This is totally unacceptable on all levels. Gaming as a whole has taken a huge hit today because of the actions of the people who did this. I'm just glad that no one was killed, but I think this could be the end of the launch day lineups.

Nothing new. It happens at concerts, sports events, and anywhere else where there is limited supply but huge demand. Frankly the fact it was a BB gun makes it at least safer than going to most high profile sports events, especially national matches in South America. It's unacceptable but it's not going away and it is far from extreme.

Drive-by pellet/painball shootings are nothing exceptional. The idiots just saw a bunch of sitting ducks right out there in the open, so they took the opportunity.

BB Drivebys? Amazing! Gangstas gotta step up for them PS3's, ya know!

Yeah, I doubt they were targetted because they were waiting for consoles, it was just that they were standing outside in a line/group and were easy pickings.

While it's very possible to die from BB and pellet guns, it's not all that likely. I had a neighborhood kid get shot in the back of the head, right behind his ear, point blank, by a pellet gun from one of his friends, and the pellet merely lodged in the bone.

..and I don't see how gaming has taken a huge hit because of this, there have been worse things happen over gaming, right up there with stabbings and much harder hitting firearms.

What makes you think this has anything to do with console wars ?
Do you think some xbox360 nerd picked up the courage to drive down the street with his gangsta BB gun and fire off a few rounds ?
As said above, BB/Paintball shooting are nothing new or special.

If it was birdshot from a shotgun that would be bad, but since it is probably just airsoft or .177 BBs it ain't gonna do any damage. Stupid, illegal, and a little funny.

At least they weren't robbed as they waited, or subsequently immediately after obtaining those $600 game boxes.

Sad enough they are waiting days in advance, ready to plop down $600 just to be early adopter "more hardcore than you" guy/eBay resell guy.

I warned the people waiting outside my store of this before i left work tonight. I hope nothing bad happens, cause one of my friends is in that line.

stuff like this really annoys me. I don't like a game sysatem enough to camp on launch day, but that's no excuse for someone to shoot at them, bbs or bullets.

you guys should stop tryin to play it down. I'm pretty sure attacking someone AT ALL because of a video game console is pretty fuckin extreme. And ps3 does suck.
Also, even though it does happen in many other scenarios much more often than in the video game community, people are always looling to demonize video games. This is very serious, indeed.

And now the somewhat smartest store in the USA

A Best Buy store in Boston, aware it had only 140 of the consoles, got smart about the big sale _ its employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line so everyone could go home until the store opened.
From toh's url source.

Except probabyl people get mugged for a sheet of paper!

I never had this problem for the GC, let me tell you http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Attacking anyone, period, is bad. The fact is, that there have been much smaller things that people have been killed over. This isn't the first time videogames and consoles have been the catalyst for violence. If you're used to it, it's not news.

Also, even though it does happen in many other scenarios much more often than in the video game community, people are always looling to demonize video games. This is very serious, indeed.

Let people demonize videogames, who cares? People demonize anything that they can point the finger at and say is the 'cause' of violence. Soccer causes riots, ooo, lets ban soccer. Same thing, in the end, soccer will continue to be played, regardless of what the idiots in the stands do. It's the same with video games, we're not going to have our M rated games taken away just because afew teenagers wanted to go mug some people standing in line outside a Walmart.

Shit happens to everything and everyone, this time shit happened to people who were waiting outside for three days to buy a game console. Gee I don't know, lets all just hang out in the middle of the street at the deep dark hours of the night and see what seedy people come out.

Shame on the people who were doing all the robbings and shootings, but seriously, 15 people in line, one or two people with guns, and they'd all get mugged one after the other? What happened to mob-mentallity where we all get together and defend ourselves?

Lemmings.

Who's with me? 6-year-old kid snipes someone for a LoZ:TP for the Wii.

I'll start with 5$. Any more bets? Huh? HUH?!

Englewood, eh? That's not too far from where I live.

Still, out of all of these muggings how many people went in, purchased their system, went home and played it with no problems? 99% or better, right? What was reported were the extremes of the situation, just like any situation that the news reports on. You always hear about how Joe had his family jewels cut off by a spiteful wife, but never hear about Bob who just became the father of a bouncing baby boy. Why is that? Because Joe's story is a shocker, it's abnormal, it's rare, and it gets ratings. The sooner people realize that what the news reports is far from the norm the sooner they realize the world isn't nearly as bad a place to live.

EDIT: I noticed that the furthest south reported was Tennessee. Hmm... Southern hospitality still exists I assume. I also noticed the majority were from high-crime areas in major cities anyway. Oh well, good way to get ratings I suppose.

If they moved, the vultures would have nabbed up their spot in line. People were willing to die, literally in some places, for their spot in line. Sad but true http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

No. It is, and always has been, a complete farce. Thing is, the farther down south you go, the more likely it is that the people in line will return fire when something like this happens.

That, and there's a basic lack of civilization/civility, in the first place. It probably couldn't even make it to the news reporters. :/

Regardless, I think we should dub these situations as "the Sony Effect." I don't seem to recall as much violence over 360s... Or any at all over a Wii yet.

a list of several other violent acts, not just shooting, that are pretty much are all more severe, painful, and lifethreatening.

I'd really would lol if the media dubbed this "The Sony Effect" though it would be unfounded since the reason they are having this problem is the consoles are much more valuable than the Wi or 360 (don't forget resale prices!)

Huh, when I lived down south I noticed how much more friendly it is there. Then again, Ohio seems to be filled to the brim with assholes so I might be biased. Then again, I've never seen bikers help grandma out with her groceries except down south of which I've seen it more than once.

Well, Tennessee is more like... The borderline where you cross into "the south." The population there is probably a lot less... saturated.

During my (rather hellish) forced stay in Mississippi, living amongst the people there for about ten years, basically everyone I've come across (teachers, people working, "peers," etc.), all except a scant few, were not only ... not exactly bright, but also stuck-up, self-righteous, and intolerably fanatic about their religions (as in, if they find out yours is different from theirs and don't convert immediately, they're not above resorting to violence). Not to mention, the people in general, were very prone to theft, among other things.

What's even more interesting, is that when I was finally able to move back up here to Minnesota, a large majority of people I've met, have been real nice and helpful, and some of which have actually had similar morals to myself, and try to be generally good samaritans (even some of the people in the twin cities, which was unexpected).

This is my mentality of what goes on in the south:

If you're with me, we're inserperable. I'd do anything to help you out, just ask.

If you're not with me, don't piss me off, or I'll kill you.

Mind you, I'm not fluent in gangster XD

Sadly, that's exactly the kind of crap I had to deal with on a daily basis...

Being open-minded and thinking things through, naturally, landed me in the middle of a lot of conflicts.
