There tend to be similarities and a certain distinct anime/manga-esque feel about almost all anime and manga art, but the style of anime and manga is VERY diverse. As for PSO2's style, it is definitely "anime style"... Besides, while PSO's character art was pretty unique, although still "anime styled", the in-game character designs were very anime-styled. It might perhaps be more appropriate to call it modern Japanese style, since it's a style used in most drawn and animated popular Japanese media.

2. FOnewearl is not a loli. She's just small and actually has a rather normal chest size. In no way does she look like a preadolescent...

FOnewearl's more of a magical girl, really. And many of us link that to underaged girls.

PSO FOnewearl was awesome, even in all her shortness, but i never really enjoyed her outfit from the waist down. Im very glad they toned her down a bit while keeping her personality from the original.

She never fit the "magical girl" personality to me. At least, not in official art. Her facial personality was more of a " im fonewm except a girl and really short".

The connection is particularly obvious with Nanoha. What with the mechanical weapons and the shields that could easily be line shields from PSO and such. Sailor Moon is not the only Mahou Shoujo out there, y'know. ^^

So apparently, i recently found out that shows like those are 100% not aimed at females at all. They're aimed at boys.

Although i personally watched Love Hina because it was hilarious.

Well there's your problem. You enjoyed a medium once, and now that you've had your fill, you believe that its quality is lower. Let's face it, you aren't a kid anymore. The magic has been sucked out of everything, and you need to find new ways to find it. It's not that everything sucks, it's that you have a more critical mind now, and you need more substance to fill it. And if nothing else, try something new. There are some great things out there, if you're willing to look or ask around. Heck, try out Friendship is Magic. That's actually really well done, and made with a ton of love.

A magical girl is a young female character (maybe male, but I've never seen one) wearing a highly flamboyant outfit fighting enemies they have no business fighting, and fights using an unorthodox fighting style. I'd also like to remind you that a FOnewearl is a young female character wearing a highly flamboyant outfit fighting enemies they have no business fighting, and fights using an unorthodox fighting style (namely, magic). So, you can forgive me for claiming a FOnewearl is a magical girl, yes?
As for what the appeal is... Originally, it was something for young girls to watch, like super heroes were for young boys. They wore pretty dresses, fought using pretty moves, and valued things young girls value. They became a hit, and as they became more popular, the medium got more mature, until we see those videos that we've watched (which I'll admit I only watched one of. Nice scenery.). If you didn't grow up with it and still want to know, well, that's like trying to explain why men like giant robots and big swords. It's something we grew up with, and it's something we still love.

Neway the difference between Fonewearl and Magical Girl Anime is that Fonewearl isn't the focus of Phantasy Star Online. She is the minority in that she's the only character who defaults to a smaller looking female, and wears "cute" clothing. Also, she's only one in a cast of 12 defaults to gain attention in PSO. I can look over her appearance in this case, because her appearance isn't the focus. Magical Girl anime however, seem to base most of the reason for watching them on the little girls themselves. My over-exaggerations aside, it just does not appeal to me. I don't doubt that one day i....okay, im laying, someone ELSE may force me to watch a magical girl anime, and i may very well like it. This "someone else" is probably going to be my "significant someone else", or else this event probably isn't ever going to happen.



Kind of like how alot of my IRL female friends love Kpop / Jpop groups. I dislike lots of Kpop groups because the focus seems to be on the beautiful women and the handsome women instead of the music itself. This is also the reason PSP2i is one of my least favorite games in the series, despite it having some of the best gameplay. It just stopped appealing to me, when it got so tropey and cliche.

But videogames today (and music as well) just is not the same thing as it was 10-12 years ago. They have changed, dramatically. And i just dont like them as much anymore. With all our advancements, we've been stepping backwards in almost everything except how much memory and horsepower we're using. Precisely why I've significantly toned down my activeness in the PSO2 board. I realized that a vast majority of these people aren't worth the trouble of getting warnings/temporary bans (or perma-bans, even). So, I'm mostly just going to lurk, and throw a few posts up here and there when new tidbits of info pop up.

All the people I usually agree with grew up and stopped posting, no wonder I'm just a "troll" now. D:

Just to be clear though, you don't think a FOnewearl is a magical girl because she doesn't demand a ton of attention? That's an angle I haven't thought of before, it is true that the typical one does have a billboard on their chest. Still, I'm not getting a strong argument against their being a magic girl, just an argument for them being one of the best damn magic girls you've ever seen (by virtue of them being refreshingly modest in their flamboyancy).

Something you'll notice about me, especially as I coup around this forum. I love to argue for the sake of arguing. I dislike emotional outbursts, insults, and overall giving people a bad day. But I love the sport of testing people's opinions to the point of breaking or until new ones are forged in me. I also like testing myself, seeing how much stress I can take before breaking down myself.
So what does that make me? A tea-troll? Or perhaps just really bored?

Yeah thats why i said ill actually pay attention you now because youre worth listening to. Theres a difference between an argument and a flame war. But i dont expect people here to get that.


Edit: oh forgot to elaborate, i meant that even if Fonewearl is a "magical girl" it doesn't bother me because the show she's in (in this case videogame) isn't focused around "magicial girls". It's focused around the fighters and their goal. Now, i dont really care what she is.

It's fine to have a super buff guy, a loli, a magical girl, a sephiroth, and a vash the stampede all in one show. They just cant make up the whole show you know?

Mm... I like to make sure people truly believe in what they say they believe in, and if they don't, I'd like to think I helped them find some greater truth in the matter. And if it turns out they're right, then even better, as it cements their faith, and I get knowledge to boot.

I don't think the way fonewearl fights is exactly weird though, especially not when it's set to be a normal way to fight in said universe.

As for looks... Post PSO mahou shoujo for sure, But PSO's still feels more like a coincidence, possibly because magical girls were still for girls back then. Then she dresses weird... but it's still not the right kind of cute-weird to be exact. If anything she looks kinda freaky... That face paint.

She just feels way more like an RPG character, than a Mahou Shoujo character to me. If anything she reminds me more of that little girl from seiken densetsu 3 minus the baggy clown pants.

Hm... I'm finding it rather hard to disagree with you now. Certain combinations of FOnewearl did give off a creepy, tribal look. Face paint, unorthodox clothing, potent fighting power... Seen in the right light it does disrupt that cutesie look normally associated with, what did you call them, Mahou Shoujos? My view on what makes a magical girl is rather loose, simply equating to some sort of wand, magical abilities, and outlandish clothing, so it's rather hard to get to the core definition and see for sure if FOney fits or not.

Yoshi doesn't argue with people, he's the popcorn eating type.

I loved Fonewearl. It had that unorthodox feeling that the rest of the characters had with a little bit more personality behind it, similar to Fonewm.

It's also worth noting, if you look at the official artwork, the artist never really drew Fonewearl looking very "young". She looked quite mature, if not a bit height challenged.

This is why you never fall for the hype. And as usual the marketing info cycle is so broken as always.
