Not too bad there Aki, very clean, you can tell that you did it without any changes, or very little erasing. Just fix that hand now and I hope I can see more in the future.

Its an interesting idea and i like this picture, although "she" isn t finished yet.

That is really well done but there is a flaw I can spot. The neck is too long. . . Otherwise, I can't see anything major.

At the moment I work on an other picture. Although it will be an amount of work, now I am already glad about the result. Actually, I could make my pictures also coloured, but I would not like to ruin them.

Hahaha, yes I'm glad they're decent drawings as well, too many most people over emphisize things. :s but otherwise, I wonder what's taking the next one so long?

Now two pics for all Halo-Fans:
The first one is an infected form (another "infected pic" http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif) by the flood. It is a really old picture.
The second one shows a human-like covenant alien. It is a new lifeform which is called "Seli Otar" (Sel Ot) or "Shadows" (translated).

Maybe you should consider using a different name for your new covenant lifeform, as they already have a ''shadow'' class in their armies (although it is an armoured vehicle..) ?

But I think the only ''ghostly'' name left to use would be poltergeists..ah whatever, name it what you want! (though the names of their species, Sel Ot, is awfully close to that of the zealots:P)

yes... in the past, I want to name the new covenant lifeform "Hybrids". But I thought thats not a covenant-like name like "Shadows".

Actually, the covenant only put ¨ghostly¨ names on their vehicles (barring the scarab, and possibly their spaceships.. well, atleast to my knowledge!)
while their troops share no common theme.

Elites,Brutes,Grunts,Hunters,Jackals,Drones,Prophe ts,Engineers,Sharqooi(I think thats the right spelling-.-)

It not too important whatever you name them, aslong as it sounds good:P

(also, dont mistake this for any kind of critique, this is just nitpicking from a Halo-Fan pointview^^)

Well... a good question... I think the picture with the HUnewearl and the RAmarl was hardest to draw. But what means "hard"? I mean, its not hard to draw a good picture, you must only spend more time in one. I spent 5-6 hours in that picture, but it wasnt really hard to draw. In my opinion all you need is enough time, an idea, concentration and a little bit skill ; )

oh, why of course. You are blessed like most artist with their degree of skill. Me? Well, I love art but some things I cant draw.... but not everyone can draw everything all the time. Some people cant draw humans while others could without a problem. its just one thing some artist fae untill they work on it. :>

I agree with you. No one can draw all things all the time. You can specialize to one thing, like humans, animals, backgrounds, buildings, machines or whatever.
But when you want to draw new things, you must spent a lot of time on it, especially learning and practice.
For example, I can draw (female) Charakters but I have problems with rooms and the background.

Wow, over 1000 hits at my topic within 2 month. Generally, a reason to draw and post more pictures here, but I think I will draw only 2 picture. just found this thread now but i can say that your work is really good. this last one definelty shows more depth then the last ones and shows your getting better. the only thig i would say is that the fingers on the left hand look a bit twisted but not a huge deal. keep it up!

That's a hard one I can't really say, it looks like you have "I love Delsaber" somewhat more planned (due to the notes on the drawing) so I say go with that one.

I must say, the second picture "D-Cell" is more finished than "Delsaber" (a really bad sketch... -_- ). Till "Delsaber" will be finished, there is a lot of work neccessary. Another projects, which are not postet here, are 2 comics ("no rares on S-Missions?" and "never play without item-distribution") and a picture of my team-partner "seraphine". At first, I want to finish one or both of my sketches.

The difference between Orta and Hinata: Ortas Hair are blond and she gets glowing eyes (as a result for a infection with D-Cells). But the hair-style seems to be the same http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif.

I just had a look at all your latest artworks and i really love the monotone thing you have going on. Im a huge fan of PN.0.3 (you may know what that is judging by a specific shape in one of your pics http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif ) and these artworks all bring that kind of slick style to mind. Yesterday I start drawing a new picture. At first it was just doodling, but today I clear the lines and coloured it. So... here is the result:

Hypnotic eyes? Thats one of the side effects of being a D-Cell http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif. If you are infected, the side effects are for example, that you are getting glowing eyes, your body temperature decreases, you likes to live in cold and dark places and you are getting a higher aggression border when you are getting in contact with light (the high UV-Radiation of the sun for example). Depending on your frame of mind the glowing eyes change their colour. For example: green is a signal that he or she is happy. Red eyes means that he or she is malicious against someone. Its possible to control some of these effects, but its very hard!

eheh... The glowing eyes have no special hypnotism ability xD. Its just a signal of her current frame of mind or like an additional part of her mimic. Blue eyes represent a kind of sadness and gladness together. A crying D-Cell have purple eyes... so, blue eyes are more sadness than gladness (happy = green or light-blue).

But... at first, I forget my other projects (Halo videos, Mass Effect Comics, 3D Modelling) and concentrating to PSO/PSU! That is something I missed so much and I think its the best moment to start with this! But I dont forget, that I must learn for my study (damn java -_-)...

The problem I had with 3D was that my knowledge of the human body was very low and I sucked with texturing. I am still very interested in anything that has to do with 3D modeling.

• Use big low opacity brushes and start making lotsa strokes until you think the shading looks ok. with low opactiy I mean between 1 and 10% flow on 70% and hardness 0%.
• Use lotsa layers! don't try to do all the shading in a single layer!
• Try to play a bit with "Linear Burn" layers. first fill the screen with white, next select the part you want to color with the selection wand. Pic a big, black, soft brush on 5% opacity and start making strokes and just see for yourself how it adds up in the shading.

Q, which program(s) do you use? I use gimp and I have to try to draw with a wacom (omg, this is more difficult, as it sounds T_T).

Since gimp/ trial version of PS, I never draw without layers. Layers are the most usefull function, but I have a bigger problem : (

I know, that many people say to me, that a graphic tablet make drawing on pc easier... but only for the lineart, I must spend many hours and the result can be very frustrated T_T. First I wanna say that the smoothness and cleanness of the drawing depends on how much time you spend on it.. the time I spend can vary from less than 2 hours (the coffee one) tot almost 20 hours (the Alex one I did for the contest).
So it's basicly the amount of time you wanna spent.. and of course you can speed the coloring process up if you repeat the same proces over and over. I usually like to improve my coloring with each draw, making me spend lotsa hours..

What do I use? I use Photoshop CS3 (hooray for cheap student licences http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) in combination with a Wacom Intuos A4 on a Macbook Pro. When I draw I always make use of a 24" Dell display.. just love the space http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

So how do I work?

I first start with a canvas of 7000x8000, pick a brush of 15px, put the zoom on 25% and start just with sketching, by making lots of very quick and short strokes, that will eventually look like shapes.. I most of the time start with the face.. cause for me the face is the most important part of the picture. Most of the time sketching takes 2 hours.. but I am a slow drawer http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
But remember.. your sketching digitally.. so make sure you take advantage of the fact that you can deform, resize and move parts of the sketch if stuff is a bit misplaced.. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
the result of the sketch looks like the one you can see in my thread right now (the one of Kelvie).

After I am done with sketching I merge all the sketch layer, and put the layer on 25% so that it is just visible enough to do the lining.
When I go line I pick a brush between 5px and 15px, I zoom in on 200% and just start to trace over the sketch in a new layer for very clean linework http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Before I start to color, I make sure the resolution is no higher than 8000px in either the height or the width.. or else my laptop is gonna cry (I got a C2D 2.33Ghz and 3GB ram in it).

Next I start with selecting the parts I wanna color with the selection wand (make sure you expand the selection 3px to prevent ugly white traces around your linework). I put these colors in a layer I call "flats".. I do no shading in this layer.

After that I create a new layer that has it's blending mode set to "linear burn". Now I first paint the whole layer white.. Linear Burn works with greytones, and if you paint black over something transparant, it will never be a grey tone.
for the first shading layer I mostly use a big black soft brush (around 300~500px) and 5% opacity. I select that part I want to shade in the flats layer, and just start to make strokes at the places where I want it to be shaded. From this point on it just a matter of following your own feelings and creativity.

I most of the time create several Linear burn layers for different detail levels.

Just note that when you only use Linear burn layers, the picture will have very flats colors. Most of the time after I have added 3 linear burn layers, I create a new normal layer underneath the shading layers and above the flats. In this layer I pick a big red brush thats on 5% opacity and I start giving the skin a nice reddish color.. I also do this for other parts of the character..

as you can see it's, most of the time a matter of just trying out and LOTS OF EXPERIENCE! I think you got enough talent. the best thing to get the hang of your tablet, is by sketching a lot with it..

Yea I think I remember...And I know Beast aren't in PSO but...I think the virus returned in the MAG quest. Its best for them to never look in the past but they found the D-cell virus again.

I'd say, you have to start sketching alot with the tablet.. it's the fastest way to learn how to use it.. I also dunno how your tablet is setup, but for me the tablet works best when it is mapped to my screen(example: the right corner of my tablet s the right corner of the screen). This gives the tablet a more natural "paper/pencil" feel.

You have nice progression of your work going on there, if I were to critique what I've seen. I would say, I would like to see you try to work on perspective some more, where a lot of them I see are head on. And pushing your colors a little more wouldn't hurt, specular highlights being something I've noticed. One thing that will help you in working on pushing colors, making the picture stand on its own, without a line layer. If you can get it to stand without line, with that you should have a good set of shades and highlights. Though one the one with the lady in blue, I did notice some didn't seem to have line. If I remember, on the skin. I'll be sure to keep checking back and see what other interesting work you got to share with us. I hope my input will help you keep on progressing on. Keep up the good work.

I completly agree about the coloring. About the color dept: The best way to get a pic more colorfull is by adding more layers with brighter and darker color.
I also agree about coloring without outlines! it really makes you think of how, why and where to apply shading..

I think the only problem I have is the (for us) left leg.. it seems a bit to thin compared to the other leg.

You can change the topic title by doing an 'advanced edit' when you edit your first post :wacko:

The left leg is ok, but the bewbs are too big ^^. I redraw them, cause the position is a little bit wrong -_-

thats really a good drawing, I'm not much of a critique, but I'd say the torso body and legs are fine, I don't think the chest is too big so much as theyre in an odd angle compared to everything else, the body looks more turned away from the Point of view, but the chest seems turned more too the right(perspective confuses me ><) than the rest of the body.
Meh take my advice witha grain of salt~ I'm no expert.

ah now I see.. the breasts are to far to the (for us) right. the middle of the breasts should start in the middle of the body.

I fixed the one or other mistake especially the breasts (I never draw so much big breats before...)

There are some things to do. Replacing the Agito with a Nei-Claw or Double-Neiclaw for example ^^.

What do you call 'long'?? for me long is 20 hours of lining+coloring and 12 hours is avarage and 6 hours is quick and mostly cheap and simple. Also try to think about what kind of coloring fits with your linework.. cell shading and such look good when you used fat lines and the heavy and realistic shading is usefull for lineless drawings like my creepy fairytale drawings.
Also try to steal as much tricks and ways of coloring from other artists. When I started with serious coloring, I've used Neo-kun's drawings as an example, later I started to watch more of the top users on DA. Even now my coloring is still evolving.

To much detail is nice when you keep it as a sketch/linework. When you have to color it, can become a pain in the @ss. It can even feel like a chore, instead of something enjoyable.

I haven't sketched on paper ever since I started sketching on tablet (ok.. I have to admit that my eraser simply sucks and ruined lots of pics.. :wacko:).

Yes, your right, but paper is much easier than my tablet ^^.
Additionally, pen and paper are more comfortable during a lesson or something like that ;)

it's true that drawing straight lines is easier on paper.. but tablets have some advantages.. and it's good practice if you wanna get fast and good with digital coloring.
