dood.
You have a last.fm account. Take pride and use it. You're not in the psow forever group for nothing.
Speaking of that, we need to do somethign about that. Wazzy and I have some decent similiar music. Whatshername, Aust is quite funky with that audio stuff. And Hrigg's just all hrigg-y. We don't even have enough people to generate last.fm group statistics. ;3

[thread hijack hijinks]
Sure am funky, Firo. 8) But, Jesus Christ, I wish I could get that Enya trollop outta my number one spot--not that she isn't lovely, but I haven't listened to her in an age, and when I did it was mostly to drown out my ex-roommate's cell phone gabbage.
And, you guys, what the frunch is up with the new neighbors feature? Even my "Super" compatible neighbors' charts share practically nothing in common with mine. :< My closest neighbor and I have only 2 artists in common in our top 25.

Furthermore, yes, we need more members for our super-awesome group. Ice cream for the first dozen to sign on.
C'mon, PSOWers, join up; it's better for you than asparagus (and significantly tastier).

In summation, Hrigg, that list is too long; no sane person would read it. At least bold the artist names or something.

First:

You spelled Led Zeppelin wrong.

Second:

I have albums. Heartbreaker is on LZ II and Stairway to Hevaen is on LZ IV.

They are also both on How The West Was Won, which is a live album.

Yeah, I'll bold the artists.

Bolding = so much easier to read! :>

Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
Live Frogs: Set 2
+5 awesome points awarded to Hrigg. Les Claypool rocks my sockpuppets.
I'd recommend Oysterhead and Primus.
Also, look into Dispatch (having only "Bang Bang" and "Who Are We Living For?", I can only rec those albums, but I bet the others are great too).

I'm also definately getting more stuff by The Beatles and Queen, so hush. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

not bad, not bad at all. a bit small, though you said it isn't your entire collection. i have a rather considerable amount more for complete albums, so i do have a bias on that i guess. but you do have quite a solid collection of the appropriate classics of rock, well from at least the 70s onward. a bit focused, but quite solid otherwise. i'm tumbling towards 30 myself and i'm hazarding a guess that you are somewhere over the drinking age yourself.

i really can't include what i have. it'd take too long. also, since i'm older, i have quite a bit on cassette as well. some of it i just never found redone on CDs... that and my collection is rather schizophrenic in some ways. if i posted it it'd probably break the space-time continuum. but you get props for knowing your old skool.

You need to get Deadwing (PT) and maybe the live dvd as well. Also pick up stars die if you can find it ( I got it off Amazon).

Also, get some Opeth. Blackwater Park, Morningrise, Damnation are my favourite albums. Damnation is all mellow songs though.

The next time you're on, I'll have to show you some more Bowie. I still need to let you try out Low, "Heroes", and Lodger. Those are all excellent listens.

You also need to get that Godspeed You! Black Emperor EP. I've got a copy, I'll let you try it out sometime.

I'd also say get some more Queen. Greatest Hits I & II (sexy little double album) is a great place to begin. It's got plenty of great tracks on both disks.

I second this recommendation, and a little 'Earthling' never hurt anyone.

Also you'll need more King Crimson, shall I suggest "The Power To Believe." Has a great Tool-ish sound, with battle guitar.

Oh, yes, that's right. He does need some.

I suggest the following albums: Deltron 3030's self-titled (it's the only album they've made, sadly), DANGERMOUSE's The Mouse and the Mask and Occult Hymn EP (available as a free download from AdultSwim.com), and Madvillian's Madvilliany.

All of those albums are brilliant. The backing music is very technically skilled, and the raps are high quality and full of amusing lyrics and clever rhymes. The samples on some of these albums are also pretty cool (DANGERMOUSE mostly samples Adult Swim, and Madvillian uses some very exotic samples on Madvilliany).

Stone Temple Pilots
Core

Get Purple too.

And since I'm listening to it at the moment, if you liked Soundgarden I guess you should check out Chris Cornell's solo effort, Euphoria Morning. Not really Soundgarden-ey, I guess, but a really nice and underappreciated piece of work.

And what are you doing with Soundgarden in your library if you don't have Badmotorfinger too :( Shame on you!

Alice In Chain's self-titled album is also quite good, if a bit different and much more dreary than Dirt.

If you don't mind a bit of whiny guitar, Stratovarius are a great band. It's kinda hard to gauge what you'll like- your music has a lot of variety. Thing is, I've noticed their albums are increasing hard to find in shops- online might be a better choice.

More Iron Maiden. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif Seriously, you have Powerslave (best album, in my opinion), I'd suggest getting Piece of Mind if you want something similar, or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son for a bit of change (as much as Maiden do change, which to be fair, isn't a massive amount)

I'm not really a fan of bands like Wolfmother, so I'll steer clear of that end of the spectrum http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Soundgardens Down on the Upside might be worth a try too, it's really nothing like Badmotorfinger or Superunknown but still very good (I would get Badmotorfinger first though, personally)

And yeah, Primus! Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda in whatever order

My hero!

LOL, I second the whiny guitarness.

Since you have Dream Theater and obviously taste, why not try some Iced Earth. Something Wicked This Way Comes is an awesome album to start with, as well as Horror Show.
And if you dig that, Blind Guardian might be up your alley, too. Any of their albums rock.

And if you like your lyrics on the black metal side, but your music on the melodic and power metal side, check out Summoning. Stronghold and Dol Goldur rock my socks.

And for crying out loud... WHERE'S TEH NIGHTWISH?!?!

More rock for you:

Boston - Don't Look Back
Deep Purple - A greatest hits album would work here, then see what songs you like from there and play some samples from those albums (a good way of finding cds)
Stratovarius - Episode, Visions of Europe (a live album)
Rush - 2112, Spirit of Radio (a greatest hits album)
Jimi Hendrix- Are You Experienced?
Cheap Trick - no specific album, try the greatest hits and working from there
Eric Clapton
For some holiday music try listening to Electric Light Orchestra (they also have one non-Christmas album and are working on another)
Foreigner - Foreigner, Double Vision and 4 are good to start with
Guns N' Roses - Live Era
Blue Oyster Cult
Styx - Kilroy Was Here
Van Halen - Van Halen, 1984, 5150
Billy Joel - Piano Man
The Kinks
Bad Company - Bad Company
Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

If you want the ol' Blue Oyster Cult, I suggest the "Spectres" album. Two songs about vampires and Godzilla. What more can you want?

On another note, you might also like Mercyful Fate/ King Diamond.

Depends on what ya want. Folky stuff- Bob Dylan, Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Another Side of Bob Dylan. If you want some more electric stuff get Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde. Can't go wrong with any of it. For a new fan, I would get Bringing It All Back Home. Sorta in the middle of folk-eletric, good stuff.

It appears you're well-versed in bands that have seemingly "broke-big" over the past decade or so. Its definitely good seeing younger people that are into goodies like Slint, Sabbath, and My Bloody Valentine though.

I'd recommend getting some hardcore, punk, hip-hop, emo/screamo ( The roots variety, not the AP Magazine trash-flavoured refuse smothered in eyeliner), folk, power-violence, and some wonderful Traditionalist/revival orchestral re-productions of Stravinsky's work. I can recommend specifics, if you prefer.

Mr. Bannon's work is undoubtedly awesome, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "emo". I'd say its akin to a mixture of early-nineties metal-core and grind-metal.

Their latest full-length is killer! In fact, I'd go as far saying that Converge is the best thing Epitaph has going for them (and will remain as such unless Poison Idea and/or the New Bomb Turks reform and start crafting records for them again).

A record collection sans material from Dischord Records is one that is lacking.

I got a decent haul at Reckless today though.

I Wish I - "Farenheit"
Crazy Cali-yaps that played an odd mixture of DC and NY post-hardcore (Quicksand and Kerosene 454 come to mind). Apparently pro-skater June Cate played bass for these wackos.

Bluetip - "Post-Mortem Anthem"
It's Jason Farrell at the helm, so you know its going to be wonderful rock'n'roll with tipsy time-signatures with a penchant for all things angular. Excellent package design as well.

Das Oath - s/t EP
Mr. McCoy seems to be going through the motions on this one, most likely due to their semi-recent break-up. Regardless, it still beats the pants off most modern har(t)dcore bands.

Holy Molar - "Cavity Search"
Odd samples layered over obnoxious synths and blast-beats (With buzzsawing guitars). Deliciously abrasive, and not likely to recieve "air-time" at your high-school prom.

Retisonic - "Lean Beat EP"
See Bluetip "description".

hey, hey, what's this? Joy Division? Massive Attack - Mezzanine (a seminal work)? very, very good, young jedi. was pissed beyond belief this holiday season. most of my dream concerts came to where i live and i was helpless to go because of so much damnable japanese school work. curses....

Sun O))).... they were definitely something in concert, i'll give them that. and i give props to replacing the traditional heavy metal horns hand sign with that "crooked claw of doom." not exactly my favorite at the concert though, even though they were able to use reverb to systematically (and i guess artistically) massage my internal organs. the vibration was so intense that everything felt smooth for about an hour or so after, even things like stucco and concrete. far more partial to Boris for my doom metal myself. they recently produced a great transition album, touching upon doom metal along with straight up grind with a touch of speed, in 'Pink.' check it out in the japanese import section i guess, but you can often find it in the metal section.

oh, want a weird, but great, suggestion? do you like Depeche Mode? probably not as it's not on your list. anyway, try Moenia. it's like the spanish version of Depeche Mode. fun stuff.

You have a pretty good list with a lot of good artists, it's also pretty diverse being that you're only 15. I could recommend a ridiculous amount of artists/albums to you, but I'll feed you in doses.

Check all of these out:

Hella - There's No 666 In Outer Space
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4b/666outerspace.jpg

Since you have The Mars Volta on your list (my favorite band by the way, if you ever have a chance to see them live pleaaaaaaase do)--Hella's newest album will be right up your alley. This is their first album with vocals (much akin to Cedric from TMV), and it all comes together beautifully with Zach Hill's octopus like drumming.

65 Days of Static - The Fall of Math
http://www.greenhell.de/media/images/artikelstammbilder/24609P.jpg

An older full length of theirs (new one soon)--it's all instrumental and is hard to define, elements of post-rock, some glitch, math-rock, but underneath it all it's just good. It might be a hard album to find but believe me it's worth it.

Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
http://www.zicline.com/semaine0520/deltron.jpg

The people mentioning you needing more hip hop, and you saying you don't have a full album---well I assure you my friend no other album could be a better introduction. Every track is flawless, and it's been announced he's doing another similar themed album, as well as his upcoming album 'The 11th Hour'. GET THIS.

Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World
http://shop.relapse.com/dbimages/sleeves/13771_216.jpg

This is among post-rock at it's finest (someone else in this thread mentioned Explosions in the Sky--they're also worth your time), and a guaranteed solid album.

Mastodon - Blood Mountain (any of their albums though really)
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6954/mastodonbloodmountaincover7np.jpg

You'll never look at metal the same after Mastodon. That's really all that needs to be said.

mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/106/mewcover8zf.jpg

Easily one of the best releases of 2006, very heartfelt and poetic lyrics (lots of religious undertones) that's basically golden from start to finish. A HEAVY RECOMMENDATION.

Portugal. The Man - Waiter: "You Vultures!"
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000CQQHRW.01-A2R2RITDJNW1Q6._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Soulful indie rock, extremely hooking melodies--the entire album is very addicting. Get it

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00004VWA8.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37085122_.jpg

Basically, they were one of the most consistent and talented groups of the 70's--but believe me that they're timeless. Prog rock probably never reached a higher peak than with Mahavishnu Orchestra, and this album (among others: 'The Inner Mounting Flame', etc) is an absolute ESSENTIAL. John McLaughlin is easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and denying that is impossible once he's heard. GET THIS/THESE.

Converge - No Heroes
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000I2IRDW.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V40267060_.jpg

A few others name-dropped them, so I'll spare you and just trust me/us.

City of Caterpillar - The City of Caterpillar
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/e0/a1/acf34310fca0ad7ba0d78010._AA240_.L.jpg

They completely flew under the radar to most everyone, which is unfortunate because I don't think anyone's ever done screamo with progressive elements better than or as well as City of Caterpillar did with this CD (on a side note, kind of in the same vein you should check out Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come). It's pretty hard to not like this CD.

Blonde Redhead - Misery Is a Butterfly
http://www.gutsofdarkness.com/pochettes/2739_6330.jpg

Their entire discography is worth checking out, but the vocals are hauntingly beautiful and the music is good to boot.

Burst - Origo
http://www.metalist.co.il/Images/AlbumReviews/Burst-Origo.jpg

This album is a blend of hardcore, metal, and rock progressions that blend seamlessly. One of the better albums that came out last year. Some vocal styles are similar to BearvsShark and the album "Terrorhawk" (also worth checking out--BvS broke up though).

Isis - In The Absence of Truth
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000I2K9JW.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V39823082_.jpg

This album is a good introduction to Isis, even though it's their latest. Isis does post rock as well as anyone, and you really can't go wrong with any of their albums, most fans would say 'Panopticon' was their prime release.

I could literally go on forever, and I'd be willing to if you want. Pretty much every genre of music has an umpteen amount of good music the more you decide to dig. You should definitely check these out though for starters.

Recently acquired:

Comets on Fire-Avatar
Joy Division-Closer

Will be looking into Pelican most likely, since I love Isis even though I've only heard one of their albums.

Joy Division - Closer is a great album, but for a great bundle i'd try to find Joy Division - Still. they are a band that is like a fine wine with subtle undertones. you can buy albums with other versions of their work and find that slight variations in the recording makes the experience almost feel like new. it's definitely a steep slope to get into them, but once you do it is very much worth it.

oh, and they are one of the few bands that i absolutely insist people listen to covers of. most bands just cannot cover beautiful classics, case in point i've yet to hear a Fleetwood Mac cover that wasn't noticeably crappier than the original. but Joy Division was so often recorded under "sub optimal conditions" in live venues that studio renditions by others come out so well. that, and the songs almost beg to have someone's personal stamp placed upon them. there's quite a few covers floating around; one of my surprise faves is Moby's cover of New Dawn Fades. there should be a few cover anthology albums floating around, as well.

Oh, good place to start with Modest Mouse. Next, you should get The Moon & Antarctica. That album is essential. <3

Wow, I'm surpised theres another living soul on this board thats into some decent screamo.
I'd definitely second the likes of Gospel (Who, sadly, decided to break-up recently) and City of Caterpillar (As well as Malady which featured members of City of Cat with a more straight-forward rock approach). I'd also like to toss in a few suggestion screamo/emo related.

- Anything released by Yaphet Kotto
- Funeral Diner - "Underdark"
- Navio Forge - "As We Quietly Burn A Hole..."
- Saetia - "Discography/A Retrospective"
- Envy - "A Dead Sinking Story"
- Circle Takes The Square - "As The Roots Undo"
- I Hate Myself - "Ten Songs"
- Welcome to The Plague Year - "s/t LP"

I'll put in more when I'm not using a Wii Opera browser to type.

Do you like the album? If so I can recommend a lot more that I haven't because I thought you didn't like black/death vocals.

I'm planning on checking out CTTS and getting some more Opeth possibly today.

I'm going to toss some more suggestions into the pot (Seeing as how there are certain forms of music that are a bit lacking in your collection...be it due to your preferences or whatever).

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/38140.jpg

Basically, the precursor/harbringer of hardcore music in general. Not to mention, irrefutable proof that black-americans are responsible for virtually every major shift in western music.

Lightning-fast punk-rock complemented by shrill vocals belted out with the fury to match the onslaught of the instruments themselves. If that doesn't strike your fancy, they even have a few reggae numbers tossed in as well (And, as quirky as that sounds, it does little to detract from the overall experience).

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/110934.jpg

This marked a bit of a departure from Fugazis general, straight-up hardcore (Emo, hardcore, post-hardcore, whatever) tendencies and showed them branching off and experimenting with various forms of music. Not the easiest record to dig into, but the efforts are well worth. Heck, you should just get all the Fugazi records while you're at it. These guys pretty much carried the torch for all things punk-rock (And I mean that in the sense that they not only practiced what they preached, free of the influence of mass-media...but were consistently pushing the limits of music in general) during the late-eights to the 21st century.

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/72908.jpg

I'm sure Walter Schreifels turned more than a few heads with this thick slab of crushing post-hardcore back in the early-nineties (Considering his fame in prior posi-core unit Gorilla Biscuits). I've heard it compared to a mixture of "Strap It On" era Helmet and Fugazi, and while I can see bits and pieces of that in here, I'd hardly call it a "sonic tribute" to either band. Influencing many bands, but never duplicated.

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/37913.jpg

These guys were freaking wizards with their respective instruments, and their odd tunes bring to mind a mixture of Black Sabbath and "Quickness" era Bad Brains (Only infinitely more complicated than either, in my mind). I'm guessing the reason it has been overlooked by most people is due to the fact that it was released on a label primary known for presenting the third-wave of hardcore (Revelation). Its definitely a journey...one that most of the Underdog (The singers band before Into Another)fans weren't able to appreciate.

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/28455.jpg

Arguably the best metalcore band that ever existed, and this re-release happens to cover two of their best records (In my opinion). On the surface, it may appear dated, but thats only because every vegan-edge band from the mid-nineties and up was trying their darndest to recapture the sound on "Life. Love. Regret". In fact, thats probably the only band thing I have to say about these guys in general...the sonic landscape of '96 and up is littered with Unbroken copycats that can't match a fraction of their intensity (Just check the early Victory Records roster if you don't believe me...or don't).

http://interpunk.com/itemimages2/98830.jpg

Its Steve Albini (and friends) playing dissonant, angular rock that'd make your mother cry. Whats not to like?

My hands are tired. So I'll stop for now.

I still don't see Dispatch on your list. For hamd's sake, Hrigg, borrow it from the library or something at the least.
Bang Bang is pure awesome in a convenient compact disc format. No, the album cover is not 1/100th as snazzy as the ones AUTO_ has been posting (those are pretty damn snazzy, I shall admit), but your ears will thank you and possibly even send a cute card with some cash in it on your birthday.

Aphex Twin.

I have Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

Skinny Puppy

Heard some, didn't care for it too much.

Mindless Self Indulgence

Haven't heard any by them.

People say some good stuff about them, though.

I think I read somewhere that Richard James has only actually released about 10% of the music he's actually made. I own quite a few of his albums and I can say that it would probably be in your own best-interest to explore all of his released music. If you can find some of his earlier stuff (when he went by Polygon Window, instead of Aphex Twin) I think you'll really enjoy that as well.

I think most people have probably heard Skinny Puppy before, whether they actually know it or not. I would say that their most accessible album is "The Greater Wrong of the Right". Also check out "The Process" (if you can find it). Most people talk about depth in music but really have no idea of what that truly means until they have heard a cEvin Key production. Skinny Puppy is an acquired taste - I know it was for me. Now that I know their sound (for lack of a better word) I realize it's some of the most complex and well-produced music I have ever heard.

MSI is just...well, MSI. Irreverent, hilarious, disgusting, lude, fucking awesome. Punk is dead. It's a dead scene. MSI may not be punk music, but they borrow many elements from it, metal and rap music to create what I think will become the new sound of music within the next decade - I think that the punk 'movement' has just evolved beyond most people's sensibilities and MSI is one of those bands that is heralding its transition.

i have nothing against MSI, but i just can't find myself listening to them more often than maybe once a month.. if the mood strikes me. they're worth downloading, and worth going to see live, but not buying.

KMFDM on the other hand... is pure yay http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

speaking of which, there is one MSI track i do enjoy... which is their "KMFDM" track (hunt down the burnout revenge mix).

Heh, understandable. MSI is definitely not for everybody. I think it's more of a "scene" music than most other types of music are though - as popular as they may be(?), they're still kind of low-brow (and I mean that on several different levels ha,ha). However irreverent and ridiculous Jimmy Urine appears to be, He is in fact a brilliant programmer, in my opinion.

I think you mean the KMFDM cover of MSI's "Straight To Video"? I really, really like KMFDM - especially their earlier work (Sascha used to be a brilliant programmer (i.e.-"Symbols", "Naive" "Godlike")) but it's my personal opinion that this is the worst cover on that entire album. :| I'm sorry, but I just can't bring myself to like it. Ah well, different strokes, I suppose. I'm much more of an industrial junky though, so it's natural for me to prefer the other covers on the album (Front 242, Combichrist, Front Line Assembly, etc.).

And what are you people doing downloading? >:O

If you're going to download, make it Metallica or some sort of mainstream rap music - support starving performers like MSI so they can eat and continue making music! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I'll get more music once I get the other computer working in the basement.
