Most people who have played the first Phantasy Star are well aware of the obvious "inspirations" taken from the Star Wars movies. And it appears that Sonic Team may be intentionally reminding us of the Star Wars "homage" with this poster (which incidently I have framed on my wall http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif -

See any similarity to this poster -

Coincidence? I think not.

Yeah yeah Death Egg = Death Star. we know we know...

But it just allows everyone to know "we are fans of Star Wars" it should be a compliment.

Normally I'd go along with that, but in 1986 there was no such thing!

I don't think there will be a lawsuit, Star Wars didn't invent sword fighting.

Actually I believe yuji naka himself stated that he was a star wars fan a couple of years back.

Star Wars also didnt invent sword fighting in front of lava, so no lawsuit indeed. "Ethan, I'm your father..." http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously though, great find indeed. I agree with an above comment that its an homage and a great nod nod wink wink that SW fans are world wide.

There will be no lawsiut as the poster is different enough to avoid copyright infringment.

There is no doubt a striking similarity with the lava and crossed light sabers. Also those guards in Phantasy Star 1 were obviously inspuired by storm troopers and Bobba Fett. There are many striking similarities between the first Phantasy Star and Star Wars, even the naem Phantasy Star bares more than a passing resemblence. Since Star Wars is a fantasy sci-fi.

It's all good though, Star Wars are the best movies of all time and Phantasy Star are the best games of all time.

wow another Star Wars rip off. The lava background can't be intentional as it was obviously released years before Episode 3, but those swords are more like lightsabers than any type sword I have ever seen (other than cheap lightsaber knock offs you find in toy stores).

Star Wars didn't invent laser swords.

Even if its not meant as an homage to star wars (which i have a feeling it is in some small way). There would be no chance of a lawsuit at all just because the odds of being able to prove they stole the concept of sabers from star wars, which would be pretty hard to prove.

hmmm people might as well say Tenchi Muyo is a lightsaber rip off. or Gundam.

anyways Star Wars is nothing original. people came up with all that stuff long before that.

Yeah, you know the government had to have been saying at some point long before star wars "You know, it would be great if we could build some kind of laser based knives or swords-persay for our soldiers, they would certainly be more efficient than a knife that can go dull or break"

there's alot of movies that show the clash of swords, but yeah you don't see too many lightsabers.

Actually, Rieko Kodama created Phantasy Star & it was her admission that she was a Star Wars fan that led to alot of inspirations within the games. First playing the game, I didn't realize this. I was just so into the game. Hey, I was 12! LOL Anyway, various weapons, enemies, & of course, the planets are based on Star Wars themes.

Maybe not but lets face obvious facts here. STAR WARS popularised "laser swords" and imbedded them into pop culture perminantly, so much so that the term "laser sword" is obsolete and lightsaber is a household word.

It is an established FACT that Phantasy Star is hugely inspired by Star Wars so I hope you are not atempting to refute that.

This poster may have not intentionally be based on the Episode 3 poster, but it seems that there may have been a subconscious influence there at least.

The more things PSU takes from Star Wars, the better. I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, so the similarities just make me want PSU even more.

I think at this point, Phantasy Star has developed enough of it's own style and design to really feel nothing like Star Wars when you delve into it, but on the surface it does have many similar themes.
