View Full Version : Music - Are you a composer?

I am. I like making my own music, seriously, I find it a cool challenge. The question is the topic title + which instruments do you play (if any)? I won't use a poll, or many instruments will be absent. I play electric-bass, double-bass, piano, french horn.
Though I'd check out who's musical in our community.

Played drums since I was 11 and they're my "main."
Guitar since 15. Not as good as I'd like to be, but practice, practice, practice.
Bass since 15 as well. Anyone can play bass.
I dabble in MIDI, synth, drum machines, sampling, etc as well.

I own an acoustic guitar that I like to pull out from time to time and play with. I won't pretend that I'm very good with it, but I do well enough. I'm also familiar with various woodwinds, and I've been known to put something together with Buzz (http://www.buzzmachines.com/) from time to time; although it's been quite a while, now.

I tried "composing" music once... But I discovered that that's not really where my artistic talent lies... Not to mention the lack of know-how... Always wished I had been a music person, but it was never in the cards for me... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I find that most creative projects are just a matter of sitting down and doing it. We often start with the assumption that we know nothing and cannot accomplish what we set out to, and the end result is that we don't get far. You really just have to carve out your niche to get it down.

After all, we live in an age of information. If you're confused about something, then just hop on Google and look it up. Be sure to set asside lots of time for research at first, and creating thereafter.

Usually the only thing that gets people through this tedious process is a love for what they make. This is why creative people tend to lean toward artwork, or music, or writing, 3D modelling, programming, and so on. They have a drive to see their creation into existence that overpowers their desire to give up when they encounter a hinderance.

So really Joku, if you want to make some music, then just sit down and do it. Grab an instrument and start playing with it, until you encounter something you like. That'll be a start.

Quoted for complete truth.

As posted, I started when I was 11 and never had any formal training whatsoever. I taught myself everything I know. I had a couple nudges in the right direction here and there from other musicians (and since the internet is what all the cool kids are using today, that'd be even easier), but it all came down to determination and that feeling I got when things started sounding good. Now I have a job in the industry.

It can work out if you work for it.

I'm not really a composer but I have made a few songs. I play electric and acoustic guitar. The only other I can play would be bass, but bass is pretty much guitar.

I can play any Percussion instrument you throw at me.

My personal favorite? Snare and Marimba.

I can take music I hear and play it on something (with a bit of practice of course).

Unfortuanetly, my school's band seems to SUCK (my old band kicked butt) so I haven't been in band since Freshman year.

Sniff, good times.

(I've been wanting to re-do SA 2's Green Forest on percussion for quite a while now, but I don't have the instuments anymore just snare and an old set of bells from like 6th grade)

I'm learning to play bass guitar. It's not going too well, because I don't practice enough. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

When I was in grade 3, I learned piano, and did that for 3 years

Coming into high school, I had ideas of playing the flute. But having told the teacher about my lack of air capacity, he suggested I try the trombone. It took me a good week before I could get a sound out of it.

I've been in band every year since, and continued to improve my Trombone-playing skills. In Grade 12 now, I'm doing pretty good for myself http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif I don't sound half bad. In fact, I plan on auditioning for a local orchestra this weekend, to earn some money. I don't know if I'm good enough, but it's worth a shot http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

EDIT: Also to make a point, in my class, I am always the example of what NOT to do in playing, and excellent work. I'm a clown, honk honk http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Sounds like we have many musical people here http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif That's cool.
As for the sitting down at doing it, that's not quite how it works for me. I go on the piano 2 to 6 six a day, even if it's five minutes and if nothing comes out it doesn't. Then it suddenyl appears to makes sens and my composing starts, that's how it really works, you need to try an try again until the vision comes to you. You cannot go to the vision, that would make a really bad song/music, unless it already exists and you know the notes. I've made about 15 pieces of music for now, and I like them a lot. Man, I've already learned Sakura card collector on the horn after I just recieved it two weeks ago, it's cool (once you learn one instrument the others are pipsqueek). and I actually composed a song while trying to find the notes, which is cool. Sounds like I'm the only one for Double-bass at the moment, lol, it's normal...

Trombone! (the best of all low brass) it's such a fun instrument, but almost no one plays it. (1st chair is mine!) it's great for marching, concert, and jazz bands. i geuss it works for orchestra too, but... orchestra sucks. i also used to play piano, and i occasionaly play bugle. (if that counts) but seriously, if you're considering learning to play a brass instrument, pick trombone.

I will forever hate 18th century styled Baroque, and the methods that are associated with doubling, partwriting, and Chorals.

For this reason, I shall hate Bach for the rest of eternity, as it he laughs at me from the grave for not being able to understand basic Music Theory. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I play piano. Been playing for 6 years. The most advanced piece that I can play is Chopin's Etude Allegro in Ab Major Op.25. But I can't understand why Bach would dare mention that my parallel 5ths are just the work of satan.
To me, they're beautiful!
So according to Bach, I'm not a composer.

Screw his awesomely magestic chorals! And his inventions and his baroque! *fume*

I like the french horn a lot, I'm getting better every day easily. And a trombone costs a bit more. I already play the double-bass, which is found in the 'rare' category, so one is enough. and bugle counts, I like that instrument too.

=> Eauijhkuu:
Baroque isn't that bad, especially if you play a bow string instrument. You get that slow rythme thingy and then it heightens to quick and sudden strokes, I love that feeling. Well, to show off a bit, there might be a connection between me and Chopin's family (woot!!!). And I like his music.

=> Pengfishh:
I agree that you might be able to play what 'sounds' like the real ones, but it'll never equal the beauty of a real instrument, you can be sure of that. the vibrations that you create while you play the instrument, the energy you give to it, it's thatsensation again, that... I'll just call it a duende, it kinda goes with that.

A funk trio eh? I just started a funk band this year, and we had a fun time coming up with names...I can't remeber all the ideas we're had...I liked Fellopian Groove...it didn't take off with the others, so I think I might write a song called that. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif UFO was another idea (unidentified funky objects.) ...these are all the ones I remember...we had other good ones too but they sliped my mind....

Wait a minute... trombone,...costs more than a french horn... when's the last time youve checked the prices? trombones are like $900-$1200 for a decent one and $1200 to $2000 for a really nice one. the last time i checked, even used french horns are about $1500+...
but whatever. at least it's brass http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I've just got to throw this out there, that I support musicians on OCRemix.org who remix video game music and kick arse while doing it. I've got so many mp3s on my computer that are video game music, I feel like such a dork. I hide that folder. But a lot of it is really good music, and it's a good way for aspiring artists to get feedback, and if you're good enough, exposure.
