Internet nerdcore language known as 13375p34k. 1337 stands for leet indeed, which in turn is short for elite. This can refer to something or someone being good or cool.

"l33tspeak" isn't just a lame attempt to be cool. It actually came into existence when hackers and software pirates found that they needed a fairly simple form of encryption to get around scans for keywords on IRC networks. The FBI was prepared to catch keywords such as "warez" but they weren't prepared to catch keywords like "w4r3z" or "vv4r3z". It is, in fact, functional.

Sorry to say Meira but that is kinda bogus.

WTF!!?? Man, you either have to be incredibly gifted, incredibly nerdy, or incredibly gone in the head to read that jargon dribble.

It's the honest truth. You should observe, that the teenie-boppers trying too desperately to be "cool" on the internet are more prone to doing atrociously unintelligent things like abbreviating "any" as "n-e". This is not something you will encounter among those fluent in "1337", and comes from either the fundamental misunderstanding that "any" is, in fact, a three-letter word already (whereas adding the dash only makes it harder to type), and abbreviating as such in fact takes longer, or the misunderstanding that typing this way will make one more socially appealing.

Furthermore, the only reason l33tsp33k is used at all by the uninitiated is because it does come from "dangerous" types around the internet, and rather specifically the hackers, crackers and pirates. I rather expect that it should be fairly obvious why someone desperate to impress on the internet would try to emulate such a person.

It's just a simple matter of recognizing general shapes and resemblences, Tweengo. 3 looks like E, backward, and 4, with most fonts, shares a number of common shapes with A. 7, like T, has a bar across the top and another bar basically verticle, and with a little imagination and pattern recognition, 1 can be either I or a lowercase L. A double V builds a W fairly nicely, as well, etc, etc. Admittedly, it's a little odd, but it's at least easier to learn to read than say, Wingdings, which, I am aware of people who have learned to read this, as well.

Yeah, I never really had any trouble reading 1337. Wanting to hit people who typed that way in the face with hammers, yes; had trouble reading it, no. Amazing how most leet-speakers on PSO played HUmars, neh?

It's still just language for illiterate idiots.

All I know is backslang that some idiot some years ago teached me at school. Example: Hello becomes hagellago (elongate the a), and Tweengo becomes Twageengago.

Wouldn't you have to be more literate to read it? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

If you can't read leet, what makes you think anyone can read 1337?

Yet, its creation was purpose-driven, and conceived by individuals who routinely enact skills of such mind-mangling complexity, that only a handful of people on PSO World have the ability to understand the concepts behind them, and even fewer, the ability to perform these things themselves.

If you want to get an idea of what I'm talking about, try opening the installer for commercial software requiring a CD key or license in a Hex Editor, find the segment of code that receives the CD key and verifies its correctness, then reverse-engineer that to write a new program that creates a new CD key that will work. The same kinds of people that habitually do this sort of thing as a hobby are responsible for the creation of l33tsp33k. When you are to the point that this sort of ability is elementary and otherwise trivial to you, then you will be justified in accusing these people of being illiterate.

Just remember that there is a vast difference between using l33tsp33k and not demonstrating the ability to spell.

That's not l33tsp33k, dude. That's internet shorthand, and it is a terrible bane to everyone that understands that on the internet, your intelligence will be gauged by your ability to spell correctly and string words together cleverly. In regards to that, you are entirely correct. No one with any sort of attention to detail would permit themselves to communicate in that fashion. It is not, however, to be confused with l33tsp33k.
