Oh, you're not the only one that thinks these things. My mother-in-law's a high school teacher and according to her, the only thing worse than her students are their parents, who expect the school/society/somebody/anybody to raise their little hellions for them.
The truth is, she's not the only one who sees that. At my workplace, I hear tales upon tales about "adults" who are too busy climbing the corporate ladder/rechasing their youth/being a wage slave/insert excuse here to really focus on their children.
I have an eighteen-year-old brother who's going to college this fall. My parents never worried about what "filthy, violent" games he played, because they either monitored them, or in many cases, actually played with him (not coincidentally, my mother really kicks ass with Charlie at Street Fighter Alpha 3). When I was growing up, they didn't have to worry about what I was exposed to, because they monitored and watched it as well. THAT's responsibility.
And no, you can't watch your children 24/7. But if you take the time to at least do the job 16/7, those remaining 8 hours a day are going to be harmless bumps and bruises we call growing up in a normal household.
