I'm 99% sure that you can just update it through the tweaker after having downloaded the bulk of it via torrent.

The box to enable item patching is in the same menu when you click the orb. It is down near the two 'options' buttons.

If you remove the opening videos, then you need to click to move past the black screens. It isn't automatic.

Put everything in vanilla Japanese-only and then run the game. If you're still getting errors then it has nothing to do with any English patches. It would be a problem on your end.
