You can make that argument about nearly all the left-hand rings.

Is it a crappy way to implement it? Yes.
Is it useful and better than not having it at all? Yes.

I definitely endorse the Forward S-Roll Ring, having gotten mine today. It makes staying in the air and staying engaged with your target a whole lot less of a PITA than before.

After 6 months of no practice, I suspect your S-Roll timing is pretty rusty. It'll come back.
