I want to get a MP3 later on and what better a iPod or a MP3?

iPod's are MP3 players.

It depends on what you really consider important in your player. Do you want something mainly for audio, or more geared towards video?

Do you want to have to deal with software, or a player that works as a Thumb Drive?

What kind of extras do you want? Such as color screen, video and photo capabilities, FM radio, FM radio recording, voice recording, line-in recording, memory card reader, stuff like that?

How much space do you need?

Uhm, it might be hard to find one with audio AND video for under $100. But if ya want cheap, definately go with a regular ol MP3 player, cause iPods are anything BUT cheap.

I don't know about about regular MP3 Players, but the only iPod you'll find for under a hundred bucks is the Shuffle, and that doesn't even have a screen! So either stick with finding another kind of MP3 Player or raise a bit more money and buy the new iPod nano for hundred and fifty.

Best you can do for under $100 that is reliable is a flash player, most of which are not video capable (and the ones that do suport video are likely to be much more expensive. Most video players will be in the $300 range.

For less than $100 you get a choice of a variety of flash based players. Many of these players are reliable, even cheap, lesser/no brand named ones. Some will have screens that display the song, artist and album (often not more than that), others will have no screen.

Do you use Windows, Mac, or Linux? Do you have/use iTunes? Do you have any music from any online service besides iTunes? These will all help decide what would be a decent choice for you.

If your image means anything to you, get an iPod.
They aren't necessarily any better, at all - but they do look cool.
OR you could do what my friend does, he has some i dunno weird mp3 thing, but he uses the iPod ear phones so it looks like he has one, lame but it's kinda funny.

I have an iPod, and use different headphones because the stock ones are so ugly http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Mine doesn't have video (its a Creative Zen Nano Plus). Very cheap MP3 player, very, very easy to use, and reliable as hell.

If you want video definately, you need to get something else, but if audio alone could be enough, I'd definately recommend the Zen Nano to anyone.

Agreed

Fortunately, I did look on the online store, and noticed that they have refurbished 30GB iPods for $179...

Which I found to be quite...shocking O_o

I second that! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
It's all that UrikoBB3 says, and on top of that, it comes with a built in FM radio (a bonus for me, but probably not many other's would use it), and it has a line in + MP3 encoder (handy for easy digitizing from obsolete sources, like VCR, tapes, MD's..)

The only disadvantage is the small memory.

How much is the Zen? How much does it hold?

if you're looking at Creative's products, check out the new Creative Zen V. It has a color screen and can handle photos. The upgrade, the Zen V plus, is a little bit more, but also can do video. Not sure if it's available yet anywhere but Singapore.

I have a Creative player and it's great. So my recommendation is the Zen V.

The Zen Nano plus (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=12720&nav=0), http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a159/T0m/zennano.jpg, was, in my country, with the smallest memory available (256 MB) €40.-
(I didn't even know it came with larger memory too http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif)
I don't think Shadows of Valenciaga is a place near me, but the Creative site allows you to see specific details about many regions, when you check for the Product availability.

This is going to be a pain to get! The only store that has them is Circuit City.

Does the PlaysForSure thing work on any music store, because I have iTunes and Windows.
I don't even know how I got iTunes so don't ask.

Plays for sure will tell you the type of music format that will work with the player.

Flash players are harder to get movies on them due to the memory and compression, that is if the model even supports it.

There was a 4 GB model for $170 last week @ Bestbuy: Product page (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7716199&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat63100050013&id=1138087124232) but its sold out online and if you have a Bestbuy close to your location you can check the availibility there with the link on the lefthand side.

That one is a bit expensive but less than the Nano with the same size memory, and the lighted scroll wheel design is easy to use- with a bright screen.

Flash players without video are cheaper of course, Bestbuy has a ton of those too as well as one Nano 2GB for $150. Link (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat63100050013&type=category&parentCatID=false&initialize=true&_requestid=149571)

Each product detail page shows which services work with it as well, Ex: Napster/Yahoo/etc.

The funny thing about an iPod is that most retail stores will sell them for much more than the official site does (that's including VAT, and shipping is free).

Take for example, Argos sells 30GB iPods for 259 GBP, yet you can get one from an Apple store for 180 GBP (this would even be less in America- most thngs are more expensive in the UK http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif ).

In the end, there are 3 factors as to which MP3 player is best for your use (which I don't know, so I'll leave you to it http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif )
1.) How much music you have to put on one, and how much you will purchase in the future
2.) What you want it to do
3.) How often you'd use it

it's better to get a new phone and put a bigger MMC into it, just like i'll do next month. this will give me the possibility to have both - cell phone and mp3 in one piece of machine. i'll be able to recharge the batteries endlessly and the battery holds up for 540 minutes of listening to music or up to 16 days without any actions. will not be the cheapes way, but you have to get a better phone sometimes.

I'm still saying that the only reason they took back the Mimi was because they were cheap and evil. Great amount of songs for the moderate music-lover. If you have more cds than you can count, you had better increase your budget for a mp3, because i'm not sure if you can fit that many on. But I love my Mini, it has never done me wrong, even though it is dirty as hell. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

(That's a lot of posts)

I was looking at Creative, but the iPod nano has the amount of storage I desire. I'll probably get one in a few weeks.

Like I said my computer is lagging badly. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I saw some of the Zen one and it looks great, so all I have to decide next is the $50 or $70.

iPod nano is actually a pretty good deal these days; they upped the storage a little for the same price it used to be, reworked the play capabilities (it can play gapless, for instance... it's a little thing, but it was something that always bugged me about the old iPods), and if I'm not mistaken, it runs on flash memory. That means everything loads a little faster and smoother than regular-sized iPods, and there's no risk of scrating the hard drive or anything similar if you drop it. The only problem is that a lot of people want to carry all the music they own around with them, and four or even eight gigs simply won't cut it--if you're willing to spend $250 instead of $200, I'd say the 30 gig video iPod is an even better bargain. I <3 mine a lot.

As for other players being more or less good than iPods, I can't really say... I can say, though, that my various iPods have never really let me down and were only replaced because I came to have more music than they could hold. Maybe I'm just more careful than most folks, because I'm certainly not more lucky when it comes to electronics, but I've never had a problem.

new nanos are colored, and now offer 2gb, 4gb, and 8gb.
w00t. That's sufficent for most of the population. The others generally have a bit more ~20gb, and the obcessive have around 40gb+

Music is dead.

it's probably my obcession with ipods and whatnot, but for the smaller players, you can find a nonipod alternative if you seek 8gb and less. If you have a handful of stuff in one playlist you want to carry around, the buy the new shuffle when it's out november. That thing's sexy as hell x)

If you choose to hold all your stuff in there, the 30gb and 80gb ipods are worth it. Physically smaller than most other hard drive players, smaller screen, and a lot more durable. Well, then again, the screen size doesn't bother me because I don't use it for videos. :3

my friends 3G ipod is still working great in its 4th year of use.

then again, another friends ipod was fried in 6 months.

when you buy mass-produced electronics, you're bound to have some duds in there. just think about it: people complain louder than they praise.

I'll probably get a Zen, its much cheaper. I went to a Target and looked and saw a iPod for $150. Being jobless sucks. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

I picked this up today. (http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&prodBlockOID=1611428330&expansionOID=-536907165)

-$100 or under
-Plays video
-Okay sized memory(more costly per Gig as its Flash memory instead of Hard Drive)
-Nice color screen
-Good battery life

From my time with the store demos they are easy to use.

Only problem would be seeing if the video conversion process takes a while or a lot of space.

I'm warning you not to order your iPod through the apple store. If FedEx loses it (like they did mine), Apple will be adamant about getting their product first (or for FedEx to admit that they lost it, which they won't) before you can get a refund. Order it from Circuit City and pick it up. I'm telling you, you'll be a lot happier. It's the same price, and you don't have to wait for shipping.

That blue Nano looks really awesome but whats with paying $200 for it and the silver is $150 that seriously sucks. Is there a store that sells them cheaper?

Did you happen to check Apple's Certified Refurbished products?

Surprisingly, they have some really nice prices on the refurbished products.

(Refurbished 30GB at $179 ftw)
