloom but again the engine doesn't allow HDR. It runs very smoothly for all of the graphical bonuses.
Gameplay wise it isn't quite unique, but the way it blends everything together is unique. You have very disorienting gravity switching, where you can walk on walls and ceilings and whatnot, which is very cool. You also have these neat 'mirrors' that are teleporters. Not original by any means, but definitely implemented well. There's a good share of puzzles that, if unfamiliar with the genre, could take a while to figure out.
The storyline isn't Orson Welles but it certainly isn't anything to scoff either. Essentially, you are Tommy, an American Indian who wants to leave the reservation with your girlfriend Jen. Unfortunately, she doesn't want to leave but before you can solve that problem aliens invade earth. Your job is to try and save Jen from a horrible unknown fate under the aliens. You escape due to the help of an unknown 'brother' who detonates a bomb when you are first abducted. The 'shit hits the fan' so to speak at this point and everything goes nuts. I use that phrase as, well, you literally see stuff like that happening during the game. That and guys running around, in their whitey tighties, mumbling and crying that have escaped but are still trapped in the ship. During this you, through a process that involves spewing too much plot to say it, find your heritage and gain some spiritual powers to combat this new threat. Quite the task for a garage mechanic, no?
Believe me, even as horribly cheesy as that sounds it is actually implemented in such a way that it is very engrossing, and gross. This game should not be played by people who get scared easily, or get motion sick easily. It also gets very disturbing in parts and shows the potential chaos of an alien abduction run. However, it isn't without humor, albeit some of it rather disturbing and some rather adult. Again, there is strong language (f-bombs away!), very strong violence (body liquification anyone?), lots of nasty stuff (remember the excrement coming from out of the walls?), and according to ESRB partial nudity although I never saw it (unless guys running around in their undies qualifies for partial nudity which if that is the case is freaking stupid).
The demo is rather large, over 400MB download and 456MB installed. In my opinion, it is well worth the download as it even comes with a "Multi Prey" multiplayer. (Hurhur, so clever) Anyway, the full version comes July 10 and will be rated 18+ for our friends in the UK and Mature for us here in the US. If the demo is any indication of the final product, this is going to be GOTY quality potential, if nothing else but for the FPS genre if not overall.
