What is this?
PSO2 Chat Translator is a simple tool that displays your PSO2 chat log in a separate window, and translates the Japanese messages into English (or any other language) for you using Google Translate, in real-time.
Why do I need it?
This tool makes understanding what's being said by Japanese-speaking players much easier for those who know little Japanese (or none at all). It saves time compared to copying text from the in-game chat window and pasting into a Google Translate tab in your browser. It can also show you the transliterated name of Japanese players, for example "ねこや" can be shown as the transliteration "Nekoya", which may be easier to remember if you're not accustomed to Japanese characters. You can also choose to show a transliteration of Japanese messages (romaji) rather than a translation.
How do I use it?
You must have chat logging enabled in game for it to work. Once you've downloaded it (and either installed it or extracted the zip archive), it's as easy as running it and watching the chat messages appear. Note that it will only display messages that appear in the chat after you have opened it, and will not show any messages from before it was opened.
What can this translate?
This tool will only translate messages from players in the standard chat channels (public, party, team and whisper). It cannot translate messages from NPCs, partner characters, nor system messages, as these do not appear in the chat log files. This does not interfere with any modifications you may have made to your game, as this itself is not a modification to the game.
How do I know it's safe?
The tool and its installer have been analysed by several anti-virus and anti-malware programs, and the results of the scans are shown in the Jotti malware scan results in the downloads section below. None of the programs detected malware.
The tool does not require administrator privileges to run, so it only has limited access to your computer.
Prerequisites
You must have the .NET Framework 4.5 installed to be able to run this tool. The installer will make sure you have this and download it if you do not. If you will be using the Zip archive, you can download the .NET Framework 4.5 from Microsoft.
Download
The translator can be downloaded either as an installer capable of putting shortcuts in your Start Menu and on your Desktop, or as a standalone program in a Zip archive to be extracted wherever you please.
Added support for Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. You can choose which game to translate from the "Options" window.
Added support for the DeepL translation API (https://www.deepl.com). An API key is required to use this service, but a free subscription is available.
Version 1.7 (May 1, 2019):
Added support for the GROUP chat type. The colour can be customised from the "Options" window.
Updated Microsoft translation to use version 3 of the Translator Text API.
Added support for the Microsoft transliteration service.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Version 1.6 (August 6, 2016):
Added an option for which transliteration service should be used. The Google (Free) service provides high-quality transliterations but may stop working at any time. The Unidecode service provides low-quality transliterations.
Added automatic detection and correction of damaged configuration files.
Added a translation mode option to allow translations of only Japanese messages, or translation of all messages. When set to "Auto Translate Everything", the translation service will automatically detect the source language - this will allow translations from other languages, such as French, Russian and Spanish, into English. Alternatively, this can be used to translate English (and other languages) into Japanese, for a Japanese user of the tool.
When the "Language" option is set to "Japanese", the user-translation window will now convert from Japanese into English.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Miscellaneous bug fixes.
Version 1.5.2 (January 3, 2016):
Fixed a bug that meant chat messages stopped being displayed when a message with no content was handled (messages filtered by chat channel, or containing only a lobby action that gets removed).
Version 1.5.1 (January 2, 2016):
Fixed a bug that meant transliteration was being performed by Unidecode, when using the Google (Free) service. Unidecode should now only be used when using the Google (API Credentials) and Microsoft (API Credentials) services.
Version 1.5 (January 2, 2016):
Rectified an issue with failing translations.
Added support for the official Microsoft and Google translation APIs, both of which require credentials to use. If you don't wish to use the official APIs, you can continue to use the old free service, by selecting Google (Free) in the Options window. Please be aware that the free service may stop working at any time.
When using the official Microsoft and Google translation services, transliteration will be performed by the Unidecode library, which unfortunately provides less accurate transliterations than those from the Google (Free) service. Neither Microsoft nor Google provide transliteration services through their official translation APIs.
Version 1.4 (October 12, 2015):
Rectified an issue with failing translations.
Improved the translation options by allowing customisation of how player names and chat messages are displayed, through the use of macros.
Added hotkeys to scroll the chat log up or down by one page. They can be set up at the bottom of the "General" tab in the "Options" window.
Added options to filter which chat channels are displayed.
Added an option to hide unrecognised and invalid chat commands.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Version 1.3.1 (April 9, 2015):
Hotfix to rectify an issue with failing translations, caused by Google Translate requiring a CAPTCHA.
Version 1.3 (August 9, 2013):
Colour chat macros such as {red} are now hidden from the chat window.
Improved the ability to remove the letter 'w' from Japanese messages before translating - it will now remove the uppercase letter W, as well as the full-width characters 'w' and 'W'.
The overlay chat border's opacity can now be changed separately to that of the chat background, using a slider. To disable the border in overlay mode, simply drag the slider to the far left (transparent) side.
It’s now possible to keep Japanese chat messages in Japanese. This may be of use to people who wish to use more advanced translation programs, but find they are unable to use their translation program with PSO2/GameGuard.
Added a new textbox to the user-translation window, showing the transliteration (romaji) of the Japanese translation.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Miscellaneous bug fixes.
Version 1.2 (May 3, 2013):
URLs in chat are now converted into clickable hyperlinks.
Added ability to change the translation language to something other than English.
Added a user-translation window to let the user translate a message from their own language, into Japanese, and then see a translation of the Japanese back into their own language to verify it.
Added an option to show/hide chat commands, such as “/la dance5”.
Added an option to remove the letter “w” from Japanese messages, prior to translation. This can improve the accuracy of the translation.
Added an option to put chat messages on the next line, beneath the name.
It’s now possible to show chat messages as both the translation and the transliteration (romaji/romanisation).
Changed the overlay chat border to a more PSO2-like version, created by Gama at PSO-World.com. Thanks!
Miscellaneous bug fixes.
Version 1.1 (March 5, 2013):
Added overlay mode with transparency support.
Added support for message transliteration (romanisation/romaji).
Added always-on-top option.
Added font family, size and style options.
Added update checker.
Public chat colour is now used for all chat channels when “Display messages in colour” is unchecked.
Version 1.0 (February 25, 2013):
First release of the program.
I hope this will be of use to many of you, and please do let me know if you encounter any problems or have any feature suggestions!
Thanks,
Tanerinn.

Thanks. This was written in C# using the .NET Framework 4.5. I'm not too sure what you mean by realtime read/translating, as I believe this is already what it does! :D

It only makes a very small HTTP request and receives a small HTTP response per message, much less than the full HTML of the Google Translate webpage. Is there some problem with connecting to Google? :-)

Mybad, I misread the part about getting chat after you opened it. xD
What about translated output?
like I say something in English, then type -t or some other flag/command and it puts the Japanese text of what I had just chatted in the clipboard or automatically sends that text. (quick enter / paste / enter)
Also, do you think you can play the audio files from the google tts api to allow players to hear what is being said without having to minimize the game? Also, toggle it on/off with a chat command?
Sorry if I'm just dumping all these ideas out there. I've been wanting something like this for a wile, but I'm way too lazy to make it.

I'll certainly be thinking about how to offer translations from English to Japanese, and the use of a flag in the in-game chat window sounds interesting! I'll add both this and the text-to-speech feature to my to-do list. :-)

It'll be helpful to many, and I'll surely use this to get a slight understanding of some things that Japanese players say when playing with them(especially for some words I don't know ;_;).

One for PSU also had translations for things like picked up items too. (Though for this it was not using google, but some psu item database)

My market database tools already does this for me, but it's not perfect.
The biggest issue is there is no record when you turn items in for CO's.

Okay, this is very nice, but the font is really tiny. I play at a significant distance from my screens (about three metres), I cannot see the font at all.

It should also be possible to add support for the other logs too, which is something I'll consider adding in the future!

Yes you're correct in that it translates the log in real time. As above, I'll consider adding support for the other log files including showing the items that were picked up, although I might have to rely on Google Translate for the translations unless there's a PSO2 database somewhere.

Just a thought. :)
Always on top will be added in the next version, although transparency is slightly harder so it might take a bit longer.

Although a lot of translated messages are still difficult to comprehend, overall it works very well to get the basic meaning across. The custom translations section of the options dialog allows you to define your own translations, which you could use to set up better translations of slang terms (although at present it will only work on exact matches). :-)

Unfortunately it can't translate the event notifications nor other messages outside of the four main chat channels (public, party, team and whisper), as the other messages don't get written to the chat log. Messages from NPCs in the main chat channels aren't written to the chat log either. :-(

Would it be possible to get it to show the text as Romaji?
I see that on google translate, I can put "お疲れ様でしたー!" and click on the "Show Phonetically" button, and below the box it'll display "Otsukaresamadeshita ̄ !"
I don't really need this feature myself, but I have friends who only know random Japanese from anime and such, so they can't actually read any kana at all. (Well, I lied. One of them has seen よろしく so many times they actually can read that...)
But since they'll know what "Otsukare" means, if they can just read that, they can figure out what it means themselves.
I figure that for those who can understand at least some of the basic communication could use this, as "-were cheers for good work!" sounds pretty awkward.
And putting a rule for all different forms of a word can be tedious (and sometimes you just don't know what kind of slang the players would put)
Of course, I suggest this as a toggle. And probably not the default setting
(Like how you can have the names normal, or transliterated)
(Make the text Google Translate, or Phonetical Readings)
Another suggestion would be;
Is it possible to make a field on there where you can type something in english, and have google translate return to you their Japanese translation?
Pretty much, for instead of keeping a google translate webpage open, and alt tabbing to that to attempt a half-baked Japanese Chat;
I was wondering if your program could just support something like that.
(To expand on this, perhaps make it automatically add the Japanese translation to your clipboard, so you don't even have to Ctrl+C? Lol.)
I don't know much about coding however, so if this is incredibly hard/time consuming (or impossible?), then simply ignore this request.
----
Otherwise, I came to say good job with this, I can definitely see this as being handy.
I'd like to second the suggestions of:
Always on top + Transparency
More Font Choices
Reading the ActionLog as well. (I think this should be either in another tab, or a sister-program. Something so it doesn't flood the chat window with "Found 34 meseta"

Fun fact- Tane actually planned this feature in the very early versions too- that it's not in (yet) is completely my fault. Sorry! I figured that most of the replies you'd need are things people have set up as autowords, yes/no/okay/thank you and such. Obviously I was wrong and I'm sure this along with all the other requested features will be added soon. ^^ (actually transparent overlay mode is done and being tested now wooo!)

Thought I would let you guys know that I've created something similar to this as well.
It will automatically stay ontop when it's in "Real-time view".
Slider under the chat box changes opacity/transparancy.
Planning on adding a separate "black-list" to it as well.
I'm not allowed to post link to it here though, due to the other shady stuff going on over there ^^

You are obviously free to do whatever you want, there's already roughly 1370 pso players using "my stuff" and not all of those people are people who cheat.
As I said in my post earlier, I just thought I'd let you guys know that there's another version of a tool like this since I know a lot of you do not visit the website where I release my things.
Btw, just out of curiosity, is it the fact that I released the trainer or is it because I, myself, have been playing around with the game that makes you be like that?
If it's the latter, then I'm guessing you're not using the English patch either, right?
Mar 4, 2013, 01:18 AM

I don't mind all that translating and using a deICEr on the game files to poke around and find things since they aren't really concerned about that, in most cases that only impacts the client and not their server / peers. It's the trainer-like stuff that bothers me and leaves me cautious about it all.
I'm assuming you're bypassing GG to run the trainer, which I'm not cool with.
I know it wouldn't make any sense to bypass GG for a translator app, but it's a psychological trust issue along the lines of this guy is already beyond limits I'm comfortable with, so I don't know what he puts in his code.
It's interesting to see that you guys are against botting though.

Both modify the client via a third party, which is generally (i say generally since I can't read the ToS...lol) against a ToS.

The English patch does modify the client. I think you're mistaking client/server-side information, here. The files you paste into the win32 folder modify the client.
Furthermore, Sakai has never said he was okay with people using the patch. In fact, SEGA has altered the ToS to make it clearer that any third-party alteration not only was against said terms, but also altogether illegal.
Using the English patch is not akin to cheating morally, but legally, it's just as bad.

As the Hrith points out, it does modify the client.
SEGA encrypted their files, which is a security measure meant to block things like this since it modifies things in the client that aren't supposed to be modified.
Sakai is aware of it, and obviously do not like it since they have even tried to change the encryption a couple of times.

Version 1.1 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!
Please check the first post to get the latest download links, and check out the new screenshots to see the additional features in action. The changelog is below.
To adjust the level of transparency in overlay mode, use the background slider on the "General" tab of the options dialog. This will only change the transparency of the background of the tool, not the text that it shows. To change the transparency of the text, go to the "Display" tab of the options dialog and set the colours for each chat channel - if you click Advanced on the colour picker that opens up, you can control the transparency using the slider labelled "A" (alpha channel).
Please note that overlay mode can only produce an overlay on top of the game when it's running in a window, which rules out an overlay for fullscreen mode. However, you have the option of running PSO2 in virtual fullscreen mode, which produces the same results as fullscreen but is actually a full-size borderless window - meaning overlay mode will work with it! To enable virtual fullscreen mode, follow these steps:
Open your Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2 folder.
Open the user.pso2 file in a text editor such as Notepad.
Find the Windows section that looks something like this:
"Windows = {
FullScreen = false,
Height3d = 480,
Height = 720,
VirtualFullScreen = true,
Width3d = 640,
Width = 1280,
},"
Make sure FullScreen is false and VirtualFullScreen is true. You can leave the rest alone.
Save and close the file and open up the game!
I hope to get text-to-speech and English to Japanese translation into the next release, as well as the possibility to use a different language than English for translations. As this version includes an update checker, assuming you enable it in the options dialog you will be notified when the next version is released.

You can now have the translator on top of the game, either using the "Display the window always on top of other windows" option or by using the new overlay mode.

Is it possible to make a field on there where you can type something in english, and have google translate return to you their Japanese translation?
...
Otherwise, I came to say good job with this, I can definitely see this as being handy.
Thanks! Romaji can now be shown rather than the English translation using the "Translation" tab in the options dialog. As mentioned earlier I plan on adding English to Japanese translation in the next version.

Just wanted to say, love the romaji and overlay update.
Would it be possible to display both the translations and romaji? At the moment I am forced to open two instances of the chat translator, manually change the translation settings every time I open it, and overlay only seems to work for one window.
Please keep up the good work!

This has been around since February? Wow. I've been behind lol.
@OP, would this by chance be open source app? ^.^
I would love to take a look at the code for educational purposes, perhaps even help out? Would def be something nice to add to a resume!

PSO2 Chat Translator isn't currently open source, but I may reconsider - if I do I'll be sure to update the thread with a link to the source. ;-)

I'm sorry to hear you've been having problems with it. I'm aware of a few bugs relating to the settings which have been fixed in the development version, and I hope to have it released soon!

Version 1.2 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!
Please check the first post to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.
The user-translation window can be toggled either using the button on the main window, or through a configurable hotkey that you can set up in the options dialog. After typing a message in the user-translation window, the Japanese translation is automatically displayed, and then a translation back into your chosen language is shown underneath for verification. The Japanese translation is placed into your clipboard automatically, so you can paste it into the game without hassle. To close the user-translation window, you can either press the configured hotkey or just use the Escape key.
Your suggestions and feedback are welcome! :-D
Cheers,
Tanerinn.

Yea, no real worries over all, when I stopped playing with settings and just left it with default settings, it worked perfect(you know, outside of google translate being hilarious at times)
Over all a really awesome program and idea.

Yo! I had an idea for the "translation" option. If possible after you type in the word you wish to translate would it be possible to add romanji under the japanese text and above the translation checker?

^That would be a nice addition, since I know some of the romanji too.

Version 1.3 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!
Please check the first post to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.
Your suggestions and feedback are welcome! :-D
Cheers,
Tanerinn.

I haven't looked into this much but there is the possibility that it could be done. If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 with the Aero theme, you may find you get better performance if you disable desktop composition (the Aero theme) while running PSO2.

While you can use the chat translator in regular fullscreen mode, you'll either need a second monitor to look at it on, or you'll have to Alt-Tab out of the game. The chat translator's overlay mode can only overlay on top of a virtual fullscreen window or regular windowed mode, for now at least. :-)

I've just discovered this and I'm blown away at how great this is.
A minor suggestion of mine: Could you allow an option to swap the order of appearance for translated text/romaji? For me, it just feels more natural having the japanese text come first and then the translation.

I've been investigating a way to provide the overlay for normal fullscreen mode, and I may be able to add this in the future.

Thank you so much for your continued updates! This program is so helpful!
I have a question: is it possible to turn off team or other chat modes? I recently joined a team and my goodness they are such chatboxes, lol. I turned the team chat off in the option settings in the game, but the Chat Translator continues to pick up those messages. Is it possible to turn those messages off somehow?
If not, that's okay, I was just wondering. Maybe it could be a useful idea for when you update.
Thanks again!

without wanting to sound like an ass, but i would advise you on updating to w7 or 8 if you can, microsoft droped xp support and youll get more and more issues with app compatibility over time.
i know its horrible having to update to a new os when youre probbly used to xp, but if you can run pso2 on your xp machine, maybe a software update would be good for the overal windows experience.

it keeps saying untranslated now it was working before and sometimes works but after last game update it fails most of the time
If you downloaded it thinking it was not google translated then you were misinformed :P but, you can add custom translations, for example, you can tell the program to translate マグ to MAG instead of Mug.
AIDA Tanerin, is it possible to hide autowords, just like in the in-game chat? (and it would be awesome to go further and disable NPC/bots autowords from the chat too, unlike the in-game chat)
Also, dissabling the chat commands I still see my lobby actions.

._.
I know this isn't how I'm supposed to use this but. . .
I've this chat translator pretty useful while surfing the net, and not missing any B-20's "usual activities" I can look to the chat without having to switch back to PSO2.
This crash is caused by the RadeonPro graphics card tool. Please follow the instructions on their troubleshooting page to add PSO2 Chat Translator.exe to the compatibility list, and disable API detection for it:
Quote:
Q- Some programs are crashing or misbehaving when RadeonPro is active and Global API Monitoring is in effect. A- Add the executable name to RadeonPro Compatibility list and set option Disable API detection for the item, that should fix the issue you’re finding with a particular program/application.

I've tried it both the installer and the stand-alone version but it doesn't work for me.
I'm playing PSO2 in virtual full screen and open the translator in overlay on top like the others say in this forum.
But it doesn't translate any sentences that come by in the chat log, I dont know why.
As you see, the translator is overlay above the chat log and there are some japanese talking in chat log. But the translator doesn't translate anything.
Please help :(

If you're unable to open PSO2 Chat Translator and the problem signature mentions System.Xml, it's very likely that your configuration file has been damaged.
To fix this issue, please navigate to the following folder in Windows Explorer (you can paste it straight into the address bar):
Delete any folder you see inside of it, particularly the folder named 1.3.0.0. You will lose your settings and have to reconfigure PSO2 Chat Translator how you would like it, but it should start up again. :-)

You're just using Google so it should be easy to only add basic selection of input and output language?

You are not suggesting to translate something more than once or?
Cause that would produce exactly the result everyone used to laugh their asses off about with babelfish back in the day.
