Of all third party companies, Ubisoft is throwing its dev-power at the Wii launch the hardest. This week, Ubi announced it will be releasing Splinter Cell: Double Agent for the Wii and it will "be available for the hotly anticipated launch of Nintendo's new console."
"We are very excited to bring Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent to the Wii this holiday season," said Tony Key, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "The Splinter Cell franchise has always translated very well across multiple platforms and we are confident that the Wii version will continue the tradition of maximizing the capabilities of each respective video game console platform."
Sam Fisher returns in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. After his daughter passed away, he must go undercover at a terrorist's group American headquarters and gain their trust, having to do tasks for both the NSA and the terrorist group. Of course, completing these objectives will involve a mix of stealth and killing.
Ubisoft lists these as key aspects of the game:
- Dual objectives to fulfill: NSA government agents and terrorists will each want you to accomplish opposing tasks at the same time
- Discover the tension of being a double agent: Use actual tactics employed by today's real-life double agents to sabotage the terrorists' plans
- Explore a branching storyline with multiple endings: Your choices have an impact on how the story and game play unfolds
- A world of international espionage: Missions from all over the world, from Asia to Africa to the heart of the US. Experience extreme situations: underwater or in a sandstorm, hiding behind the dust or smoke - and even skydiving
- New authentic gadgets: Master the latest weapons and gadgets used by NSA government agents in addition to black-market terrorist weapons
The Wii version of the game is based on the PlayStation 2 and GameCube builds, but features enhanced graphics and gameplay. Of course, those gameplay enhancements come in the form of special Wiimote controls, using both the remote and the analog nunchuk attachment. The one example given by Ubisoft Montreal is that players will shake the Wiimote back and forth to pick locks.
It was revealed recently that Nintendo is not providing Wii online components to third party developers until 2007. As Splinter Cell: Double Agent is an early third party Wii title, it will have no online component. Also, IGN confirmed with Ubisoft that the added levels in the upcoming Xbox 360 version will not be present in the Wii version.
