As many of you should already know, Microsoft's new OS is named Windows Vista right now. There are copies of the Beta all over the internet world. Has anyone ever tried this version yet? I had a friend with a CD key who burned an iso of it lend me the CD. I partitioned my HD so I didn't screw up my current OS and files and installed it.

All I can say about the looks of this OS is that it looks BEAUTIFUL. Well, the only problem, was the fact that I was unable to install all the programs I needed (firewall and drivers etc.) just kept on telling me that I needed a different OS (bleh). Although the new look is just beautiful (the tidbits here and there) it runs just any of it's other OS's. Anyways, here's a few pics to those who have not seen what it looks like yet.

Nice clean pic of the desktop.

The original pics were bigger... but photobucket shrunk them to unreadable sizes.

I've been running various builds of Vista for quite awhile now. I'm currently running the post Beta 2 build 5456, which is a HUGE improvement over Beta 2.

In fact there have been a few Vista topics in the past in which I posted quite a few images of it. I see you are running the actual Beta 2, you may want to consider trying the newer 5456 build. It doesn't have all the bugs and debugging software running in the background that Beta 2 has.

Heh, I'll look into that upgraded version. Vista took up 9 of the 10 gigs that I gave it, so I'll probably end up getting rid of it after I play around with it a bit more. So far it looks to be very promising and I may consider upgrading to it when it comes out.

Aside from running HUGELY better than 5384, 5456 brings back the icon for the 3D Windows Flip (instead of having to press Windows+Tab) adds new icons, and is a smaller download (only 2.61GB.) You can use your Beta 5384 Product key with it also.

BTW, I can't stand the Windows Sidebar so I have it disabled lol.

Also the Beta 2 was a public release meaning anyone could download it and get a Product Key for it. There will be a newer RC1 (release candidate 1) release also that should run much smoother than Beta 2.

I should really find out which version I've got installed on my second hard drive...

Oddly enough, after Jared_T and I screwed up my MBR for Windows XP with Norton Ghost (which doesn't seem to like my computer), installing Vista on the newer hard drive more or less fixed it; more precisely, it tossed in an OS selector thingz0r, and ka-booya, I can load XP again...

You should have been able to repair the MBR by booting from the XP disk, selecting REPAIR and after choosing the installation to do the repair on, type in FIX MBR, it may also have been helpful to run FIX BOOT as well. That usually corrects any issues with the MBR.

If that doesn't work, use a Linux boot disk(something like knoppix of phlak) or even a Windows based PE and check out the boot.ini file.

I'm not too good on computers (more of a noob to it), so don't blame me if this is a super stupid question, but if i downloaded that build and ran the exe on it, would it allow me to just 'update' or would i have to like... completely re-install the vista os?

None of the builds have included an update feature yet, so you would need to do a completely fresh install. It would be worth it though as it runs circles around the 5384 build. I'm hoping that the Product keys work with 5472, but I know for a fact they work with 5456. 5472 supposedly only features a few new icons and a new background image along with the new Windows Vista Basic User interface, basically the newer look for those who don't want to/can't run Aeroglass. If you can find a descent download for 5472 try it out, otherwise get 5456 as it is easier to find. I'm using my Usenet account for it so I don't have to worry about seeders, but either should work fine.
