Can I farm synthesizers or do I have to rely on them being dropped and/or handed out by friendly NPCs?

I'd suggest going through the ARKs Road quests. It did help a bit with getting me up to speed when the Support Partners came out.

And if I may ask, how many items can a gift box contain? I know it has a maximum of 100k meseta, but I can't seem to find any limit to how many items it could contain.
