What is Roleplaying?

I am unsure what role playing is.

I have read a few threads asking wether people WILL roleplay but i don't know what it is. Do you mean 'I am a mage and shoot fire!' or 'I am a fighter and use lightsabers for killing!' or is more about 'My mother was an alchoholic and my brother was scared of bats and therefore i was left on the doorstep of a retired football player who taught me the way of the ranger, and i made a vow never to touch a melee weapon as long as i lived. Embarking on a wonderous quest i obtained a fear of ice from twin acrobats and struggled emotionally against it whenever. But some years later i was trapped in a cave with a giant sword for three months, where i eventually married it and broke my oath to my ranger granpa person. He was so heart brokon he commited ritual suicide and i wandered the earth in search of a spirit medium so i may resurect him and apologise. But when i finally found one the giant stone man who blocks the path for some reason said i required level 60 to pass. So now i kill stuff for kicks.'?

So which kind of roleplaying so you all mean? OR do you all plan on rolling dice to determine what quest to do/who gets the rares as in the way of olde?

one is roleplaying (acting as your character), another is just a lie. *shrugs*

Err...if I'm reading that paragraph correctly, you've pretty much got the idea of roleplaying.

It's essentially acting with your character as a character separate from you: a regular player might tell someone "Oh, I'm just a guy who's playing PSU.", but a roleplayer would tell you "Me? I'm a new recruit for the Guardians. My dad thought it might be a good idea to sign up". Degrees of roleplay vary, some people just toss in small elements of the game into their speech to add some flavor to the game (perhaps saying to your party "Alright group, we're going to embark on a mission." instead of saying "k guys u all rdy 4 quest?"), and some people even go as far a whole story of their characters, kinda like that silly paragraph-of-a-character-backstory you've got written up. For the most part, roleplayers don't have their characters speak as though they were in a game, they speak as a character in the PSU world would.

Yea it may seem weird at first, but it's a blast and makes the game a lot more fun! But becareful though; there are people out there who are anti-roleplayers and hate our kind. >.>

We have a friend who almost stopped his life to play FFXI and now we show him this video as a reminder of what he was.... and he hates us for it ^__^

Growl, I enjoy a good RP myself but honestly... my character background will be more like: "Handsome and charming Human Force looking for Newearl with beautiful eyes who enjoys slaying Dragons and hot tubs. [READ: Emo teenagers need not apply.]"
